Teacher in campaign
sign incident submits
resignation
A Germantown School District teacher involved in a
campaign sign vandalism incident last summer has
resigned.
The teacher, April Kay Smith, received a disorderly
conduct citation from the Jefferson County Sheriff's
Department July 9 after it was determined that she
destroyed campaign signs for Gov. Scott Walker. She
later entered a no contest plea and paid $169 in court
assessments, according to the Wisconsin Circuit Court
Access Web site.
According to the Sheriff's Department report, a witness observed Smith destroying the signs at the Jefferson
County Fair and contacted the Sheriff's Department. The
witness wrote a report in which she stated she observed
Smith pull the signs out of the ground and step all over
them.
At first, Smith denied damaging the signs and said
she was Germantown kindergarten teacher. She was a
teacher at Amy Belle Elementary School prior to the incident.
In December, the Germantown School District issued
a statement stating that the School Board determined the
incident was an isolated event and that district parents
have praised her work as an educator. The district stated
the Smith would be allowed to resume her duties in an
alternate teaching assignment.
Smith submitted a letter to the district dated Feb. 12
stating that she would resign effective the next day. The

Boys basketball: Germantown wins share of North Shore title

North Shore Conference title with a 80-54

win over the Knights.
The number one goal always is the
North Shore Conference six in a row
and eight out of nine. Pretty special for all
these boys, Germantown Coach Steve
Showalter said afterward.
Showalter added that this years team
watched previous title winners in the past.
No one expected a whole lot and its
kind of fun that here we are again, he
said.
Right after the game, Showalter spoke
to fans prior to cutting down the nets to
mark a conference title.
This is six in a row, its pretty special
for all of us. These boys worked pretty hard
and make sure that you appreciate these
guys. This is a lot of effort, a lot of teamwork, Showalter said.
He thanked his assistants and parents
for their support.
We have a lot of special kids here.
Appreciate them, thank you for everything
and lets cut the nets down, Showalter
said.
Germantown opened the game with a
23-2 run before Nicolet outscored the
Warhawks 8-3 in the final minute of the first
quarter to make the lead 26-10.
Germantown picked up the pace in the
second quarter and held a 47-24 lead by
halftime. Nicolet slowed the pace and
outscored Germantown 20-10 in the third
quarter. The Germantown lead was cut to
62-40 following a basket by Nicolet at the
5:57 mark of the fourth quarter.
But a three-point basket by Juwan
McCloud was the first of 20 consecutive
points over a three minute period to seal
the win for Germantown.
Germantown followed that win with a
75-53 win over Brookfield Central Feb. 17.
McCloud led the Warhawks with 23

points.
We shouldnt need any motivation for
Brookfield Central. We shouldnt need any
motivation for Homestead, Showalter said
after the Nicolet win. Homestead will play
at Germantown Feb. 20. With a win in that
game, Germantown will clinch sole possession of the North Shore title.
Germantown avenged last years loss
to the Lancers, which snapped
Germantowns 69-game winning streak.
After the win, Germantown now has a 190 record. The Warhawks started the week
ranked first in state Division I coaches poll.
Other results
Menomonee Falls had a 4-8 Greater
Metro Conference record and a 8-12 overall mark following a 63-52 loss at West
Allis Hale Feb. 13. Bryce McMurtry led

Menomonee Falls with 21 points.

Hamilton beat Brookfield East Feb. 13,
49-42. Zach Jasinski led Hamilton with 14
points. Afterward, Hamilton had a 3-8
record in the Greater Metro Conference
and a 9-10 overall mark.
Kettle Moraine Lutheran remained at
the top of the Flyway Conference standings following a 58-45 win at Omro Feb.
13. Jared Henning led the Chargers with
16 points. The Chargers followed the
Flyway Conference win with a 68-38 win
at Kewaskum. Steve Seider led Kettle
Moraine Lutheran with 13 points.
Afterward, the Chargers had a 12-0
Flyway Conference record and a 19-1
overall mark. Kettle Moraine Lutheran also
remained at the top of the Division 3
coaches poll that came out at the beginning of the week.

Girls basketball: Germantown tops

Homestead for conference title
Germantown's Val Meissner converted
six free throws in the final minute against
Homestead as the Warhawks defeated the
Highlanders 59-47 Feb. 19. Germantown,
which won a share of the North Shore title
with last week's win over Nicolet, clinched
sole possession of the North Shore crown
with the win over Homestead.
"Every time this group has been challenged this year they've dug in defensively
and made the plays the needed to offensively. They always seemed to respond just
how you want them to respond,"
Germantown Coach Matt Stuve said afterward.
With the win, Germantown finished the
regular season with a 18-3 overall record.
Germantown will open postseason play

against Hamilton Feb. 27.

"Toughest one in the state," Stuve said
of Germantowns postseason sectional. He
noted the sectional includes Hamilton,
Arrowhead, DePere, Sheboygan North and
Kimberly
"You've got to win a state tournament
just to get to the state tournament," Stuve
said.
Hamilton finished the regular season
with a 42-39 win over Menomonee Falls
Feb. 19. Hamilton, a sixth seed in the
regional, finished the regular season with
a 15-7 overall record. Menomonee Falls
finished the regular season with a 6-16
overall record. Menomonee Falls will
open the postseason at Waukesha South
Feb. 24.

As youve no doubt noticed, your trips to the gas station have been a lot more
pleasant these past several months. Theres not much doubt that low oil prices
have been welcome to you as a driver. But when oil is cheap, is that good for you
as an investor?
Theres no clear-cut answer. But consider the following effects of low oil prices:
Positive impact on economy When you spend less at the gas pump, relative
to recent years, what will you do with your savings? Like most people, youll
probably spend most of it on goods and services. If you multiply the amount of
your increased spending by the millions of other Americans who are also saving
money on gas, you can see that you and your fellow consumers are likely adding
billions of dollars to the economy. Typically, a strong economy is also good for the
financial markets and for the people who invest in them.
Different results for different sectors Different sectors within the financial
markets may respond in different ways to low oil prices, even if the overall effect
is generally positive. For example, businesses such as consumer goods companies
and auto manufacturers may respond favorably to cheaper oil and gas. But the
picture might be quite a bit different for energy companies.
You could spend a lot of time and effort trying to adjust your investment portfolio in response to low oil prices. In fact, you may well want to consult with your
financial professional to determine which moves might make sense for your individual situation. Yet theres actually a bigger lesson to be learned here: Dont
overreact to temporary developments. The recent decline in oil prices has certainly had an economic impact, but no one can predict how long these prices will
stay low or what other factors may arise that would affect the financial markets.
Thats why you cant reconfigure your portfolio based on particular events, whatever they may be oil price drops, interest-rate fluctuations, political squabbles
at home, natural disasters in faraway lands, and so on.
If you can keep from being overly influenced by specific events, you may be able
to gain at least two key benefits: First, by not making trades constantly in reaction to the headlines of the day, you can avoid piling up heavy fees and commissions costs that can reduce the return rate on your investments. Second, youll
find that if you arent always thinking about whats going on in the world today,
you can focus your investment efforts more intensely on where you want to be
tomorrow. The most successful investors set long-term goals and dont focus on
factors they cannot control, such as oil prices, interest-rate changes or other economic events. Instead, these investors make adjustments, as necessary, to accommodate changes in their goals as well as other changes, such as revisions in tax
laws but they basically stick to their same approach for the long term.
So be aware of low oil prices, but dont get so "pumped" about them that you
sludge up your consistent investment strategy because that strategy has the
energy to keep you moving toward your important objectives.

Village Board lowers speed limit on Donges Bay Road

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Germantown Village Board
approved lowering the speed limit on
Donges Bay Road to 35 mph Feb. 16.
The motion went against the recommendation of village staff, which proposed
having the Police Department monitor

speeds along the road for several months

before determining the speed limit.
I think the prudent position here is that
the Village Board postpone this item for a
couple of months, Village Engineer
Brionne Bischke said.
Bischke said that during that time the
Police Department should monitor speeds
along the road. He cited the document

POLICE BLOTTER
The following report was taken
from records at the Germantown
Police Department.

for retail theft, felony bail jumping and
obstructing at 3:02 p.m. Feb. 5 at Fleet Farm,
N96 W18200 County Line Road. He was
also found to have a warrant through the
West Allis Police Department.
A female subject was cited for retail
theft at 5:34 p.m. Feb. 6 at Fleet Farm.

Theft
Computer parts were reported stolen
from Germantown High School, W180
N11501 River Lane, Feb. 5.
Several tools were reported stolen
from a garage in the W21000 block of
Marlette Drive Feb. 7.

School was cited for habitual truancy and
her mother was cited for contributing to truancy Feb. 6.

that road 24 hours a day, Vanderheiden
said.
Vanderheiden said he would support
the 35 mph limit for Donges Bay Road.
Trustee Terri Kaminski noted Division
Road also has a 35 mph limit and that lowering the speed limit on Donges Bay is in
line with the village is doing for other
roads.
Trustee Art Zabel said there were only
two-foot shoulders along portions of
Donges Bay Road while there are driveways at the top of the hill on the road,
which are reasons to lower the speed limit.
Trustee Robert Warren asked the board
to give Bischke a chance to do his analysis and get some good quantitative information to possibly support these subjective
reasons that we are coming up with.
Police Capt. Michael Snow echoed
comments from Chief Peter Hoell at the
committee level, who indicated the department doesnt have the information to recommend a change.
We just dont respond to a lot of accidents in that area, Snow said.
However, the agency would support
enforcement if the board lowers the speed
limit.
The board rejected a motion by
Warren to delay action to allow for a
review of speed along the road, with
Warren and Trustee Shane Daniels supporting the request. The board then
approved lowing the speed limit, with
Daniels and Warren voting in dissent.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve
the Germantown community and work with

The Methods and Practices for Setting

Speed Limits, which was prepared by the
Federal Highway Administration and
which gave guidelines for determining
speed limits.
Its basically engineering 101,
Bischke said. He explained that drivers will
drive at a comfortable level, no matter
what the speed limit may be. The document
states that the speed limit should be set at
the 85th percentile or the speed that 85
percent of drivers will travel.
The Police Department did monitor
speeds along Windsong Road in May to
early June 2014, the speed traveled by 85
percent drivers was 45 mph. However, that
study was done only over a few days.
Bischke said the problem with lowering
the speed limit below the 85th percentile is
that a section of drivers is now breaking the
law.
And theyre going be breaking the
law, because no matter what you post that
speed limit at, theyre going to drive how
comfortable they are, and the Police
Department is going to be overwhelmed
with enforcement, Bischke said.
Bischke said the Police Department
should do the study before a decision is
made.
Trustee Al Vanderheiden noted the
speed limit on Mequon and Pilgrim roads
are both 35 mph, and that both roads are
four lanes. By contrast, Donges Bay Road
is only two lanes.
It comes down to enforcement. If you
want ensure people are going 35 mph,

Unfortunately, there are lots of restrictions when it comes to shipping packages. Does it contain lithium batteries, alcohol, tobacco, firearms, ammunition,
or dry ice? Fortunately, we are ready to help here at The UPS Store! Were the
experts at helping you navigate all those restrictions. Most lithium batteries
like those in our smartphones, tablets and laptops can be shipped easily, as
long as the package is labeled correctly. Alcohol and tobacco shipping is very
restricted, so its best to give those thoughtful gifts in person. Firearms, parts,
scopes and ammunition cannot be shipped through The UPS Stores. However,
we can offer you our expert packaging services so all you have to do is handle the shipping! Shipping with dry ice is a great way to keep items cold, but
are limits on how much dry ice can be shipped and packaging can be tricky. If
you ever have questions regarding packaging or shipping, just give us a call!

I'm Blackie - they told me I was transferred from

a place called Sauk County ... don't know where
that is. The people that originally had me
surrendered me to Sauk County Humane Society
because they just didn't have time for me. I sure
am a sweet girl! Staff keeps saying that they are
looking for an experienced dog owner to love me forever ... not quite sure
what that means - but I hope to have a new home soon! I am a very smart
girl - but have a tendency to protect what's mine when it comes to food that is why staff says I should only go to a home with children 15 years or
older. I know sit, shake, kisses and boy can I beg. I am a little picky about

who does! I do like a good game of fetch. Stop by and ask for me "Blackie."
Tip of the Week: Pets need regular vaccinations against common ills, such as rabies, distemper, feline leukemia,
and canine hepatitis. How often your dog or cat needs to be immunized depends on their age, lifestyle, health,
and risks, so talk to your vet about the vaccinations that make sense.

The MCR Group LLC

Three Companies with proven experience
and customer satisfaction, joined together to
better service the needs of the landscape
industry. The MCR Group provides a wide
variety of services for its clients. From lawn
service and bed maintenance to custom construction of patios, outdoor kitchens, pergolas and outdoor living rooms. The MCR
Group is also a full service snow and ice
control company offering the highest standards of winter safety for its commercial and
industrial customers. Located at 7301 W.
Calumet Rd in Milwaukee, customers are
able to visit their detailed indoor showroom
which transitions into a beautiful outdoor
space. These spaces combined with their
state of the art 3-D design capabilities really
allow the customer to have a hands on, visual approach to their landscaping projects.
With combined experience of over 80
years, they are capable of maintaining the

individualized home, to the expansive

acreage of larger commercial and industrial
sites.
"The coalition of the individual businesss
really made for a powerhouse company that
todays industry was in dire need of," says
James Hoffmann, Vice President of
Operations at The MCR Group.
Paul Conway offers a special "eye" in natural landscape designs. His abilities to combine native outcropping stones and boulders
with plantings really brings the designs to
life. Seamlessly blending the hardscaping
with the natural beauty of Wisconsins native
species.
Northouse Landscape brought the 3-D
design and architectural aspect to the table.
Ryan Risse, the lead designer states, "The
ability to take tours of the project before
installation allowed us to exceed not only
our clients expectations, but also our

installers. The 3-D "movies" created from our

2-D renderings gave a clear picture as to
what the end product should be. That gave
our installers the ability to really fine tune the
details and specialties needed to offer the
customer a landscape installation catered to
their individual personalities and needs."
MCR Property Maintenance brought 18
years of experience in horticultural bed
maintenance and turf management which
allows The MCR Group to properly manage
the clients needs even after the initial installations, assuring the new found beauty is
there to stay. That maintenance knowledge
combined with the business knowledge that
owner Matt Ryan possessed, allowed the
acquisitions to flourish.
T he MCR Group has grown to a 70 truck
fleet plus over 50 pieces of equipment to
fully service the areas snow removal needs.
The MCR Group prides itself on the service

they are capable of providing to a wide

range of high-end customers, such as
Bayshore Town Center. A zero tolerance attitude is maintained the entire winter season,
allowing the malls clients to enjoy the
lifestyle and shopping experience in the
safest ways possible. Such a property also
requires the snow to be hauled off site after
every event. The MCR group has a trucking
division that consists of quad axle and tri
axle dump trucks. Providing hauling services
of salt, soils, snow, aggregates, debris etc.
for their home owning clients projects as well
as highway projects such as the zoo interchange.
The MCR Group, distinguished pasts with
a unified future is clearly the best option for
all of your contracting needs. Business hours

Friday. Stop in or call (414) 447-0810 to

Plan for a Bountiful Harvest this Season

BY MELINDA MYERS
Its hard to believe, but soon plants will
be moving into the garden center and dreams
of a beautiful and productive garden will be
filling your head. Many gardeners however
find that when it comes to putting plans down
on paper, they freeze. Perhaps just a little
help is needed.
To begin, take a look at your favorite
recipes and make a list of the ingredients you
would like to grow. Include vegetables and
herbs you use often, those that are cheaper to
grow than to buy, and those that taste best
fresh from the garden. Tomatoes, peppers,
cilantro are just a few that come to mind.
Be sure to involve your family in this
process. After all, if they help plan the garden, they may be more inclined to help weed,
water and harvest it. But even if they dont
end up lending a hand, they will be much
more likely to clean their plates when you
make their favorite dishes with those homegrown fresh-from-the-garden vegetables.
Once you have your list of vegetables
and herbs, its time to design your garden.
Dont let this step intimidate you. There are
some
terrific
online
tools,
like
bonnieplants.com, that provide planting

plans to make this much easier for both new

and experienced gardeners. For example, in
just one small space (4 feet by 4 feet), Bonnie
Plants Homemade Salsa garden plan allows
gardeners to grow two tomato or tomatillo
plants in cages in one row, one jalapeno pepper and one red bell pepper in cages in the
next row, and cilantro and onions in the third
row. If you need more produce for your
favorite recipes, just add another 4 x 4 section.
Or visit gardeners.com to plan your own
garden. Their kitchen and garden planner
(located under learn and share) allows you to
design your own garden. And once planned
you will have your own planting guide and
know how many plants or seeds are needed
to grow the garden you desire.
Boost your gardens productivity even further with proper care and some space-saving
techniques:
Water plants thoroughly whenever the
top few inches of soil is crumbly and just starting to dry. Also, be sure to mulch by covering
the soil surface with a layer of shredded
leaves, evergreen needles, or weed-free
straw. Mulching helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve the soil over time.
Maximize every square foot by grow-

ing tomatoes and peppers in cages. In addition, train cucumbers and other vining plants
up a trellis. Going vertical leaves more room
to plant your other favorite herbs and vegetables.
Save even more space by growing fastmaturing vegetables like lettuce in between
vegetables like tomatoes that take much
longer to begin producing. This strategy,
known as interplanting, allows you to grow
two types of vegetables in one space. By the
time the tomato plants become large and
start to shade out the greens, the lettuce will
be done producing. Not only does this save
space, but it also reduces the number of
weeds.
Now its time to start mapping out your
plans for the growing season ahead.
And be sure to bring you gardening ques-

tions and stop by and visit me Sunday, March

1 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the 2015
Home, Garden and Landscape Show at the
Waukesha Expo Center for Ask the Expert.
