35th Midwinter Bald Eagle Survey

Shows 34% Increase!_________________
since 1981.

NH Audubon recently completed its annual Midwinter Bald

Eagle Survey with a new state
record high of 90 bald eagles
counted in one day. This is a 34
percent increase over last year,
when observers counted 67
birds. Overall, a record 102 volunteer observers participated in
the event, which was coordinated in partnership with the New
Hampshire Fish and Game
Departments Nongame and
Endangered Wildlife Program
and the U.S. Geological Survey.
This trend is promising for conservationists who have been
tracking eagle populations

Weather conditions for the

count, which was held on
January 10 statewide and
January 8 in the Lakes Region,
were extremely positive, with
two weeks of very cold weather
, which likely caused bald
eagles to flock to the southern
areas of the state, where more
volunteer observers were located. The top regional honors for
most eagles seen on Count Day
2015 goes to the Merrimack
River watershed, where 29
eagles were tallied. The Great
Bay coastal region followed
closely behind with 26 birds
counted, and the Lakes Region
was third with 15 eagles count

The 2015 count results are

truly remarkable, said Chris
Martin, senior biologist at NH
Audubon. Thanks to the
efforts of more than 100 volunteers this year and hundreds
more over the past 35 years,
were seeing results from our
efforts to protect this threatened
species in New Hampshire. To
say we are excited would be an
understatement.

biological information.

The official Count Day occurs

within a more inclusive twoweek count period, which
spanned January 1-15 during
which 110 bald eagles were
counted. NH Audubon also
records the number of eagles
seen during this15-day interval.
Overall long-term trends show
that the number of eagles counted during the one-day midwinter survey in New Hampshire
continues to double roughly
every 10 years; 55 eagles in
2005; 25 in 1994; and only 12
in 1984.

The Adventures
of Tom & Atticus

The trail up the Old Path had

been broken by someone earlier
today, or perhaps in the last couple of days, but a couple of inches of fresh powder was on top of
the tracks. It appears no matter
how often we hike North and
South Doublehead we take a
break at the exact same spot
without planning to. It's where
the trail starts to really climb and
the deciduous trees give way to
the evergreens. There is a large
rock there with enough space to
hold us both when we sit, but
when it's snowing like this we
don't linger. Instead it was a
break of about thirty seconds and
then it was off again. Off into the
night, the snow, and the shadows
of the forest on this very steep
pitch.

unusually high level of calcium
in the soil and bedrock. In many
cases, such as the one I was witnessing, the bedrock is fractured on a mountainside, making the calcium more available
for plants such as basswood.
What appears to be bouldery

push their roots deep into the
rocks to take advantage of this
opportunity.

THE TOWN INTHECOMINGYEAR.

ATTENTION WARREN VOTERS

I have previously served the town for two separate

terms as one of your selectmen, which I greatly
enjoyed . I am ready to serve again, if you wish.

We are all concerned with the tax rate. I believe in

saving where possible without causing problems
later on. Our buildings, roads and grounds need to
be maintained and our employees and elected officials need proper reimbursement for work performed.

Please be sure to take part at Town Meeting where

we all have the opportunity to decide spending
thus affecting our tax rate.

We do need to plan for the future and find new/better ways to function.

Waiting

At the moment, Im waiting.

Waiting while knitting, waiting

while writing, waiting over
shared laughter and the folding
of laundry. Waiting, for snow
to melt.

Snow in the pot atop the wood

stove, that is. (Im quite content to keep the snow outside
around until springtime.) Tis
the night for hair washing, and
this is how its done. With neither pipes nor the threat of
frozen plumbing, this time of
year all our water comes from
melting down pots of snow.
The river has long since iced
over, and chopping our way
through to the low water below
the ice is not terribly practical,
especially so given the uphill
haul through drifting snow on
the return trip. What is passable
in summer is not ideal for winter.

So here I am, waiting as the

wood stove's heat transforms
snow into warm wash water.
Ryan and I have finished dinner, Mica has licked our plates,
and the dishes are scrubbed.
We sit, he with coffee in hand,
me with hot water, first joking,
talking, sharing the days anecdotes and amusements. I pick
up my knitting as Ryan turns to
a book on Tibet; a few more
rounds are added to the sweater
Im making while we look at
pictures of Mount Kailash.
Ryan daydreams about a trip to
this remote and sacred peak,
some day. Mica sighs, glad to
be a homebody.

I check the pot: snow has condensed to half its original volume. Change is happening. I
add another log to the dwindling fire.

The knitting needles are put

away in exchange for pen and
paper. This is where these articles begin, from my bare hands
and a stack of scrap paper atop
the desk. Ryan, meanwhile,
grinds his coffee beans in
preparation for tomorrow
morning. The hand-held cast
iron grinder holds the cold well;
grasping it first thing on a
February morning is cold
indeed. Better to do the task
now, when it has warmed thoroughly with an afternoon and
evening beside the wood stove.

The pot of snow now holds a

few inches of water and a chunk
of slushy ice at its center. It
took some time to get here, but
the remaining stage will be
quick. Heating the water to
bath temperature is a more
rapid process than melting
snow into water. I continue
writing; Ryan sorts through our

sewing materials - a wool jacket

needs a new button. Through it
all, snippets of observations,
glances, chuckles, thoughts
unfold. A few words can convey a sentence, a smirk connote
the simple pleasure of sharing
space and an evenings time
together. Mica is silently present, punctuating his restful dog
repose with intermittent snores.

I lift the lid of the pot once

more, test the waters temperature with my fingertip. Its
warm, and this page is written.
I trade my pen for a towel, and
the final task of the evening.

Its certainly winter, but Spring

will be here before we know it.

Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, The winter months are cold

and long, and sometimes downright
brutal! But some how in the contemplation
of the beauty and newness of spring, we
find hope in its warmer temps, the newness of life
springing up all around, we begin to see the brown
earth beneath our feet once again, bringing a feeling
of new hope. Life is so much like that. We go
through long and short but nonetheless difficult
seasons in our life's journeys. Some as those hard
winter times, downright brutal! But,as we allow
ourselves to dare to look ahead with vision of new
and better days, we once again have hope. One
cannot really live without hope. We all need to
hope. We all should hope and envision a new and
better day! The Bible says, this too shall pass. The
Bible tells us, and life itself teaches us that it's what
we do with the waiting. How we perceive it,our
attitude, that helps us and actually helps determines
the what of what's ahead! Keep your cool.
Persevere with patience. Keep a good attitude.B e
stilland know that I am God, Psalm 46:10. God bless
you all. ~Submitted by Jeannine Bartlett

the seasonal New England
rhythm and receive practical
learning from eight instructors
while designing an effective
permaculture system for their
own property. The PDC is
especially useful for homeowners, planners, design professionals, community organizers,
farmers, and gardeners. It is
adapted to a wide variety of
learning styles and is presented
via lecture, images, video,
group discussion, hands on
experiences, exercises, and
design projects.
