Jose Saramago
The first part of the novel follows the experiences of the central characters
in the filthy, overcrowded asylum where they and other blind people have been
quarantined. Hygiene, living conditions, and morale degrade horrifically in a very
short period, mirroring the society outside.
The story then follows the doctor's wife, her husband, and their impromptu
family as they attempt to survive outside, cared for largely by the doctors wife,
who can still see (though she must hide this fact at first). The breakdown of
society is near total. Law and order, social services, government, schools, etc., no
longer function. Families have been separated and cannot find each other. People
squat in abandoned buildings and scrounge for food. Violence, disease, and
despair threaten to overwhelm human coping. The doctor and his wife and their
new family eventually make a permanent home in the doctor's house and are
establishing a new order to their lives when the blindness lifts from the city en
masse just as suddenly and inexplicably as it struck.
Review:
Blindness is the story a city hit by an epidemic of "white blindness" which spares
no one. Among the first to become blind are an opthalmologist and some of his
patient. Authorities confine the blind to an empty mental hospital used as a
quarantine camp.
The life of the camp quickly degenerates into a Hell on Earth when the blind are
not fed regularly and some are killed in by soldiers out of fear. Inside this
quarantine, the situation quickly turns dire as their supplies begin to run low and
the criminal element takes over, demanding sex for food.
Ultimately the group from the first ward with the doctor's wife as the leader is
able to escape into the city where they must stick together to survive and learn
how to cope as a group. Eventually they get back to the doctor's residence and
decide to stay there as a family. In the end they all regain their sight as quickly as
it was lost, leaving them to ponder the things that they learned about themselves
and about humanity during their time blind.
I can`t say I liked this book because I found it a bit hard to read because of
Saramago`s writing style using only commas and periods to punctuate his
sentences. Another reason for which I am not a fan of this book is the cruelty,
helplessness, and violence Saramago uses to describe what humans are capable
of doing and suffering out of the need to survive another day.
