Accounting

The accounting
profession is recession proof. As the
financial sector is a key
enabler and catalyst of
economic growth, the demand
for skilled accounting and finance
professionals will continue to grow in
the coming decades. In Malaysias
financial services industry alone, 60,000
accountants will be required by 2020.

Why this eld?

To keep the countrys economy buoyant, a number of industries have been identied by the
government as being important to national growth and the nancial services sector is one of them.
There is an increasing need for competent accountants and nancial talents to drive and support
Malaysia in achieving high-income nation status. In a sluggish economy, the demand for qualied
accountants is fuelled by the need to manage the nancial
aspect of a business adequately. A tougher business climate

Accountants are highly valued in various industries and

organisations because of the strategic roles they play in these entities. The demand for competent
accountants who are involved in decision-making processes within an organisation is now greater
than ever and as a result, accountants need to be more than technical advisers to succeed, says
Johan Idris of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants president.

There are two pathways to become a chartered
accountant. Students can either take the academic
or the professional route as explained in the charts
above. All pathways require three years of practical
experience.
Aside from attaining an accountancy degree,
advances in technology have resulted in an
increased demand for new skills and competencies
from fresh graduates.
Accountants and nance professionals must be
open to the changes created by big data, cloud,
mobile and social platforms, and face up to the
demands of cyber crimes, digital service deliveries
and articial intelligence, says Idris.
With the imminent move towards GST, technology is
an essential tool. It is vital to understand and use
appropriate software in the implementation of the
system especially for a large and diverse
organisation, he adds.

FCMA, and CGMA is the president of MIA. He
oversees all aspects of operations at the audit,
tax and advisory services company. He has
more than 23 years of both local and
international professional experience in the
audit and business advisory services.

The average starting salary for a fresh accounting

graduate is between RM2,500 and RM3,000. The
professional services industry and the nance and
insurance sector are the top employers within the accounting profession.

Islamic nance
The Islamic nance industry has rapidly expanded beyond
Muslim countries and this is evident with the increasing
demand for Islamic nancial professionals.
The global demand for Islamic nance professionals has
reached 50,000 per year. However, only 5,000 graduates
of Islamic banking and nance are produced globally each
year, which is not enough to keep up with the global
demand.

Job market

In Malaysia, there will be 56,000

new nance industry jobs,
including non-Islamic roles in the
next 10 years, particularly in
areas such as wealth
management, Shariah advisory
and corporate nance.
Source: Central Banks Financial Sector
Blueprint 2011-2020

In Malaysia, 35,000 qualied Islamic professionals are

needed by 2030, based on a report from the Islamic
Banking & Finance Institute Malaysia (IBFIM). The shortage of talent in Islamic nance is most
notable in areas of Shariah expertise. Shariah is the key pillar of Islamic nance from which Islamic
nance derives its unique characteristics. The Shariah injunctions require that Islamic nancial
transactions be accompanied by an underlying productive activity. In Islamic nance, there is always
a close link between nancial and productive ow.

Talent development initiatives by the government

Malaysia is the second largest provider of Islamic nance talents, based on Thomson Reuters
ndings. The country currently has 18 universities and 50 institutions providing Islamic nance

Southeast Asia
will need 67,400
aircraft technicians
and engineers by 2030,
according to plane manufacturer, Boeing.

AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE
Why this eld?
It is estimated that the Asia Pacic region will require 13,460 new airplanes by 2033, according to
Boeing. These new airplanes will replace older, less ecient airplanes. For each new plane, airline
companies need to hire and train a skilled workforce to keep these aircraft airworthy as these planes
often y throughout the day and night, seven days a week in
all types of weather.
With the growing presence of low-cost carriers with their
aordable fares and new routes, they are becoming an
important driver of the countrys tourism. The governments
Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) by Pemandu has
identied this as one of the key sectors in the business service
entry of National Key Economic Areas (NKEA).

Growth area
The global Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) service
industry is expected to be worth RM195.3 billion by 2020.
According to the governments ETP, the MRO industry in
Malaysia is expected to create 20,720 extra jobs and
contribute to the countrys wealth by over RM13 billion in
2020 . Malaysia is among the top three countries in Asia
Pacic for MRO services.

We need 21,000 people to be

employed in the MRO industry by
2020, but currently we only have
10,560. Our training and
academic institutions have the
capacity to supply 800 trained
workforce annually and this is
not enough to cater for the 2020
target. A shortage of more than
4,000 workers in the industry by
2020 will cause loss of income to
the country. More young
Malaysians are welcomed to be
part of this exciting and
challenging industry, says Datuk
Ir Kamarul zaman Zainal, senior
vice president of the Malaysian
Industry-Government Group for
High Technology.

Malaysia needs to produce 21,000 employment opportunities, although in the MRO sub-sector we
only have about 10,500 workers. At the moment, aircraft maintenance engineers who specialise in
helicopter turbines and avionics are rare and in demand. The increased demand is mainly driven by
the increased use of helicopters for both civil and government markets, and the fact that most
aircraft have avionics involved in everything including engines and ight controls.

SPM leavers who wish to pursue a career in this eld need to have at least a C in English, as
mandated by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA). The licensure programmes, which are being
oered by the 11 DCA-certied schools, each takes 5 years to complete and prepares the student
for the Aircraft Maintenance License Engineer (AML) given by the DCA. The programme for Aircraft
Maintenance License Technician takes 3 years to complete.
Presently, the country has 11 approved training organisations for aircraft maintenance programmes
and these are:
Malaysian Airline Engineering Training Centre
DILOG Training and Services
Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology
APR Aviation Training Centre
Malaysian Aviation Training Academy (MATA)
Kolej Antarabangsa Yayasan Melaka
ADTEC, Shah Alam
Malaysian Helicopter Services
Awan Inspirasi
Aviation Design Centre
Asian Aviation Centre
To qualify for AML, the applicant must be at least 21
years old and must have acquired the necessary
practical maintenance experience. Visit
http://www.dca.gov.my to view the full categories and
extra requirements. AML has categories and
subcategories. For instance, an applicant who would like
to become an aircraft engineer for helicopter turbines
must take the B1.3 license.

Most of Nilai University students are

retained by industry partners and this
reects the healthy demand for skilled and
qualied aircraft maintenance engineers.

Meeting industry demands

To help address the needs of the local MRO industry, Nilai University became one of the rst
institutions in Malaysia to oer a Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering its syllabus prepares
students for the all-important European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) B1-1 license examinations.

Kingston University.
After completing the one year top-up programme and the necessary bridging modules, successful
students will be conferred a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, which is
internationally-recognised and will allow students to pursue a MSc in Aircraft Engineering in the UK.
Nilai's degree programme is suitable for students who are keen to go far in the eld of aircraft
maintenance engineering. The EASA license enables students to climb the career ladder and be
eligible for supervisory and management positions in the future.

Salary and other benets

The starting salary for aircraft maintenance technicians can range from RM2,500 to RM3,500 while
licensed and experienced aircraft maintenance engineers can earn as much as RM16,000.

Solid foundation with soft skills

Nilai U provides extra modules to improve students soft
skills in an effort to improve their marketability.

It is one thing for candidates to claim they have the requisite soft
skills and quite another to back it up with a certificate from a
well-known organisation specialising in that field, says Datuk Dr
Megat Burhainuddin, Nilai Universitys (Nilai U) Vice-Chancellor.
Communication, teamwork, good personal etiquette, and leadership are just some of the soft skills that students here will get to
learn and improve upon.
These added value modules are very much in line with Nilai Us
philosophy of Enrichment for Life. Dr Megat explains that
students will not leave with just academic qualifications at the end
of their tenure here. They will also be equipped with all the life and
social skills which we hope will make them not just dynamic
employees who are highly sought after, but also model citizens
who will make positive contributions to their respective societies,
he explains. Degree students at Nilai U have to complete a total of
120 credits, including four mandatory university modules in
subjects detached from their core fields of study. They are given
the choice on a variety of topics such as Ethics, Critical Thinking,
Entrepreneurship and Public Speaking (please visit
www.nilai.edu.my for the complete listing).
The Dale Carnegie Skills for Success and Outward Bound Survival Skills modules are very popular
with students. The former appeals mainly to the Business Studies students as it is about corporate
conduct. Dale Carnegie is world-renowned and a certificate of completion from them will look
great on any rsum, says Dr Megat.
The key message is that a Nilai U education will give students much more than mere paper qualifications. We prepare students for life, as Dr Megat puts it succinctly. We do everything to ensure
that we keep our promise to parents of returning their children in better shape than when we
received them.

Taking off @ Nilai U

Nilai Us Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering
is highly popular among school leavers.

Nilai Universitys Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance

Engineering programme is an extremely popular
choice among school leavers because of several
reasons. Firstly, Nilai Universitys programme
prepares students for the all important European
Agency Safety Agencys B1-1 examinations, which is
the gateway towards becoming a fully licensed
aircraft maintenance engineer. This status is
achieved upon the successful completion of the
EASA modules and accumulating approximately ve
years of relevant work experience. Once certied as
a fully-licensed aircraft maintenance engineer, he or
she is able to certify the airworthiness of an aircraft.
Such qualied individuals are highly sought after,
with EASA credentials being the preferred qualication in most parts of the world (easa.europa.eu/home.php).
Secondly, Nilai University (Nilai U) has a
purpose-built hangar on campus featuring two
aircrafts for students to practice their skills on. The
aircraft provide students the opportunity to put
theory into practice and to gain essential hands-on
experience before embarking on their industrial
placements. The hangar also features audio-visual
rooms, workshops and lecture theatres, making Nilai
U one of the best equipped institutions oering this
programme.

Thirdly, students from the Diploma in Aircraft

Maintenance Engineering programme can also
further their studies to a one-year top-up Advanced
Diploma programme. Kingston University, UK has
recognised the Diploma and Advanced Diploma
programmes as being equivalent to its Degree in
Aircraft Engineering. Thus, students who complete
both the Diploma and Advanced Diploma
programmes will be awarded a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft
Engineering from Kingston University, UK. Students
can gain a degree in this highly specialised eld in
just three and a half years.
Last but not least, students are attracted to Nilai Us
diploma programme for its six month on the job
training (OJT) stint with some of the industrys most
notable names built into the syllabus. Nilai Us
industry partners include Air Asia, Air Asia X and
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The OJT provides students
the opportunity to gain essential work experience as
well as a chance to network with industry players.
Nilai U students will also benet from having a full
varsity experience mingling with students from
other disciplines and from various cultural backgrounds.

Pulsate, which will be setting up a big data centre and a data academy by the end of the year,
hopes to train 3,000 data specialists in Malaysia by 2020 to meet the growing demand for big data
solutions across dierent industries.
The setting up of the centre and academy will also help Malaysia compete with countries like South
Korea and Singapore and enable the country to become one of the big data hubs in the near
future.

Data Science

The global demand

for data specialists,
commonly known as
data scientists, is currently
estimated at 2,500 and will
reach 220,000 by 2017.

Why this eld?

With dreams of becoming a regional big data hub, the Malaysian government is preparing the
infrastructure that will require a huge supply of data scientists. The countrys low electricity tari,
bandwidth capacity, established data centre
business, and sound censorship and privacy
information guidelines make it a choice
destination for data-centric companies to set up

Realising this huge demand for talent, Pulsate, a
subsidiary of leading digital research agency Pulse
Group will be setting up a big data academy in
Kuala Lumpur. The institute, which will be
facilitated by the Multimedia Development
Corporation (MDeC), will train fresh graduates to

backgrounds in statistics,
mathematics, and economics
as there is strong background
already in the fundamentals
of macro and micro
correlations.

With the big data academy coming on stream, Chua says it will help in the training of data scientists
and facilitate Malaysia in climbing up the
value chain in the big data and analytics
world. Candidates for the academy will be
those with tertiary education majoring in
economics and mathematics.

What course/s can you take?

Sometimes referred as unicorns, the
skills of a data scientist are considered
rare. There are a few institutions in the
process of building undergraduate
programmes that will be akin to a
computer science degree. Students will
learn core skills but it will not be enough
to become a data scientist.
Typically, a good analyst would come
from a background in statistics,
mathematics, and economics as there is
already strong fundamentals of macro
and micro correlations, says Chua. The
ideal candidate would preferrably have
more than traditional market-research
skills.

According Bob Chua, PULSATE will be setting up

a big data centre and a data academy by the end
of the year. They hope to train 3,000 data
specialists in Malaysia by 2020 to meet the
growing demand for big data solutions across
dierent industries.

Just recently, the Malaysian Ministry of Education and Prestariang Group launched Big Data
Competency Centres across four universities and one polytechnic in Malaysia Universiti Utara
Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak,
and Politeknik Sultan Ibrahim. These institutions can provide certicate training for people who
want to enter the big data industry.

Growth area

Salary and other benets

All organisations regardless of size generate data and this will require a data scientist to organise,
manage, and make insights out of all the information they have collected. This is also true for
government organisations where various bodies try to understand consumer trends, patterns and
correlations in order to prevent crime, disease outbreaks, or catastrophes.

Data scientists are now the second highest paid job in the world after Oil and Gas geologists,
according to a recent survey by LinkedIn. A seasoned data scientist could earn anywhere within
RM711,000 to RM888,000 year within large multinational rms.

We now live in a world where data is being collected on all touch points of our lives: from our
Internet surng patterns and shopping behavior to our political interests and so forth. This only
means that those organisations who can harvest data or information into insights will have an
edge amongst their competitors, explains Bob Chua of Pulsate.

Education

Malaysia is a
leading destination
for education among
international students.
By 2020, the government
foresees 200,000 international
students studying in Malaysia.

Why this eld?

Education is one of the most important investments a
country makes in its people and its future. In this respect,
teachers play an important role in educating the youth of our
country. As a result, the Ministry of Education has made a
series of programmes and measures as stated in the
Malaysian Education Blueprint, which will make teaching a
career of choice among the countrys brightest students.

Teachers should be well

compensated for their
tireless service to the
nation. However, better
pay does not necessarily
mean performance pay.
Teachers should have a
high basic salary to be
given an incentive to join
the profession in the rst
place.

The Ministry targets to hire only the top 30 per cent of SPM
leavers for enrolment in teachers training institutes, says
Tengku Azian Tengku Shahriman, Director of Pemandu
National Key Result Area/National Key Economic Area
(Education). Because of this requirement, the government
wants to attract only those who are passionate about
teaching and ensure students enjoy learning in and outside the classroom.

Growth area
There are 410,000 primary and secondary teachers in Malaysia, and about 60 percent of these
teachers will be teaching in the next 20 years. According to Nurul Azian the director of Pemandu
National Key Result Area for Education, the countrys teacher population is relatively young, and the
demand for new teachers is expected to gradually decrease over time. Nevertheless, there are still
areas in teaching that currently require more teachers.

University/college lecturers
It is estimated that about 38 percent of
lecturers in Malaysian public
universities have a PhD. Under the
National Higher Education Strategic
Plan (2011-2015), the government
plans to employ 75 percent of lecturers
with PhD at ve research universities
UM, USM, UiTM, UKM and UPM.
To achieve this goal, MyBrain15, MyPhD
and MyMaster were developed to
provide funding for studies at
postgraduate level. These programmes
aim to produce 60,000 PhD holders
among Malaysians by the year 2023.
Currently, a postgraduate qualication
is not necessary to become a lecturer
but as more universities wish to
improve their global ranking, it is
important for a lecturer to have
completed a PhD.

Tengku Azian Tengku Shahriman is the Director

of PEMANDU National Key Result Area/National
Key Economic Area for Education.

What course/s can you take?

At present, preschool teachers are expected to have at least a diploma in early childhood education.
However, in the near future, a degree will be highly preferred by employers. Meanwhile, students
who wish to become English language teachers must have an A/A+ in English language and nished
a degree in education or other related courses. For those interested in becoming university
lecturers, a post graduate qualication (masters and PhD) is desirable especially among research
universities.
The educational programmes at the Faculty of Education and Communications in UNITAR
International University enable students to specialise in selected elds such as management, TESL
and guidance counseling. For undergraduates, UNITAR oers guidance and counseling, and
education programmes. Meanwhile, their master programmes cater for the dierent needs of
teachers and administrators in all education sectors.

Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE)

Salary and other benets

The target is to have universal pre-school enrolment by 2020. This expansion is expected to carry on
in the next few years. According to the Economic Transformation Programme by PEMANDU, about
30,000 teachers specialising in Early Childhood Education (ECE) will be needed by 2020. The diploma
requirement for ECE teachers is expected to be fully enforced in 2020. According to Nurul Azian, as
Malaysia becomes a high-income nation, it is expected that parents will require high quality
preschools to be made available.

Teachers used to be promoted based on tenure but this is expected to change as the Ministry of
Education is now implementing a performance management instrument that will assess teachers
performance annually. Through this new system, high performing teachers will be given better
compensation as their career track will be accelerated.

GMI Graduates lead the Industries

German Advanced Technology training gives extra niche

For over two decades, German-Malaysian Institute
(GMI) has become the trailblazer in the field of
engineering technology. The Managing Director of
GMI, Mr Yusoff Md Sahir shares with us many aspects
of German engineering which has made it a universal
benchmark.
What makes GMI engineering technology
programmes different from those offered by other
institutions?
GMI emphasises on the importance of perseverance
and persistence in becoming an expert in our fields of
specialisation. It is this concept that we base our
learning and training at GMI and this is done through
practice-based modules carried out at labs and
workshops. Moreover, teamwork, lifelong learning,
and quality outcome are also the basis of training.
Why are engineering technology programmes at
GMI competitive?
Our programmes are aligned to the demands of
industries, demands of manpower optimisation and
the changing trend in engineering fields itself. GMI
takes a proactive step by introducing alternative
energy technology as a new programme named
Diploma in Sustainable Energy & Power Distribution.
In 2013, we introduced three new programmes which
are highly relevant to the rapid growth of the
engineering world Diploma in Industrial Plant

Maintenance, Diploma in Sheet Metal Fabrication &

Product Development; and Diploma in Manufacturing
System. All three programmes anticipate high
demand of highly skilled workforce to fill up the
vacancies within the 12 NKEAs.
Are GMI graduates at par with graduates from
Germany?
GMI is working on narrowing the gap between those
graduating firsthand from German universities and
graduates from GMI. Technical Training Officers at
GMI are sent to undergo technical training in
Germany and to experience the learning and training
environment there, firsthand. This is complemented
by site visits to industries so that GMI is able to
emulate industry setting on home ground.
In addition, emphasis is placed on an eye for details
in prioritising tasks; identifying most feasible
troubleshooting methods; cost-effective production
action plans and of course, safety, while the officers
are there in Germany. Engineering graduates from
Germany are trained to become analytical and critical
thinkers in handling tasks.
Presently, GMI has only produced an approximately
4,700 graduates. These graduates have become the
backbone of any industry or organisation. That is
how special GMI graduates are in the eyes of the
industry for being a league of their own.

Aviation (maintenance, repair and overhaul)

The aviation industry is growing rapidly and needs more professional sta and engineers to maintain
aircraft. This growing industry presents aircraft engineers with plenty of opportunities and expertise
in helicopter turbines and avionics are in demand. According to the Ministry of Human Resources,
the country needs more than 16,000 aircraft engineers a year. However, in the last 15 years but we
have only produced about 3,000 licensed engineers in the last 15 years.

Did you

Engineering

According to Talent
Corporation Malaysia,
Malaysia needs more than
1,000 engineers annually to
meet industry demands. By
2020, it is expected that the
country should have approximately
250,000 engineers. Currently we have
78,076 engineering graduates and 11,344
professional engineers.

Why this eld?

This is a great time to become an engineer as there is an abundance of opportunities to work in
various industries and gain employment overseas. The Dewan Rakyat recently passed amendments
on three bills to liberalise professional services such as engineering, architecture and quantity
surveying. These amendments will enhance the delivery and quality of services, and encourage
healthy competition. Moreover, engineers will have better
opportunities to venture into new markets abroad.

Growth area
According to Ir Ashari Mohd Yakub, executive director of the
Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), there is a need for
expertise in the electric and electronic, oil and gas, mechanical
engineering, and chemical engineering elds among others.
Here are some of the leading sectors that are hiring engineers:
Property and construction
Over the next four years, the demand for skilled construction
talent will increase by 4.5% annually following the
governments Economic Transformation Programme.
Construction managers, site managers and site engineers will
be the most sought after professions in the job market.

Becoming a professional
engineer is simply a testament
of achievement of a graduate
worthy of recognition as a
professional. It is a reection of
his/her leadership, technical
competency, trustworthiness
and the ability to shoulder
heavy responsibility. The
recognition also receives
respect from fellow colleagues
and peers, says Ir Ashari Mohd
Yakub, executive director of
BEM.

This increase in demand corresponds with Malaysias boom in construction with the majority of the
demand coming from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Sabah and Sarawak.
Electric and electronic (E&E)
There are many work opportunities for fresh graduates in the oil and gas industry. The industrys
multidisciplinary nature requires every engineering sector to play their signicant roles. Engineers
are involved in a wide range of areas including conceptual or front-end engineering design, detailed
engineering, procurement services, construction management services and special studies.

What course/s can you take?

Choose mainstream engineering courses such as
mechanical, electrical and electronic, civil and
chemical. Although there are plenty of hybrid
courses such as materials, biochemical and
aeronautical programmes available, these
programmes only meet an area of specialisation in
certain industries. A mainstream engineering course
provides you the fundamentals that you can take to
any industry, says Ir Ashari.
Aside from sticking to the mainstream engineering
courses, students must choose engineering
programmes that are accredited by the BEM. The
list of accredited engineering programmes can be
found at www.bem.org.my.

Become a professional engineer

Competition among entry-level engineers is erce
and the key to becoming employable is by having
internship experience. Internships align with your
career goals and can help you gain an advantage
over your peers for future employment.

The engineering programmes oered at

the University of Nottingham Malaysia are
designed as recommended by the Board of
Engineers Malaysia and are identical to
those oered at Nottingham UK.

According to Ir Ashari, students must be given relevant work opportunities to validate their career
plans and keep them engaged in their engineering degree programmes. While pursuing their
degree, students can sign up for programmes and workshops at IEM to gain more experience.
A student member of IEM can network with practising engineers, attend technical talks, courses and
visits, enrol in a mentorship programme with a senior engineer especially for nal year projects, and
get potential industry training programme attachments.
A professional engineer registered with BEM is recognised and can be exempted from licensing in
other countries, says Ir Ashari. He adds that those who are qualied can advance in their careers,
become consultant engineers and gain employment overseas. Furthermore, professional engineers
tend to earn more than their non-licensed counterpart.

Salary and other benets

Engineering is among the worlds best paid professions. In Malaysia, engineers in the oil and gas
sector earn an average of RM6,353 while mechanical engineers and electronic/electrical engineers
earn an average of RM4,745 and RM4,982 a month respectively. At the managerial level, engineers in
the aviation and oil and gas sector earn an average of RM9,500 per month.

mechanical devices, and instruments for medical, surgical and dental procedures. Moving forward,
the industry aims to produce high-value products such as ultrasound diagnostic machines,

million and 800 jobs by 2020.
Aging population

Healthcare

An aging population, expanded

medical coverage and
sedentary lifestyle will
drive the demand for more
healthcare professionals in
Malaysia. More than 95,000 jobs
are expected to be created in this
sector in 2020.

Why this eld?

Malaysia is positioning itself to become the regions
healthcare destination of choice. However, the presence of
competition from Singapore and Thailand has required the
country to broaden its patient base by improving services and
specialist capacity. In this industry, there are a number of
areas that require more talent including pharmacy, dentistry
and medical specialist.
Pharmacy
Pharmacist-patient ratio target is expected to reach 1:2,000
by 2016. This, however, doesnt mean that the country need
more pharmacists. According to Azman Yahya, secretary of
Malaysian Pharmacy Board, more pharmacists will be needed
to reach the ratio of 1:1,400 by 2020.

There are several factors

contributing to the demand
for these professionals the
expansion of hospital
pharmacy clinic services
towards a more patient-focus
service, increasing role of
pharmacists in public health,
and support for the countrys
plans to export medicinal
products produced by local
pharmaceutical
manufacturers.

Dentistry
There is only one dentist for every 6,000 Malaysian. In the next 7 years, we will need at least 5,000
more dentists to achieve the target ratio of 1:3,000.
Medical specialists
Presently, we have plenty of general medical practitioners (GPs) who are not necessarily
knowledgeable and equipped to care and treat chronic conditions most commonly found in an
elderly population. Malaysia needs more oncologists, dermatologists, otolaryngologists, radiologists,
obstetricians and gynaecologists, and surgeons who specialise in cardiothoracic and hepatobiliary
surgeries.

Growth area
High-value medical devices manufacturing
Presently, the countrys medical devices manufacturing industry produces mostly medical gloves and
catheters, ophthalmic lenses, contraceptives, orthopaedic implants, radiation devices, electro-

Malaysias population is increasing steadily with age, as are the populations of other nations across
the world. By 2020, 10 percent of the countrys population will be above the age of 60 and by 2030,
the percentage of people aged above 60 will increase to 15 percent. This changing demographic
brings forth new healthcare concerns, which presents opportunities for people who wish to start a
career in aged care and retirement services industry. This segment is expected to create more than
7,000 jobs by 2020.
Malaysian pharmaceuticals/supplements
The arrival of major biotech players in Malaysia has paved the way for better collaboration between
the corporate sector and local research institutions. This growth area alone is expected to
contribute more than RM13 million to the countrys national income and create 12,440 jobs by 2020.
Healthcare travel
Healthcare providers are now capitalising on the countrys growing middle class and high-income
earners, the medical tourism sector, and strong demand for private healthcare providers. By 2020, it
is expected that healthcare travel will contribute to more than RM4 billion to the countrys national
income, and create about 5,300 jobs. Furthermore, about 2 million visitors are expected to visit
Malaysia for healthcare services in 2020.
Healthier lifestyle living
Malaysia has the highest obesity rate in Southeast Asia. According to Health Minister Datuk Seri S.
Subramaniam, the peoples unhealthy relationship with food presents a new health risk. Nearly 45
percent of Malaysian men and almost half of women are overweight or obese, according to a 2013
study by UK medical journal Lancet, compared to global rates at around 30 percent.

What course/s can you take?

There are many courses you can take to get into this industry. Like most professional courses, you
need to be careful in choosing the right one. This is especially true for those planning to take up
pharmacy, dentistry, and medicine courses as they have to be accredited by a Malaysian
professional body. Visit these websites to view the list of recognised local and overseas
programmes: Pharmacy www.pharmacy.gov.my; Dentistry http://mdc.moh.gov.my; Medicine

Salary and other benets

The salaries of healthcare professionals and workers are well above the national average. A
pharmacists salary can start at RM2,000 and reach a maximum of RM7,000 monthly. Nurses can
earn between RM2,300 and RM3,500 monthly while a radiographer can earn between RM1,800 and
RM2,100. Physiotherapists, medical ocers and optometrists earn between RM2,500 and RM3,000
monthly. Aside from earning good salaries, a career in the healthcare industry can be very
rewarding. Simply put, knowing that you have made an impact on the health of others is something
that lls most people with pride and a sense of personal achievement.
