The accounting
profession is recession proof. As the
financial sector is a key
enabler and catalyst of
economic growth, the demand
for skilled accounting and finance
professionals will continue to grow in
the coming decades. In Malaysias
financial services industry alone, 60,000
accountants will be required by 2020.
Growth area
The nancial services sector is expected to create 275,400
jobs and contribute RM180.2 billion to the countrys national
income.

Islamic nance
The Islamic nance industry has rapidly expanded beyond
Muslim countries and this is evident with the increasing
demand for Islamic nancial professionals.
The global demand for Islamic nance professionals has
reached 50,000 per year. However, only 5,000 graduates
of Islamic banking and nance are produced globally each
year, which is not enough to keep up with the global
demand.

Southeast Asia
will need 67,400
aircraft technicians
and engineers by 2030,
according to plane manufacturer, Boeing.
AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE
Why this eld?
It is estimated that the Asia Pacic region will require 13,460 new airplanes by 2033, according to
Boeing. These new airplanes will replace older, less ecient airplanes. For each new plane, airline
companies need to hire and train a skilled workforce to keep these aircraft airworthy as these planes
often y throughout the day and night, seven days a week in
all types of weather.
With the growing presence of low-cost carriers with their
aordable fares and new routes, they are becoming an
important driver of the countrys tourism. The governments
Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) by Pemandu has
identied this as one of the key sectors in the business service
entry of National Key Economic Areas (NKEA).
Growth area
The global Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) service
industry is expected to be worth RM195.3 billion by 2020.
According to the governments ETP, the MRO industry in
Malaysia is expected to create 20,720 extra jobs and
contribute to the countrys wealth by over RM13 billion in
2020 . Malaysia is among the top three countries in Asia
Pacic for MRO services.
Malaysia needs to produce 21,000 employment opportunities, although in the MRO sub-sector we
only have about 10,500 workers. At the moment, aircraft maintenance engineers who specialise in
helicopter turbines and avionics are rare and in demand. The increased demand is mainly driven by
the increased use of helicopters for both civil and government markets, and the fact that most
aircraft have avionics involved in everything including engines and ight controls.

SPM leavers who wish to pursue a career in this eld need to have at least a C in English, as
mandated by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA). The licensure programmes, which are being
oered by the 11 DCA-certied schools, each takes 5 years to complete and prepares the student
for the Aircraft Maintenance License Engineer (AML) given by the DCA. The programme for Aircraft
Maintenance License Technician takes 3 years to complete.
Presently, the country has 11 approved training organisations for aircraft maintenance programmes
and these are:
Malaysian Airline Engineering Training Centre
DILOG Training and Services
Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology
APR Aviation Training Centre
Malaysian Aviation Training Academy (MATA)
Kolej Antarabangsa Yayasan Melaka
ADTEC, Shah Alam
Malaysian Helicopter Services
Awan Inspirasi
Aviation Design Centre
Asian Aviation Centre
To qualify for AML, the applicant must be at least 21
years old and must have acquired the necessary
practical maintenance experience. Visit
http://www.dca.gov.my to view the full categories and
extra requirements. AML has categories and
subcategories. For instance, an applicant who would like
to become an aircraft engineer for helicopter turbines
must take the B1.3 license.

It is one thing for candidates to claim they have the requisite soft
skills and quite another to back it up with a certificate from a
well-known organisation specialising in that field, says Datuk Dr
Megat Burhainuddin, Nilai Universitys (Nilai U) Vice-Chancellor.
Communication, teamwork, good personal etiquette, and leadership are just some of the soft skills that students here will get to
learn and improve upon.
These added value modules are very much in line with Nilai Us
philosophy of Enrichment for Life. Dr Megat explains that
students will not leave with just academic qualifications at the end
of their tenure here. They will also be equipped with all the life and
social skills which we hope will make them not just dynamic
employees who are highly sought after, but also model citizens
who will make positive contributions to their respective societies,
he explains. Degree students at Nilai U have to complete a total of
120 credits, including four mandatory university modules in
subjects detached from their core fields of study. They are given
the choice on a variety of topics such as Ethics, Critical Thinking,
Entrepreneurship and Public Speaking (please visit
www.nilai.edu.my for the complete listing).
The Dale Carnegie Skills for Success and Outward Bound Survival Skills modules are very popular
with students. The former appeals mainly to the Business Studies students as it is about corporate
conduct. Dale Carnegie is world-renowned and a certificate of completion from them will look
great on any rsum, says Dr Megat.
The key message is that a Nilai U education will give students much more than mere paper qualifications. We prepare students for life, as Dr Megat puts it succinctly. We do everything to ensure
that we keep our promise to parents of returning their children in better shape than when we
received them.
Pulsate, which will be setting up a big data centre and a data academy by the end of the year,
hopes to train 3,000 data specialists in Malaysia by 2020 to meet the growing demand for big data
solutions across dierent industries.
The setting up of the centre and academy will also help Malaysia compete with countries like South
Korea and Singapore and enable the country to become one of the big data hubs in the near
future.

Data Science
With the big data academy coming on stream, Chua says it will help in the training of data scientists
and facilitate Malaysia in climbing up the
value chain in the big data and analytics
world. Candidates for the academy will be
those with tertiary education majoring in
economics and mathematics.
Just recently, the Malaysian Ministry of Education and Prestariang Group launched Big Data
Competency Centres across four universities and one polytechnic in Malaysia Universiti Utara
Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak,
and Politeknik Sultan Ibrahim. These institutions can provide certicate training for people who
want to enter the big data industry.
Growth area
All organisations regardless of size generate data and this will require a data scientist to organise,
manage, and make insights out of all the information they have collected. This is also true for
government organisations where various bodies try to understand consumer trends, patterns and
correlations in order to prevent crime, disease outbreaks, or catastrophes.
Data scientists are now the second highest paid job in the world after Oil and Gas geologists,
according to a recent survey by LinkedIn. A seasoned data scientist could earn anywhere within
RM711,000 to RM888,000 year within large multinational rms.
We now live in a world where data is being collected on all touch points of our lives: from our
Internet surng patterns and shopping behavior to our political interests and so forth. This only
means that those organisations who can harvest data or information into insights will have an
edge amongst their competitors, explains Bob Chua of Pulsate.

Education
Malaysia is a
leading destination
for education among
international students.
By 2020, the government
foresees 200,000 international
students studying in Malaysia.
The Ministry targets to hire only the top 30 per cent of SPM
leavers for enrolment in teachers training institutes, says
Tengku Azian Tengku Shahriman, Director of Pemandu
National Key Result Area/National Key Economic Area
(Education). Because of this requirement, the government
wants to attract only those who are passionate about
teaching and ensure students enjoy learning in and outside the classroom.
Growth area
There are 410,000 primary and secondary teachers in Malaysia, and about 60 percent of these
teachers will be teaching in the next 20 years. According to Nurul Azian the director of Pemandu
National Key Result Area for Education, the countrys teacher population is relatively young, and the
demand for new teachers is expected to gradually decrease over time. Nevertheless, there are still
areas in teaching that currently require more teachers.
University/college lecturers
It is estimated that about 38 percent of
lecturers in Malaysian public
universities have a PhD. Under the
National Higher Education Strategic
Plan (2011-2015), the government
plans to employ 75 percent of lecturers
with PhD at ve research universities
UM, USM, UiTM, UKM and UPM.
To achieve this goal, MyBrain15, MyPhD
and MyMaster were developed to
provide funding for studies at
postgraduate level. These programmes
aim to produce 60,000 PhD holders
among Malaysians by the year 2023.
Currently, a postgraduate qualication
is not necessary to become a lecturer
but as more universities wish to
improve their global ranking, it is
important for a lecturer to have
completed a PhD.
The target is to have universal pre-school enrolment by 2020. This expansion is expected to carry on
in the next few years. According to the Economic Transformation Programme by PEMANDU, about
30,000 teachers specialising in Early Childhood Education (ECE) will be needed by 2020. The diploma
requirement for ECE teachers is expected to be fully enforced in 2020. According to Nurul Azian, as
Malaysia becomes a high-income nation, it is expected that parents will require high quality
preschools to be made available.
Teachers used to be promoted based on tenure but this is expected to change as the Ministry of
Education is now implementing a performance management instrument that will assess teachers
performance annually. Through this new system, high performing teachers will be given better
compensation as their career track will be accelerated.

Engineering
According to Talent
Corporation Malaysia,
Malaysia needs more than
1,000 engineers annually to
meet industry demands. By
2020, it is expected that the
country should have approximately
250,000 engineers. Currently we have
78,076 engineering graduates and 11,344
professional engineers.
Growth area
According to Ir Ashari Mohd Yakub, executive director of the
Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), there is a need for
expertise in the electric and electronic, oil and gas, mechanical
engineering, and chemical engineering elds among others.
Here are some of the leading sectors that are hiring engineers:
Property and construction
Over the next four years, the demand for skilled construction
talent will increase by 4.5% annually following the
governments Economic Transformation Programme.
Construction managers, site managers and site engineers will
be the most sought after professions in the job market.
Becoming a professional
engineer is simply a testament
of achievement of a graduate
worthy of recognition as a
professional. It is a reection of
his/her leadership, technical
competency, trustworthiness
and the ability to shoulder
heavy responsibility. The
recognition also receives
respect from fellow colleagues
and peers, says Ir Ashari Mohd
Yakub, executive director of
BEM.
This increase in demand corresponds with Malaysias boom in construction with the majority of the
demand coming from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Sabah and Sarawak.
Electric and electronic (E&E)
There are many work opportunities for fresh graduates in the oil and gas industry. The industrys
multidisciplinary nature requires every engineering sector to play their signicant roles. Engineers
are involved in a wide range of areas including conceptual or front-end engineering design, detailed
engineering, procurement services, construction management services and special studies.
26
According to Ir Ashari, students must be given relevant work opportunities to validate their career
plans and keep them engaged in their engineering degree programmes. While pursuing their
degree, students can sign up for programmes and workshops at IEM to gain more experience.
A student member of IEM can network with practising engineers, attend technical talks, courses and
visits, enrol in a mentorship programme with a senior engineer especially for nal year projects, and
get potential industry training programme attachments.
A professional engineer registered with BEM is recognised and can be exempted from licensing in
other countries, says Ir Ashari. He adds that those who are qualied can advance in their careers,
become consultant engineers and gain employment overseas. Furthermore, professional engineers
tend to earn more than their non-licensed counterpart.

Malaysias population is increasing steadily with age, as are the populations of other nations across
the world. By 2020, 10 percent of the countrys population will be above the age of 60 and by 2030,
the percentage of people aged above 60 will increase to 15 percent. This changing demographic
brings forth new healthcare concerns, which presents opportunities for people who wish to start a
career in aged care and retirement services industry. This segment is expected to create more than
7,000 jobs by 2020.
Malaysian pharmaceuticals/supplements
The arrival of major biotech players in Malaysia has paved the way for better collaboration between
the corporate sector and local research institutions. This growth area alone is expected to
contribute more than RM13 million to the countrys national income and create 12,440 jobs by 2020.
Healthcare travel
Healthcare providers are now capitalising on the countrys growing middle class and high-income
earners, the medical tourism sector, and strong demand for private healthcare providers. By 2020, it
is expected that healthcare travel will contribute to more than RM4 billion to the countrys national
income, and create about 5,300 jobs. Furthermore, about 2 million visitors are expected to visit
Malaysia for healthcare services in 2020.
Healthier lifestyle living
Malaysia has the highest obesity rate in Southeast Asia. According to Health Minister Datuk Seri S.
Subramaniam, the peoples unhealthy relationship with food presents a new health risk. Nearly 45
percent of Malaysian men and almost half of women are overweight or obese, according to a 2013
study by UK medical journal Lancet, compared to global rates at around 30 percent.
