IwenttotheLonarCraterbyataxifromAurungabad.Reachedthe
placein2.5hrs.Itsquitescenicandbeautifulbutnotverytourist
friendly.AcompletedisappointmentwastheMTDCthatservedus
foodwithbugs.Thewashroomfacilitieswereinadequate(toputit
mildly).Thestretchofroadalongthecrateroffersanincredibleview.
However,theroadisbumpyandnotmade.Youcantrekdowntothe
lake.However,sincewewerepressedfortime,wedecidednottodo
so.
WealsovisitedtheGomukhtemple.Unfortunately,thistempleisbeing
restoredandsowecouldnotseemuchofit.Itisquitepassable.
WethenvisitedtheDaityaSudantemple.Thistemplecomesasa
completesurprise.Notmanypeopleincludingthelocalsknowaboutit.
However,itsabeautifulmonumentwithcarvingsdoneonstoneall
over.Unfortunately,itain'tmaintainedwellandiscrumbling.Ifvisiting
Lonarlake,Iwouldsurelyrecommendastopoveratthistemple.

WehadbeingtoAurangabadalongwiththeentirefamilyfor4nights
5daystay&enjoyment.Thefirstdaywasreservedforlocalsight
seeingincludingtheDaulatabadfort,Ellora,Grenshewartempleetc.
SeconddaywasexclsivelyforAjantaCaveswhilethirddaywasfor
LonarCrater.Thoughmostofthefamilymemberswerereluctantto
moveontheyoungergeerationwasfullychargedtoseethecater
consideringthegeographicalbackgorund.Hencewewereallonthe
waytothecraterbyearlymorning7:30hrs.
Lonarcraterisroughly160kmsfromAurangabad,95kmsfromJalana,
60kmsfromShindkhed&10kmsfromSultanpur.Routefrom
Aurangabadisalsointhesamesequence.RoadfromAurangabadto
Jalanaissuperb(fourlaneTolltopay).FromJalanaonwardsitistwo
lanebutconditionistolerableaswewereexpectingamuchworst
road.OnlyforfewpatchesnearDusarbidithasbecometotallyramped
butitislimitedtoonlyfewkmsotherwiseyoucanspeedupwith70to
80kms/hrspeed.IfyouarealocalresidentofMaharashtrayoucan
alsovisit'Jijamatashrusti'creatednearShinkhedbysomelocal
organisations.FromSultanpuryouhavetotakearightturntowards
Lonarcity.ThisentirejourneyfromAurangabadfromLonartakes
around3hourswithonecoffeebreakinbetween.
Lonarcraterisjust12kmsfromtheLonartown(atalukaplace).You
willrarefindanyhotelshenceMTDCistheBestavailableoption
thoughitdonotmatchtheaveragehotelratings.Butwhowantstorate
theHotelWewereheretoenjoythenaturearound&beliveeveryone
withusfeltlikeit'saperfectplacetobearoundatleastonce.Wewere
inLonarataround10:30hrs.Wewentaroundtheentireplacelike
Vishnutemple(nexttothetown),Rajurganesh,followedbyShiva
templejustbelowtheVishnutemplebutabovethecraterwaterlevel.
Thenwemovedontotrekthecraterwaterlevelsaroundtheentire
diameter.WithsomelocalguidancewelearntabouttheKamaljaimata
mandirjustneartothecraterwaterlevelbutdeepintotheHole.Itcan
bespotedfromtheVishnumandirexactly180degreeopposite.
HencewemovedontotheMTDCresortwherefewseniormembers
wereexpectedtoboarddownwhileotherwereplanningfordownhill
trekintothecrater.Butsuprisingnooneleftout.Hencewewentfora
trekdownthecratertotheKamaljaimatamandir.Beliveitisoneofthe
Bestplacefilledupwithtotalnature.Youwillonlyhearbirdswondering
around.Beautifulplacetobein.Withinhalfanhourtrekwewereinto
thecraterneartheancientmandircalledasKamaljaimatamandirwith
manystoriesattachedtoit&thecrater.Whattobeliveisuptoyou&
yourfaithlevels.Butyoucansurelyenjoythenaturearound.Wewere
thereforanhour&revertedbacktotheMTDCresort.Hadourlate
lunch&wereouttoplayfootballintheMTDCvechileparkingarea.It's
averygoodplacebutmaybehaslimitedmanpoweraswellas
aminitiesasnoonevisitthisplacearoundtheyear.Youcanseesome
visitorslikeuseitherinthemonthofOctortheyearend.Otherwise
entireyeartheresortisemptyhencehaslimitationsonmakingService
availablebutrestassureditisasafeplacetobeinbothLonarcrater
aswellastheMTDCresort.Wouldsurelysuggesttovisitthisplaceif
youareinAurangabadforatourtoAnjanta/Ellora.Thoughnotequal
butworthvisitingatonce.

LonarCrateris90kmsfromJalnainMaharashtra.Itisalsoaccessible
fromMalkapur,butJalnaisafarbetterbetduetotherelativelylarger
sizeofthetown.ThereareregulartrainsfromMumbaitoboththese
stations.WehiredthisdrivercalledVilasandheisbasedinLonar.We
paidRs.1,500/foraonewaytripandhesaidhecouldbecontacted
at[].
Wespent24hoursatLonarandstayedattheMTDCresortthere.itis
oneofthebetterresortsthatMTDChastoofferandisjustacrossthe
crater.AnotheroptionisthePWDguesthousewhichisonlya5minute
walkfromMTDC.Theviewfromthisguesthouseistodieforandthe
rooms(3inall,Ithink)costonly200buckseach.Soatthisrateitmay
makealotofsensetostayattheMTDCfacilityandenjoyanevening
bonfireordrinkattheguesthousebybookingthesameaswell.The
PWDguesthousecanbebookedbycalling[].MTDCcanbebooked
ontheirwebsite.
AtMTDC,youmayaskforalocalguidenamedRameshwhowilltake
youdowntothecraterandonalovelywalkaroundaswell.He
chargedus200bucksforthesame.
Lonarisalovelyplaceandisextremelysecluded.Youareunlikelyto
runintolargegroupsofnoisyholidayersandthefacilitiesatMTDCis
goodforkidsandseniorcitizensaswell.DonotstayattheLonartown
areatoonoisy,small,congestedandchaotic.2daysaremorethan
enough,thoughImayrecommendthisplacefor24hoursaswell.
