CFE 102: CHRISTIAN MORALITY IN OUR TIMES

Second Semester AY 2021-2022

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

General Instructions:
1. Write your answer in five sentences.
2. Give a concrete example for each to justify your answer.
3. Write your answer in standard written English.

A. EXPLAIN (10 points each)

1. Sin (can be defined as) setting ourselves and our choices against God's will and
against the good of others. It has painful consequences not only for individuals but also
for the society. How is this so?

In the beginning, God created human beings in the likeness of his own image, which
means that he has provided us with his wisdom and knowledge. He gave us the
freedom to choose between right and wrong but he had also reprimanded us to stay
away from sins, even stating these basic acts in the Bible and in the commandments.
We are aware that everything that is bad has always a consequence, such as affecting
not only ourselves but also our relationship with God and with our neighbors. Let us take
for instance the story of Adam and Eve, which explains that lying displays a simple but
direct example of such a dilemma of perpetrating sin as it always results in an
unwanted upshot such as being banished from the Garden of Eden. We truly sometimes
benefit from the sin that we do, but the time will come where it will all drop off to a
worse end for others sometimes us not even knowing.

2. Sin can cut me off from God and can turn me against my neighbor.

In my own insight, God is the most loving, understanding, and forgiving but he can also
be the most frightening, terrifying when he is angry. Ever since Adam and Eve lied, and
disobeyed God and was banished from the Garden, sin has already begun and was
passed on up to this generation, but let us not be troubled for we have the guidance
and knowledge of our God to overcome sin. Sinning can turn us against our neighbor,
as human dignity and high morale is important, sinning can also cut us off from God but
by repenting and overcoming these deeds of evil we can go back to his presence. Let
us take for instance what Cain had done to his brother Abel whom he committed
murder because of jealousy, it is very clear that murder is a taboo from God
considering that it is the highest of all sins and God who saw all that happened
punished him yet still protected and watched over him. But we must be warn that not
everything is forgiven, we have the knowledge to determine what is right and evil, and
neglecting the idea that we are sinning is very wrong from the eyes of the almighty and
of our neighbors.

B. SITUATION ANALYSIS (10 points each)

1. Lita, your close friend has been saying bad things about you behind your back. You
came to know of this from another friend. You want so much to get even by revealing
to your other friends the secrets Lita has entrusted to you. Guided by respect for human
dignity, Will you do it or will you not? Why?

Obviously, my friend Lita is morally responsible for hurting me as her friend and for
stabbing me in the back, not giving importance to the memories that we made, but the
circumstances of her action might have had a reason. In reality, I will be furious at what
she had done and think about getting back at her, such as destroying her image to
other people or do also what she had done. But knowing and guided by respect for
human dignity, I will not do it, this is because God said when someone hits you with a
stone, hit them back with a loaf of bread. As close friends, I might have said something
that offended her and hurt her feelings and that made her talked like that behind my
back, although what she did was wrong, I totally understand because what I did was

also wrong. Relating this situation with my friends, we also have misunderstandings
sometimes but will get fixed a moment later, and it came to me that Lita did that thing
because she was afraid to tell it straight to me, and she was finding ways how to release
her anger.

2. As a resident in an upscale subdivision, you have plenty of water because your

subdivision has a deep well. The fee for water consumption is incorporated in your
monthly subdivision maintenance dues. If you use the water wastefully, are you
exercising true freedom? Justify your answer.

Freedom is given to us not to do unjustifiable things but to be able to give light to our
surroundings, and that wasting is not a good thing to do. Because I have the privilege to
have more water, I can consume as much water I want but not to the extent that I will
waste it, for this idea is basically wrong as it displays that although it is possible to use as
much as I want, the knowledge that God gave me about consideration will no longer
be around me. God made us equal, though some are more privileged, it is only the
truth that we also must be treated equal. We must always remember that despite our
abundance in anything, every unethical actions always lead to uncertain results. Let us
learn from the story of the rich man who ignored the poor Lazarus outside his gate who
begged for food that in the end when the rich man died he walked up in hell and saw
the poor Lazarus with Abraham up above.
