HALLIBURTON

Bringing Old Fields Back to Life

As producers are driven to improve returns from their assets
while simultaneously experiencing a decline in discoveries of
significant major reservoirstheir need to recover more from
existing reservoirs is growing. Mature fields account for 70 percent
of the worlds production, with many in the secondary or tertiary
production phases. Recoveries under 35 percent are common due
to geological characteristics, resource constraints or operational
inefficiencies from old technology. How to increase recoveries and
production in these fields, often with reduced resources, is the
dilemma facing most operators.
Halliburton understands that operators need to enhance production
while lowering their CAPEX and OPEX costs. The world over, we
possess an understanding of the reservoir and the vast range of
technologies used to recover hydrocarbons economically.

Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)

and Service Quality
Mature fields need more emphasis on HSE and service quality than
other types of fields. Climbing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide
concentration levels during waterflood operations increase risk to
operating personnel, and speed equipment corrosion. HSE processes
and procedures must take into account these reactions. To better
control risk at the job site, the Halliburton Management System
delivers consistent documented work processes, including global
and embedded risk mitigation, via the Intranet. In turn, our
Performance Improvement Initiative (PII) process drives continuous
improvement in the HSE and service quality arenas. The resulting
higher service quality reduces costs for the customera much
needed requirement for a mature asset.
For example, many older wells were originally drilled with oil-based
fluids. Halliburton now offers a family of environmentally friendly
water-based fluids that perform as well or better than oil-based
fluids while minimizing environmental impact. These highperformance systems include HYDRO-GUARD, BOREMAX
and PerformaDril fluids with unique polymer packages. The
BOREMAX system has gained wide acceptance among operators
drilling with lower daily costs in mature fields. To further reduce
risk to the environment, Baroids Total Fluids Management services
offer proven technologies and procedures that help minimize
drilling waste streams and ensure compliance with even the most
stringent regulations.

Maximizing Oilfield Recovery

Determining if potential re-engineering or improvement
operations can be profitable is a critical decision in mature
asset exploitation.

When you formulate an improvement plan for your field, optimizing

long-term production and profits means that you need the best
thinking from all relevant disciplines: geology, geophysics, reservoir,
drilling, facilities, production and operations aligned to the economics.
A comprehensive mature field development plan does the following:
Maintains a holistic perspective on both surface
facilities and subsurface issues
Allows you to get the most from your assets, whether
new or existing
Creates the most favorable long-term production plan
at the most reasonable cost
Ensures the optimum ability to manage the most likely
scenarios you will encounter as the field is depleted
Promotes the achievement of profitable economics
after field re-engineering execution has taken place.
Whether re-interpreting seismic data to identify unknown
attributes, understanding the complex geomechanical forces at work
in your reservoir or performing detailed scenario analyses to
produce a plan that best addresses your objectives, Landmark
Consulting & Services has the experience to help you achieve
sustainable production of your mature assets. From the
rehabilitation of a single underperforming well to the
optimization of complex networks serving an entire reservoir,
we can help your organization get better performance from
your producing assets.

Identifying and Determining Remaining

Recoverable Fluids
To enhance production, customers face key challenges: identifying
potential recoverable fluids; managing cost-effective drilling,
completion and intervention; increasing production; and
minimizing unwanted production of sand and water. In all these
areas, Halliburton leverages its integrated expertise and thorough
understanding of the reservoir to build a fit-for-purpose solution
that meets your budget.

Identifying
Bypassed Zones
Halliburton Logging & Perforating
and Sperry-Sun can create a more
accurate view of the reservoir during
and after the drilling process which,
in turn, translates into better
production plan decisions.
Whether utilizing production
profiles from a production logging
run, pressure/fluid samples from a

GeoTap or MRILab/RDT formation pressure tester, porosity data

from a sonic log BAT LWD or WaveSonic wireline, saturations
from a pulsed neutron Thermal Multigate Decay-Lithology
(TMD-L) or Reservoir Monitor Tool (RMT Elite) or magnetic
resonance device such as our MRIL, or MRIL-WD, our formation
evaluation services provide a wealth of data for successful
monitoring and optimization. Data can be verified by actual core
measurements acquired by Security DBS, in combination with
Westport laboratory analyses, which provides core log correlations
and petrophysical analysis. Openhole to cased hole, coring or
laboratory analyses, Halliburton offers multiple solutions that
contribute to improving reservoir recovery.

Synthesizing Accurate Openhole Logs

from Surrounding Wells
When conventional openhole log measurements are unavailable, an
innovative approach for in-field wells is the Chi Modeling service.
Chi Modeling uses
artificial intelligence
technology in which
proprietary algorithms are
applied within a neural
network to predict highly
accurate triple- and
quad-combo openhole data
based on pulsed-neutron
cased-hole data. The
service is used in mature
fields to screen old wells to
determine whether they are workover candidates or should be
considered for plug and abandonment. Formation evaluation for
producing wells lacking openhole logs can quickly be accomplished
through pulsed-neutron logs that are recorded through tubing.
This helps to:
Evaluate reservoirs for bypassed reserves
Correct for missing data due to poor borehole conditions
and missing LWD sections
Minimize production lost during acquisition by using
pulsed neutron tools through tubing.

Determining Water Saturations and Porosities

Halliburtons reservoir monitoring technologies also provide
critical data through casing. The TMD-L and RMT Elite
logging tools can improve interpretation, determine lithology
and provide accurate water saturation interpretation over a
broad range of borehole conditions and porosities.

Enhancing Production Through Infill Drilling

The best technical solution must also be economical. Understanding
your reservoir is crucial, as is the development of a cost-effective
drilling program, for realizing economical exploitation of mature
assets. Halliburton has the solution, whether its replacing wells via
slot recovery on constrained platforms, installing a SperryRite
advanced reservoir drainage multilateral system to minimize the
capital expenditure required to tap marginal reserves, or utilizing

the Evader gyro measurement-while-drilling (MWD) service

to reduce AFE or minimize possible safety and environmental risks
for a re-entry sidetrack in casing.
The more mature an asset, the more refined the earth model can
become. However, the smaller targets that typify mature assets often
require complex well paths and more accurate wellbore positioning.
Correlation of the real time logs in the over-burden and accurate
wellbore placement in the reservoir require continuous monitoring,
interpretation and decisions.
Combined with its geosteering specialists, real time monitoring,
purpose-built geosteering application software and deep-reading
and azimuthal logging-while-drilling (LWD) measurements,
Sperry-Suns StrataSteer 3D geosteering service utilizes an iterative
Model-Measure-Interpret-Optimize process to minimize risk and
uncertainty during the drilling process. Extensive analysis and
planning can enable a project well to be predrilled in the computer
to optimize the well plan, select the most appropriate downhole
drilling and formation evaluation sensors, identify key decision
points, determine maximum reservoir drainage and plan
contingency actions. During real time geosteering operations, LWD
measurements are acquired at the well site and replicated at the
customers office through Halliburtons INSITE data acquisition,
display and interpretation system. Geosteering specialists work with
asset team members to determine the wellbores stratigraphic
position through correlation of the real time LWD logs with
synthetic model logs. The real time data can then be updated in
Landmark Graphics OpenWorks software, enabling drillers,
geologists, petrophysicists and geophysicists to view real time
updates to the well path and formation evaluation datamud logs,
resistivity, gamma ray, etc.in a 3-D visualization environment.
This real time approach is designed not only to determine the
stratigraphic position of the well but to do so rapidly enough to
prevent exits from the target formation, rather than simply detect
exits after they have happened.

Increasing Production Through Better

Optimization and Stimulation
A consistent focus on meeting operators needs for their mature
assets led Halliburton to establish one of the industrys first
reservoir overview studies of processeswhich has resulted in
a superior process that ensures what is done to the field from the
production optimization standpoint is the right thing to do.
Halliburtons Sigma process reviews the original reservoir qualities
and drilling and completion practices, then helps the engineer
recommend more effective reservoir optimization practices.
For example, acidizing may be recommended over hydraulic
fracturing, given the right conditions.

Stimulation Through Acidizing

Halliburtons new carbonate and sandstone acid-stimulation
processes, along with the STIM2001 simulator, bring new levels of

precision and cost-effectiveness to acidizing.Acid stimulation is not

a total solution to poor reservoir quality. However, a full range of
acid treatments is available to help boost production. Matrix
acidizing treatments can improve connectivity with the nearwellbore region. Fracture acidizing treatments can be designed to
penetrate deep into lower-permeability rock. Results of formation
evaluations using both Carbonate 20/20SM and Sandstone 2000SM
services provide input data for the STIM2001 matrix simulator, a
solutions-oriented software package that can effectively guide
stimulation selection, including acidizing, fracturing and
reperforating. STIM2001 software can evaluate the reasons for lost
production in one well or a series of wells, and then rank the wells
studied according to the best value for each stimulation dollar
spent. Obtaining optimum results from any of the various
formulations and procedures depends on a thorough understanding
of formation mineralogy. The system can determine the wells skin
value, the damage mechanisms in play, applicable remedies and the
ideal production rate. It can guide fluid selection, recommend fluid
diversion programs, simulate fluid flows in both sandstone and
carbonates (including wormholing) and automatically generate
reports based upon single-entry data.

Increasing Production for Longer Time Periods

viscosity which corresponds to downhole performance rather

than the polymer concentration.

Pinpoint Stimulation: Directing Stimulation for

More Effective Fractures
Improving the precision with which stimulation tools and
equipment position the treatment in relation to wellbore zones
of interest has brought about a new level of effectiveness in
hydraulically stimulating oil and gas wells. Halliburtons Cobra
Frac, CobraMaxSM and SurgiFrac services are advanced
solutions for implementing
pinpoint stimulation.
Cobra Frac service combines
coiled tubing and an exclusive
bottomhole assembly to
effectively stimulate multiple
lenticular hydrocarbon-bearing
reservoirs in vertical well
completions.After conventional
perforating, multiple zones can
typically be treated with a single
trip into the well.

Hydraulic fracturing is the mainstay for stimulation in mature

fields. It yields quick production increases by creating new fractures
or extending existing and natural ones. Refracturing a zone is
commonly done once zones have declined to unacceptable
production levels. Halliburtons SilverStim, SilverStim LT,
HMP, SeaQuest and Sirocco fluids are low-polymer-loading
fluids that can be used with Halliburtons conductivity enhancers
SandWedge and Expedite servicesto achieve highly
conductive fractures that help provide more production for a
longer time period.

CobraMax service extends the

benefits of coiled tubing-based
fracturing to deeper, larger
intervals. Hydra-Jet technology
is used to create perforations and
initiate the fracture. Then the
main fracture treatment is
pumped down the annulus.
The process performs multiple perforating and fracturing
operations in a single trip.

Performance-Based Fracturing Fluids

The SurgiFrac service is typically used in horizontal completions

either cased-hole or openholeto surgically place fractures at
specific targets in a wellbore without the need for mechanical
isolation. No pre-perforating is required and multiple fractures
can be created successively in a single trip into the well. Pinpoint
stimulations (Cobra Frac and SurgiFrac) result in an effectively
stimulated well completion.

One of the most significant areas of mature field performance

advancement has been in fracturing fluid technology. Until recently,
most fracturing fluid systems were designed and priced with the
primary focus on polymer concentration (lb/Mgal). This standard
was established years ago because polymer concentration was the
primary means of modifying fluid performanceand the resulting
value to the operator. Today, thanks to advanced chemical knowledge
and new technologies, polymer concentration is not always the
primary component that drives fluid performance and value. Nor is
it an adequate indicator of fluid characteristics. Halliburton is taking
the lead in introducing a performance-based approach called the
vis system. This approach enables Halliburton to optimize fluid
performance based on what is required for optimum performance
at the reservoir rather than being limited by the quantities of
various fluid components. Under this new system, fluid
performance and price are benchmarked on the base gel

Improving Fracture Conductivity

for Longer Time
When designing a frac, customers are planning for uninterrupted
reservoir fluid flow, while wanting high levels of conductivity for
the short term and long term. Halliburton technologies help achieve

conductivity endurance in a variety of ways:

Increasing proppant pack conductivity
Reducing effects of production cycling
Maintaining proppant pack permeability
Immobilizing fines to reduce intrusion and plugging
Reducing proppant flowback.
Recent third-party laboratory tests, as well as completed studies
of production profiles on wells treated with SandWedge and
Expedite agents, have confirmed that the invasion of formation
materials into the proppant pack, complete with the loss of effective
fracture width, are the two leading causes of production declines
following propped stimulation treatments. The same findings show
that Halliburtons SandWedge enhancer can help eliminate or
significantly reduce such counterproductive forces when applied
as part of a comprehensive conductivity endurance program.

Maximizing Production Throughput

from the Sandface to the Surface
The standard sand control practice of running sand screens in
horizontal openhole sections, both with and without gravel packing,
may result in borehole collapse. This, in turn, causes the screen to
plug. In addition, due to the limited internal diameters of the
screens, drawdown frequently occurs along the horizontal section,
blocking production from the toe of the completion. Halliburtons
PoroFlex expandable screen completions maximize the internal
diameter to minimize drawdown and increase both production and
recoverable reserves. The larger inside diameter (ID) allows for
increased options of production control, zonal isolation and well
stimulation. No gravel pack pumping is required for the completion,
thus reducing the cost and time to complete. In addition,
Halliburtons annular barrier tools work with PoroFlex expandable
screen systems to deliver reliable zonal isolation. The annular
barrier tools complement the installation of SmartWell
technology since zonal isolation and shutoff are a prime
requirement of mature fields.
Halliburtons Reservoir Performance Monitoring (RPM) offers
design, installation and analysis, data management and consulting
services for a wide range of permanent monitoring applications,
such as wellbore performance, flow assurance, reservoir-wellbore
connection, reservoir performance and real time treatment
monitoring.Accurate and continuous downhole monitoring of
pressure and temperature in producing reservoirs can yield major
economic benefits. RPM can be added to a well after it has
produced many years. Reservoir Performance Monitoring systems
include fiber optic distributed temperature monitoring system
(OptoLog DTS), permanent pressure monitoring (EZ-Gauge)
and an electronic permanent pressure/temperature monitoring
system (Symphony).
Analysis software includes monitoring and analysis of completion
integrity utilizing the industry-recognized WELLCAT software
(iWatch), data visualization (iView), and analysis for
quantification of flowing and injection profiles (iFlow).
Halliburton has the industrys greatest installation experience

with fiber optics and capillary tubing monitoring systems.

Fiber optic and vent screen completions (discussed later in
this brochure) are all technologies that can be applied in fields
where subsidence is an issue.

Mature Low-Pressure Reservoirs Require

Specialized Reservoir Characterization,
Drilling and Completions
Halliburtons Underbalanced Applications (UBA) technology
continually monitors injection and flow rates, as well as other
reservoir information normally ignored during underbalanced
drilling. Using Darcys flow equations and advanced computer
modeling, Halliburton develops a productivity index log and
permeability log as the formation is drilled. This unique testingwhile-drilling approach yields important reservoir information that,
in many cases, changes the reservoir knowledge in a field. Unique
components of Halliburton UBA technologies include:
Halliburtons Quick-Trip downhole isolation valve that
provides a mechanical means of isolating the lower section
of a drilled open hole from the cased hole above. It makes
underbalanced operations easier and safer, and reduces
operating costs by isolating reservoirs during tripping or
completion/workover operations.
Halliburtons high-capacity, four-phase, closed-loop
separation equipment which can operate in corrosive
hydrogen sulfide environments and is industry certified.
With their small footprints, these separators are ideal for
offshore operations.
State-of-the-art INSITE data acquisition platform and Surface
Computerized Acquisition Network (SCAN) systems that
deliver critical information for assessing reservoir potential
and performance for maintaining an underbalanced
environment while drilling.

Drilling in mature fields often means penetrating depleted zones,

thereby increasing the risk and expense of lost circulation.
Sperry-Suns pressure-while-drilling (PWD) services, coupled
with Baroids drilling fluids graphics (DFG) hydraulics modeling
software, provide powerful and cost-effective ways to reduce these
risks and expenses.

Halliburton provides world-class rigless well intervention services

that are cost-effective when compared to drilling rigs and workovers.
With its coiled tubing, hydraulic workover, electric wireline and
slickline capabilities, Halliburton can provide such services as electric logs, drilling, perforating tubing or casing, pumping and stimulation, sand control completions, well control, snubbing,
recompletion, abandonment and well evaluation. Halliburton
is the leading provider of rigless interventions, including live
well interventions that maintain or increase well productivity
in mature assets.

Reducing Unwanted Water/Gas Handling

Mature assets demand cost-effective solutions that increase
efficiency. Predicting water influx problems, selecting candidate
wells for water control treatments and justifying expenditures are
critical to developing improved reservoir management strategies.
Optimum reservoir management strategies begin with an
understanding of fluid flow behavior in the reservoir under both
production and injection conditions.
According to industry estimates, the average worldwide water cut is
75 percent, and the percentage continues to rise. In mature fields, the
industrys operating expense ranges from 75 cents to three dollars
per barrel of produced water, making water management an
expensive necessity. Halliburton offers a complete range of
economical, customized solutions including our conformance
optimization stimulation diagnostic QuikLook servicewhich
allows the economic outcome of a water management treatment

Reducing Intervention Time and Costs

One example of Halliburtons capabilities to improve sustainability

and field economics is rigless sand control.A cost-effective system
that delivers multiple, high-rate sand control completions in
reservoirs with several stacked pays, the VentPac AFSM service is a
recent innovation in coiled tubing and sand control technologies
with a wireless depth-correlation device. Our SandWedge enhancer,
Expedite agent, and other proprietary surface modification agents
for coating pack material have enabled economic rigless, throughtubing installations of vent-screen completions on new wells.
These technologies can be designed to allow the operator to retain
through-tubing access, enabling future recompletions or workovers
to be delivered without rig intervention. Rigless, through-tubing,
vent-screen completions have been shown to significantly improve
production rates and completion efficiency, reduce mechanical risk
and completion costs, and extend the economic lives of multi-pay
wells in the Gulf of Mexico. Incremental savings can accrue each
time a well is recompleted via wireline or CT.
