EXAMINATION OF MOISTURE CONTENT OF FINE AGGREGATE

I. Objective
This experimental work is intended to determine the total number of material in aggregate
passing through sieve No. 200 with washing process.

III. Apparatus
1. Sieve No. 16 and No. 200.
2. Large capacity of water bath container, so during the manual shacking process, water will
not spill out of it.
3. Oven with temperature adjustment to heat up the specimen up to (110 5) C of
temperature.
4. Scale/balance with 0,1% of sample weight accuracy.
5. Large capacity of tray to dry the specimen.

The aggregate is put in the oven for 24 hours

Pour the aggregate and water into a set of Sieve of No. 16 and No. 200 and shake gently.
Keep pouring water until the washing water is cleared.
Put back all the retained materials in Sieve No. 16 and No. 200 to the container; place the

specimen onto a tray which is already measured.

5. The fine aggregate is then dried using an oven for 24 hours.
6. After that, the weight of the dried specimen is measured.
V. Observation and Data Calculation

Total weight of fine aggregate = 500 gram s(w1)

Weight of container = 150 grams (w2)
Weight of dried fine aggregate and container = 613 grams (w3)
Weight of dried fine aggregate (w4) = (w3 w2) = 613 150 = 463 grams

VI. Experimental Analysis

i. Analysis of Experiment
The examination of fine aggregate is done to find the percentage of fine aggregate that
passed Sieve No. 200. The method used in this examination is filtering and washing. The
aggregate is filtered through Sieve No. 200. The fine aggregate for this examination is
obtained from a pile of mixed aggregate that is located outside the laboratory. The day
before the examination, the fine aggregate is placed in the container to be put in the oven
for 24 hours. After 24 hours, 500 grams of fine aggregate is taken from the container to
be filtered. Then, a set of Sieve of No. 16 and No. 200 is prepared. The fine aggregate is
poured into the set of sieve. Water is also poured into the sieve to help the fine aggregate
to pass through the set of sieve. To further help the process of filtering, hands are also
used to create motion and force the water to pass through the sieve. The method of
shaking the set of sieve gently is also used to aid the filtering process. The water is
poured through the sieve until the color of the water is clear again. After that, all the
materials that are retained in the set of sieve is placed in a new container whose weight is
already measured. In this examination, the weight of the container is 150 grams. The
container containing the retained material is then put in the oven to be dried for 24 hours.
At the end of 24 hours, the weight of the dried fine aggregate is measured. Based on the
data collected, the weight that is measured is 613 grams including the weight of the
container. So the pure weight of the dried fine aggregate is calculated by subtracting the
weight of dried fine aggregate and container (613 grams) by the weight of the container
(150 grams). According to the calculation, the weight of the dried fine aggregate is 463
grams. At this point, all the data that is needed to calculate the percent of material that
passed Sieve No. 200 is collected.

ii. Result Analysis

To find the percentage of material that passed Sieve No. 200, the weight of dried fine
aggregate is divided by the weight of the initial fine aggregate before the sieve and then
the result is multiplied by 100 percent. Based on this experiment, the weight of dried fine
aggregate is 463 grams and the weight of initial fine aggregate is 500 grams. By
substituting these numbers into the equation, the result that is obtained is 7.4 %.
iii. Error Analysis
1. Students can cause an error while pouring the water to filter the aggregate through the
sieve. The water that is not carefully poured can hit some of the fine aggregate out of
the sieve and fall on the ground and will become useless in the examination.
2. When students use their hands to shake and mix the aggregate to pass through the
sieve, some of it may stick on their hands and be washed out. This also will cause a
loss in aggregate.
VII. Conclusion
According to this examination and based on the data collected, 7.4% of 500 grams of
aggregates passed through Sieve No. 200.
