The Philippines is the last country in Asia and one of only three countries
worldwide (the other two being Angola and Djibouti) with a 10-year pre-university
cycle.

Australian system geared towards preparation for college including thesis

preparation at seventh grade.
4 Seamo Innotech study on K-12
Our classes too overcrowded, too much time, more technical
We need a national level examinations
We have 3 hours of preschool while others have 4 hours, kindergarten now
mandatory
Civic education push for active participation in history, not just past history
5
Australia lends a helping hand
1.77 million kindergarten students, 13.26 million elementary students, and 5.64 million high school
students.

According to the World Bank, the Philippines spends $138 (P6,650) per student per year compared to $853
(P41,110) in Thailand, $1,800 (P86,751) in Singapore and $5,000 (P240,975) in Japan.
Our media are always glamorizing and publicizing people in entertainment, cinema, artista . So in the peoples
value system, they are the most important people. Educators, scientists and researchers are nowhere to be found in
the newspapers, compared to celebrities, Abueva said.
The peoples value system goes over into politicscelebrity, popularity, personality, name recall, winnability.
They dont talk about politics, ideas and institutional changes. People with quality, like Jun Magsaysay, wala
(nothing), compared to Chiz Escudero and Heart Evangelista, he said of the May 13 senatorial elections.

We dont spend enough for our students

7
Evidence show in California, put enough money quality increases cut it quality falls
down
8
Philippines not ready logistically
Lack of kindergarten teachers
P3000 per shift for kinder students
Deped has cap in hiring teachers forcing them to hire contractual teachers
9
1) Lack of budget
2) K-12 gives semi-skilled labourers, more chance for other countries to exploit,
lower salaries (govt should cap this?)
This is an ongoing process, problems will be tackled as we move along
10
Quality still depends on school, not the system alone
Cutting budget per student decreases salary

Are we mimicking the downfall of US? Factory type learning vs love of learning
when measure becomes the goal, it ceases to be an effective measure
12
We are lagging in working or studying abroad hence it is needed
13
Top school include finland

Finnish schools have no tardy bells and students do not get in any trouble if they fall
sleep during class!!!
They instil a love of learning

(however gdp of finland is close to ours despite only having 5% of our population)
China and India is more specialization oriented
Singapore is only 5
14
Germanys more practical approach, vocational training supported by companies. Not
just the OJT in some universities where training is clerical
It doesn't have enough skilled workers to meet the demands of its economy. Almost onethird of German companies could not fill open jobs in 2011
15
Finland spends more on teachers than nationalized teaching

In the US, students spend equal amounts of time on outdated material as relevant
material. The textbooks also invest chapters on material students wont necessarily be
able to apply. The curriculum may be in need of an overhaul.
