Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring

By: Mark Christopher Roi P. Montemayor

You have some spare money (perhaps from your excess allowance or monthly salary) and
wondering where (literally) to spend them for.

You wish not on a mall-hopping again – but where else? It’s now your ticket to unwind from the
gray atmosphere of the city to feel the enchanting nature away!

Feel nature while delving into Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring in the humble province of
Marinduque – and come out of the water muttering out “I’m healed”.

Unlike the many resorts you’ve been visited in Pansol, Laguna, or the surfing experience in
Camarines Sur, nothing is more amazing than experiencing the healing power of nature – one
thing why you should add Malbog Sulfuric Hot Spring on your travel checklist.

First things first on your checklist – MAP (slash) GPRS!

From Manila, it’s a six-hour land-sea travel to Marinduque. In other words, 1 hour before – take
in your Bonamin already just to be sure. Anyway, to minus the hassle, you can get here by plane
if you taught you can’t handle the waves.
Once you’ve landed, it would take another hour and a half to get to the destination – Malbog
Sulfuric Hot Spring. Sitio Malbog is situated in the town of Buenavista, one of the six
constituting localities in the province. It is at the foot of Mt. Malindig which gives the hot
sulfuric water to the spring. In fact, this hot spring is not man-made but was carved in by
Mother Nature’s own hands.

A miracle?
According to the native locals of the district, Mt. Malindig was once an active volcano and has
erupted causing the sulfuric hot spring to well. It is very identifiable even when you are
kilometers away from it’s vicinity that you are on the right route – the smell would lead you the
way. You would easily notice once you get here that the water smells like hard-boiled egg. You
can even boil egg on the hot water though. But forget first the stink and try to jump in!
(1…2…3…Jump!)

Bring your fishing rod another time

Underwater, you may see bubbles rising up the surface. Wait! Don’t mistake for fishes. No fish
lives here so nevermind bringing your fishing kit. The bubbles come from beneath, sprouting
from the tiny spaces between rocks. However, if you are worrying of the water level; it is
enough not to drown you. The swimming areas are varied in dept: one is for kids and the other
for adults. Many foreign tourists and visitors come and go here (and come back again and
again) for two things – to spend vacation and to get some water.

What’s with the water – you ask?

The water springing here is proven therapeutic and can cure dysentery. It will wash your itch
away if your problem is your skin ailment. Seeing slimy green mosses is natural, but believe it of
not the water is tested effective in relieving diarrhea, of course, by drinking the water. The
research was conducted in the early 1900s back when the American troops were there. It could
be somehow violating to gulp the sulfuric water knowing that many people had already dipped
into it – but who knows, the miracle might work on you too, like what it did for me?
Still undecided? You shouldn’t be! =)
