Dumaguete City: A getaway to Negros Oriental’s Tourist Destinations

Located in the heart of the province of Negros Oriental is Dumaguete City, famously known
as the “the place of gentle people”. Dumaguete was derived from the Cebuano word “Dagit”,
meaning “to snatch” because of its frequent raids from pirates. This historically, culturally,
and naturally rich city was recognized in 2014 by Forbes Magazine as the fifth best place to
retire in the world. In 2019, the Department of tourism named the city as the best place to
retire in the country. This continuously growing city never fizzles out its laid-back lifestyle
gaining the attention of local travelers and international tourists. So, what makes this vibrant
city so appealing to travelers?
This city is home and getaway to tourist spots and activities like scuba-diving, swimming
with sea turtles, trekking, visiting the longest sandbars in the country and majestic falls.
Backpackers on a budget who are looking for destinations packed with attractions and great
experiences should make a stop in Dumaguete City, which is highly accessible to nearby
regions like Bacolod, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor. Visiting the city would be incomplete
without visiting its picturesque tourist attractions.
Here are some of the greatest locations to see during your stay in the City and the Province of
Negros Oriental:
Twin Lakes: Lake Balinsasayao and Lake Danao. If you’re the type of traveler, who wants
some peace while being surrounded by nature, you should add this on your tour. This deep
freshwater lakes tucked away in the mountains of Sibulan is a 30-minute ride from the
Dumaguete City. You can get to enjoy the serenity of the lakes by kayaking or boating while
watching rare species of birds and plants.
Casaroro Falls. A jaw-dropping height of 100 feet, this waterfall is located in the
Municipality of Valencia which is home to other stunning waterfalls such as the Pulangbato
Falls. If you’re up for an adventure to visit the waterfall, be ready to take over 350 steps
going down a rugged terrain but it will all be worth when you finally see the magnificent
waterfall. It is also known as one of the most photographed tourist spots in the province due
to its narrow cascade.
Manjuyod White Sandbar. Known for its captivating floating cottages in the middle to the
ocean, it is dubbed as the “Maldives of the Philippines”. This budget-friendly and accessible
sandbar is just an hour and 30 minutes away from the City of Dumaguete. Indulging yourself
with the picture-perfect scenery and feeling the fine granules of white sand, there’s nothing
more to do but to relax and swim. Taking a combo trip along Bais Bay is always a nice way
to start the tour going to Manjuyod to see playful and curios dolphins swimming alongside
moving boats.
Apo Island Marine Reserve. With its abundant marine life, this 24-hectare volcanic island is
one of the must-visit spots for scuba divers. Located in the Municipality of Dauin, you'll need
to take a 30-minute boat journey from the port of Zamboanguita. Here, you can swim with
sea turtles and get a sight of them bobbing their heads in shallow waters. You may also
snorkel to see diverse corals, schools of fish, and even volcanic bubbles.
Mount Kanlaon Natural Park. Taking a chance to see an active volcano, climbers take a 3-
day hike full of wildlife, breathtaking views, and hot springs. From Dumaguete City, it takes
a 4–5-hour bus ride to reach Canloan City. Mount Kanlaon is the highest peak in Negros
Oriental and the third most active volcano in the country. If you’re a dare devil, this might be
the most perfect mountain for you to hike.
San Rival Cakes and Pastries. Your trip will not be complete without tasting the flavors of
Dumaguete by visiting its famous pastry house. Having a melt-in-your-mouth quality silvanas
and the famous sans-rival is an experience you should not miss. Bringing these delicacies to
your homes won’t disappoint.
