Pedotti’s
Mark Pedotti, along with his half
brothers Anton and Nove Ciapusci,
immigrated to the United States in
the 1870’s. Settling in Mendocino
County California, they established
a vineyard, bonded winery, tanbark,
and railroad ties operation, raised
cattle and operated a hotel, bar
Mark Pedotti sold his interest in the
winery and hotel to his brothers.
Alex Pedotti, who was
born in 1903 was the patriarch of the
Pedotti family and the oldest son of
Mark and Mathilda Pedotti. As a
young man, Alex worked to establish
and maintain the family vineyard.
Alex, who passed away February
2002, was often seen sitting at his
table at Pedottis in Sutherlin. We
are proud to share with our patrons
some of our family history by serving
the fruit of the vine, Edmeads
Zinfandel, from 100 year old vines
from the Ciapusci Vineyards.
An Italian restaurant was
established at the Sutherlin site in
1991 by Bob and Dory Schirmer. In
February of 1997, Alex’s son Dave,
while looking for donations for his
car club, stopped in to see Dory.
Upon receiving the donation, Dave
asked her if she would be interested
in selling the restaurant ... the rest is
history!

Celebrating Nearly 30 Years and 25,000 Cataract Surgeries

Weston Eye Center:
Vision problems affect mil-
lions of Americans.
For example, an estimated
22 million Americans over the age
of 40 have a cataract and, in the
same age group, 2.3 million people
have glaucoma.
The leading causes of vision
impairment and blindness in the
United States are primarily age-re-
lated eye diseases such as cataracts,
glaucoma, macular degeneration
and diabetic retinopathy.
The good news is much can
be done to correct these condi-
tions and restore vision. That’s
the reason Roseburg’s Jon-Marc
Weston, M.D., entered the
practice of ophthalmology
(medical and surgical eye
care) in the first place. The
continued advances in tech-
nology have made his spe-
cialty even more rewarding
over the years.
Dr. Weston, of Weston Eye
Center on N.W. Kline St. in Rose-
burg, spent 10 years after medical
school and training teaching and
conducting research in Philadel-
phia. But, when he started to raise
a family, he decided it was time to
relocate to a more family-friendly
community.
With the background, skills
and reputation that gave him the
luxury of establishing a practice
virtually anywhere he wanted, Dr.
Weston chose Roseburg, opening
Weston Eye Center in 1991.
“My wife Susan and I
looked at a map of the United
States and were quickly able to
cross off 46 states,” he says. “I
heard of an opportunity in Rose-
burg, and after visiting we fell in
love with the community.”
Dr. Weston quickly began
to put his expertise to work, bring-
ing a university level of innovative
eye care to this small community
for the benefit of people with vision
problems.
“My goal from the begin-
ning was to always strive to make
the latest innovations in eye care
available to our patients,” he says.
Dr. Weston was the first
eye-care surgeon in the Pacific
Northwest to develop a laser vision
correction center and perform
endoscopic eye surgery. He also
introduced to Southern Oregon no-
needle, no-suture cataract surgery
and was the first in Oregon, and is
now the only surgeon in Roseburg,
to perform multi-focal implants.
This procedure enables patients
who have had cataracts removed
to see near, far and everything in
between without glasses.
Today, Dr. Weston remains
the preeminent cataract surgeon in
the region, and will soon perform
the 25,000th cataract surgery of his
career.
He continues to expand his
state-of-the-art center to enhance
the offerings available to his pa-
tients, most of whom are seniors.
Last summer a new phy-
sician, Ronald Slocumb, M.D.,
moved from Michigan to join Dr.
Weston and the center’s other eye
care provider, optometrist Steven
Tronnes, O.D. Soon after, a new
3,000 square-foot expansion project
was completed.
Dr. Weston will move his
research activities into the new
area, which also will soon house
a new program – comprehensive
hearing services.
