To Whom It May Concern:

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Devita Bishundat both inside and outside the
classroom during my tenure at Loyola University Chicago. In these contexts, Devita
demonstrated myriad skills and qualities that will aid in her success within the higher education
field.
Devita has made valuable contributions to each classroom environment we shared. Devitas
critical analysis and thoughtful application of theory to her own practice sparked rich discussions
among our peers. In sharing her previous professional experiences and lived experiences, she
encouraged others to examine theories and contemporary higher education issues with new
perspectives. Devita troubled and challenged readings and dialogues respectfully and
productively to create rich learning environments. She doesnt shy away from uncomfortable
conversations and the vulnerability she displayed helped meand Im sure othersbe brave to
do the same in our classroom spaces. She carried her critical consciousness and conversations
into her work as a Graduate Assistant to deepen the understanding and practices of social justice
at Loyola University Chicago.
As a Graduate Assistant in the Student Diversity & Multicultural Affairs office, she created
opportunities for students to engage with social justice issues. She brought theories learned in
courses into her work with LUCES and as a facilitator at The Peoples Institute. I was privileged
to attend in the first year as a participant in Devitas small group. In this role she displayed her
ability to challenge and support the group through difficult conversations about identity, power,
privilege and oppression. In the second year she continued to serve as a role model for
undergraduates in the way she engaged with students one-on-one and in large group spaces. I
admire the congruent life she lives, weaving her commitment to social justice through all aspects
of her life whether through her posts to social media, participation in demonstrations that address
racial injustices or in her efforts to build community through affinity spaces among members of
the Loyola community.
A year ago Devita was elected as President of the Higher Education Student Association (HESA)
and I have had the honor of serving with her on the board. Devitas vision and reflective
leadership has guided the entire board to build community and serve the program in meaningful
ways. Her directness, organization and follow through have kept a large board to remain
cohesive and collaboratively accomplish the organizational goals we established. This was not
an easy task as the program faced an unforeseen hiring freeze that brought new responsibilities to
serve the program as a board and community. Devita creates an inclusive environment and takes
a team approach in leadership by seeking multiple perspectives and encouraging everyone to
take ownership in advocating for and promoting HESA.
Collaboration and building relationships are some of Devitas greatest strengthsand ones that I
strive to model in my own professional practice. She has bridged connections within our
program, across Loyola and throughout the Chicagoland higher education network. She
promotes and encourages collaboration in a way that encourages authentic connections to

individuals. This has been done in her conversations and contributions working with the
Division of Student Development to support current and future Graduate Assistants and all
students within the Higher Education program. Her commitment to honest and constructive
feedback demonstrates how she will leverage her agency to create positive change for the benefit
of a broader community.
It is with great enthusiasm that I submit my letter of recommendation for Devita Bishundat as
she completes Loyola University Chicagos Higher Education program. Her passion,
commitment to social justice and leadership will be a tremendous asset to the higher education
field. As a dedicated change agent, she will work to transform institutions and spaces in a way
that promotes justice, equity and humanity. I am excited to see the great things she will continue
to contribute to the field in service for and with others.
Sincerely,

Karen Berg
