a Note
from the E ditors
It seems that for a while students of SFU Surrey had tried to start up student publications in the past but
for some reason or another they never lasted. I feared the same fate would befall this publication last
fall, just as hiaspire was gaining some steam and advertisers were latching on. Prospects became even
more dismal as the previous chief editor handed her position down to me, and I was left to pick up the
pieces of hiaspire when the majority of the past contributors had moved on. However, with the help of
Christi Dos Santos we have managed to cobble together a dedicated and talented new production team,
and we are looking to shift the focus of hiaspire on a different tangent from before. The emphasis on
community from all corners of SFU Surrey is the most important aspect of hiaspire2.0. We aim to have
contributors and content from all the various departments and organizations based in Surrey, as the

design, we are aware that the past focus on experimental typography was a thing that was either

readability for those who were in the know about design, and was intimidating and irritating for those
who were not. With the new direction of hiaspire, even though we are aiming for more universality in
terms of how it looks, we will still try to incorporate the fundamental elements of graphic design, and
put our own spin on the accepted conventions of magazine design in order to create something that is
readable, creative, and contemporary.

I would also like to thank the past members for all their help in establishing hiaspire’s presence in SFU
Surrey: Queenie Chou, Charles Chou, Liesl Jurock (our liaison to everything!), Tanya Lisle, the original
design team (Greg Polvi, Adam Drake, Ryan Murray, Paula Solanoy), the next design team (Helen Chan,
Anna Wu), Eric Bankes, Jane Si, Brian “Q” Malkinson, Rob Mackenzie, Alex Cotoranu, Dustin
Dunsmuir, Gordo Brown, Brad Slavin, Titus Gregory, Nate Powell…and a lot more who contributed to
our legacy in Surrey. Thank you and hope you guys will do great things in your academic and
community. And so we did, and we hope you like the changes and this issue’s

professional careers.

On an oddly warm late October afternoon, I walked
up to the Surrey Business Faculty’s new student lounge
on the fifth floor for an interview with the VP and Co-

Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship, here’s a
brief history: ACE, founded in 1987, is a national,
not-for-profit organization geared towards foster-

includes implementing a positive change in the
community through educational outreach and
entrepreneurial initiatives. Furthermore, it fea-

Mo PERSEPOLIS
By Anna Koniarska
Witty, heart warming as well as heart breaking, learning about
history never could be as interesting as it is in this film. Un-
like most films of its nature, a “cartoon” Persepolis is not for
young children. It is based on the Graphic memoirs of Marjane
Satrapi’s experiences growing up during the Islamic revolution
in Iran and spoken mostly in French. The film easily captures the
innocence and quirkiness of infancy as well as adulthood, while
still relaying the history of a country that in today’s media can be
misunderstood. Presented in simple black and white line draw-
ings, her story begins when she is a young, care-free, outspoken
child who dreams of becoming “the last prophet”.Then conflict

only amplifies the emotion of the Rape of Nanking. Beginning
in a small studio, the documentary commences with the events
leading up to the Japanese invasion of China in 1931 and pro-
ceeds through the bloody years concluding with the ruin of
Nanking and thousands of lives.

Using actual footage from the invasion and ensuing war, both
from news reels and videos taken by the survivors themselves,
the actors tell a ghastly story which is unfortunately all too true.
The film chronicles the Japanese policy of “Kill all, burn all, loot
all”, yet its true horror lies in the fact that despite all the atrocities
which were committed, many people do not acknowledge them,
and worse yet, many people claim them to be false. Of inter-
est to more than historians, the film highlights the formation of
the International Safety Zone and the ignorance of the world to
crimes which, years later, can still only be described as mali-
cious, ferocious, and inhumane. Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman
paint a vivid picture of one of the worst periods of modern his-
tory without showing any one party as evil.

While it was the Japanese who committed such crimes, it was

the Germans, Russians, British, and Americans who in doing
nothing were just as guilty. This film spoke volumes, and did so
diplomatically, powerfully, and violently, the only ways in which
such an atrocity can be viewed.

With our first session of work completed in our new research space on the fifth floor, it looks like the Voicing the
Mosaic project for Explorations 320 is finally starting to come together. Weeks of planning have culminated in the creation of
a small model, roughly one foot in diameter, that over the next three weeks we will be amplifying into reality.

A couple months ago I received an email from Sasha Colby, one of my Explorations professors from last year. In it
she explained that she had applied (and been approved) for a grant to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research
Council for a project officially titled Voicing the Mosaic: Official Bilingualism in the Multicultural Context. I can tell you with full
honesty that up until recently, it was still very unclear to us as to how we would present this. In our search to define
multiculturalism we first employed the use of interview videos, attempting to glean some meaning of the word which we
could use for an installation piece. While these interview videos offered many insights into the current societal perspective of
multiculturalism, they still lacked enough variety to allow us to truly capture the word’s meaning. We then went to a first year
Explorations course, and gave them their first sample of university writing. With 103 responses to the question of “what does
multiculturalism mean to you”, 4 interview videos, and 13 of us to analyze and synthesize the responses, we were ready.

The class itself has no final exam, no papers to write; instead we have work on a much larger scale. We are in the
process of creating the first piece of installation to reside semi-permanently within the SFU Surrey campus, and upon this
piece of installation art we will also perform a play composed of short scenes and monologues through which we hope to
express our understanding of bilingualism in the multicultural context. While we assumed at first that bilingualism would be
easy to define, it has shown to be troublesome as well. Many people in the lower mainland are bilingual, but the majority of
them hardly fit the English/French category. Instead we found that bilingualism acts as a direct embodiment of multicultural-
ism. We could not find any set combination of languages spoke by any set group of people.
