Plastic surgery

More than 23 million cosmetic and non-surgical procedures

were performed in 2013, according to the International
Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS). The United
States topped the international chart, with almost 4 million
people going under the knife or needle, followed by Brazil
with more than 2 million procedures. Britain did not feature
in the top 10 but was ranked 14 in the world by the number
of plastic surgeons, with an estimated 865 in business. Botox
is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world. The
toxin, which can be lethal, is injected to paralyses facial
muscles to slow down the ageing process. Other popular
non-surgical treatments included fillers, laser hair removal
and chemical peels.

Women were by far the biggest consumers in the cosmetic surgery

market, making up almost 90 per cent of all procedures in the
world more than 20 million. Men underwent more than 3 million
procedures, mostly rhinoplasty, breast reduction and eyelid surgery.
Penis enlargements were most popular in Germany, where almost
3,000 men had the operation, followed be Venezuela, Spain and
Mexico. According to BAAPS, boob jobs, eyelid surgery and
facelifts are most popular among women in the UK, while men
prefer nose and eyelid surgery, as well as breast reductions.

Plastic surgery is not just for the rich and famous, although it seems
more and more if you are rich. But the practice of altering ones
appearance is only one aspect of plastic surgery. Plastic does not

its origins. The Greek plastikos means to form or to mold. Plastic

surgery can be reconstructive and cosmetic; theres a bit of overlap,
as some reconstructive surgeries can be considered cosmetic and
vice versa. Cosmetic surgery is used as a cosmetic tool while plastic
surgery reconstructs medical issues.
Accidents can leave people scarred or deformed and sometimes both
reconstructive and cosmetic surgery is necessary. Birth defects and
birthmarks can cause severe physical and emotional handicaps.
Reconstructive surgery corrects birth defects and restores normal
functioning and appearance.
One area of controversy surrounding plastic surgery is an increased
use among teens. Some want birthmarks removed; others hate their
noses and others are severely scarred from acne. Breast
augmentation is usually not allowed until a woman is over 18, and
procedures such as nose jobs need to wait until the person has
stopped growing (late teens). Doctors screen teens to be sure the
teen is mature and responsible enough to undergo the surgery and
that theyre doing it for the right reasons. Why I did it surveys vary
by demographic. The main reasons are: Turn back the hands of time;
Look like a beauty, not a beast; Look smokin hot; Erase mistakes; Get
rid of too much me; Make more of me in the right places; To make
my partner happy; To fix whats broken; To make sex better; To be
happy with my looks.
In my opinion plastic surgery makes us not to be who we are and
changes things that sometimes are not necessary. Having plastic
surgery is not always as bad as we think. Sometimes, psychological
problems are solved and people s happier. However, it can transform
into an addiction and can make you to do crazy things such as
changing your face to look like a cat. Concluding, if you are happy
after your surgery and you are not addicted to it, its fine.
