B Motivation
Before we start our lesson, I prepared a
game for our energizer Are you
familiar with Word Hunt class?
Very good, Instead of calling it Word
Hunt, I called it Idiom Hunt Are
you excited about it?
All you have to do is to form a group
(Group A and Group B), after you form
your own group you have to collect
Idioms that I scattered around this
class. I may hide it under your chair,
on my desk, electric fan, or wherever
do you think I hide it. And after
collecting it, you have to define or give
meaning to each idiom. I will give you
5 minutes to finish the task... Are you
ready?
So lets begin in Three
two...one...go...

C Vocabularies
Before moving on to our topic, let us
first unlock the difficult words that are present
in the selection.

Idioms - a group of words established by

usage as having a meaning not deducible from
those of the individual words (e.g., rain cats
and dogs, see the light ).
Expression - the process of making known
one's thoughts or feelings.

D Discussion

Yes, Maam

Yes, Maam

Yes, Maam

Class, I have a question..

What is it Maam?

Should you believe in everything you read or

hear?
Its raining cats and dogs
Do you believe that?
People say it, it has been written in books!!
Are they lying?
Do they mean it literally?
No, they are making a point, exaggerating the
point by the use of Idioms.
So what is Idioms? Does Anyone of you know
the meaning of Idioms?
An Idiom is a group of words established by
usage as having a meaning not deducible from
those of the individual words.

Thats correct. An idiom is a phrase that means

more than their words put together. If you take
them word for word, they might not make any
sense.
For Example. Do you like my backpack? It
cost an arm and leg.
Does it mean that if you like a bag and you
want to buy it you have first cut and give your
arm and leg?

No Maam, thats weird and creepy.

True, Because An arm and leg is just an

Idiomatic Expression. This doesnt mean you
have give your body parts before you can buy a
bag An arm and leg means A large amount
of money.
Another example is There is a big test
tomorrow; I need to hit the books.
Does that mean you have to literally hit the
book?

No, Maam

Hit the book means to study hard. Do you get it

class?
Yes, Maam

Another example is Ms. Merendino is absent

today, because she is under the weather.
Does that mean Miss Merendino is literally
under the weather? No. That means she is sick.
Miss Merendino is absent because she is sick.

Do you understand it class?

Do you have any question?

E Generalization

Idioms make a language sound very

creative, and can also get others to think
and figure out what the person who is
using the idiom might mean.
Using the Literal language (as in saying
things directly without any creativity)
sounds very common, and it seems a bit
boring when they are used in story
books. People appreciate creativity, and
using idioms in your writing and help you
with your language skills, and also help
you understand the meaning when
someone else uses them in their speech.
