his inclination to work with relatively brief phrases that are given time to resonate, so that the
resonances provide the connective tissue for the composition as a whole.

3. March 28, 7 PM, YBCA Forum: This will be a performance by the five-member Tord
Gustavsen Ensemble, which will be preceded by a pre-concert talk with Gustavsen. Gustavsen Today

4. April 1, 7 PM, Roxie Cinema: This will be a screening of the film Sounds and Silence, a
documentary that profiles Eicher's accomplishments and illustrates his differing approaches to
working with ECM artists. Unfortunately, none of the artists presented in the film will be Oklahoma City Thunder

covering rehearsals of his music by the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and conductor Tõnu

5. April 11, 2 PM, Gould Theatre, Legion of Honor: This will be a performance by the 67-year-
old Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and his quintet. The other members are pianist Alexi
Tuomarila, guitarist Jakob Bro, bassist Anders Christensen, and drummer Olavi Louhivuori.
ECM will release the quintet's CD Dark Eyes on March 30. If Gustavsen's release was inspired

by Auden, Stanko's title comes from the track "The Dark Eyes of Martha Hirsch," inspired by
the painting by Oskar Kokoschka, "Martha Hirsch (Dreaming Woman)." That is the longest City Box Office
track on the disc and is a fascinating experiment in the interpretation of an abstract

6. April 25, 7 PM, Palace of Fine Arts Theatre: The final event in the series will be a
performance by tenor saxophone and flutist Charles Lloyd and his "New Quartet," consisting of San Francisco Conservatory of Music
pianist Jason Moran, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland. This is the same San Francisco Opera
ensemble that recorded Rabo de Nube for ECM in 2008. Lloyd is very much the "grand old

someone of his stature and experience working with the next generation of jazz performers. San Francisco Symphony
