CSA threatens Human Rights Office?

SHAC proposed to
improve student
advocacy; some are
skeptical

When the University of Guelph
Central Student Association
executives (CSA) presented a
proposal for the new Student Help
and Advocacy Centre (SHAC) at a
Jan. 27 CSA board meeting, some
people immediately saw something
amiss.
The proposed centre is the
brainchild of Nathan Lachowsky,
the CSA’s academic commissioner,
as well as Momina Mir, the
external commissioner, and suggests
combining the Human Rights Office
(HRO), Financial Resource Room
(FRR) and the Legal Resource
Room (LRR).
While the CSA said that some
students are celebrating the idea as
progressive, other students took issue
with what they saw as essentially
the elimination of the HRO, seven
student jobs reduced into four and
the lack of adequate consultation
when drafting the proposal.
Lachowsky explained that the
idea for SHAC came out of a desire
to make advocacy for students more
efficient and co-coordinated.
“The real place that this is
coming from is increasing the
quality of advocacy services available
to students and right now we have it
spread in between multiple service
offices, we have it in multiple physical
locations and multiple executive
offices,” said Lachowsky. “[Right
now] we have poor coordination,
poor communication and poor filing
between all of [the offices].”
Lachowsky said the big
advantages he sees is a partnership
between the SHAC and the Legal
Aid Clinic of Guelph, which will
allow students to get free legal advice
through the centre, an increased
quality of output, and a coordination
of training for the center’s staff and
volunteers. As far as Lachowsky and
Mir are concerned, the benefits out
way the costs.
“It’s unfortunate that there’s a
very small minority of people that
had a very negative attitude because
it’s initially shutting down things,”
said Lachowsky. “We’re not taking
dollars away, we’re not trying to shut
anything down…so for the people
who have a negative attitude right
now, my question is ‘what is negative
about this?’ Is it the fact that we’re
changing the name from HRO to
SHAC?’”
For Dave Hudson, a former
CSA HRO office coordinator, his
issue with the SHAC proposal does
not come from the aforementioned
name change.
“In the current proposal, despite
the way in which it assures that
human rights will not be lost and that
a focus on anti-oppression will not be
lost, it seems to be quite lacking in a
specific focus on human rights,” said
Hudson. “Human rights work, at a
student level, already always stands
a risk of being marginalized…not
everybody thinks it’s important.”
While Hudson is pleased that
the CSA executives are discussing
and exploring different ways of
viewing student advocacy, he feels
that SHAC might jeopardize the
focus that needs to be placed on the
three very different offices, especially
the HRO.
“It seems to be very diluted and
to bring everything under the banner
of a general help and advocacy centre,
it loses the larger context of human
rights,” said Hudson. “Even though
those things are already intertwined
with other issues, it still requires
someone to have the kind of nuance
of understanding all three areas,
rather than being able to dedicate
their time to [one].”
The official proposal discusses
having consulted numerous people in
the initial stages but cites “unforeseen
human resource complications”
when explaining the lack of feedback
they were able to get from the HRO.
Molly McManus, the current HRO
events coordinator, acknowledges
the complications but doesn’t see
how they could have interfered
with anyone from the HRO being
consulted on this proposal.
“They did not consult with the
Human Rights Office, they also did
not consult with anyone that used
to work in this office and they did
not consult with any former external
commissioner who used to supervise
this office,” said McManus. “There

Predicting problems

psychics butt heads

Intelligent, open-minded,
logical and willing to try new
things. These were the qualities my
electric psychic reading claimed I
was seeking in my potential mate.
While true, this begs the question:
who isn’t seeking these qualities in
a potential mate?
The Psychic Expo made its 22nd
trip into Guelph this weekend,
setting up shop at the Best Western
Inn for three days. Bringing in
paranormal practitioners from
England, Scotland, Ireland and
Russia, the Psychic Expo offered
demonstrations and readings from
a range of disciplines just as diverse
as the countries of origin, including
tarot card readings, palm readings,
and channeling spirits.
“This is a psychic expo,”
organizer Linda Fulcher said.
“These are people who have
intuitive sixth sense paranormal
abilities.”
While she has had psychic
flashes, Fulcher admits her
experiences with the paranormal
are not substantial enough to
merit performing readings. Her
skills being “administrative,”
Fulcher instead organizes these
psychic expos, something that
has been a passion and interest of
hers for years. This preference for
paperwork does not stop Fulcher
from administering readings;
Fulcher merely outsources people’s
astrological information to a
professional astrologer online for
one of the aforementioned electric
psychic readings.
Although entrance to the
expo costs only $8, every reading
was priced at upwards of thirty
dollars—except for Fulcher’s
electric psychic, which cost only
ten.
This being within my budget, I
gave Fulcher my information and
10 minutes later my future was
predicted.

stereotype that people who identify
with a marginalized group require a
leg-up [in the] employment world…
as a student who identifies in one of
these groups, I find such a system
offensive.”

Of course, astrology was not
the only form of prediction being
practiced at the expo. While almost
all psychics, mediums and readers
declined to comment on their work,
most attendees were more willing
to share their experiences. Having
received free passes to the event,

than many other people at the
expo. However, while both left still
not entirely convinced, they were at
least now questioning a bit more.

“[The CSA] is taking away part
of affirmative action, which at first
I thought was okay until I realized
that no research [seemed to have]
been done on it to see whether it
was working or not,” said Bryan. “I

reservations, Schummer, in
particular, felt that he connected
with one psychic.

According to Professor Di
Carlo, however, this is merely an
example of what is called a cold
reading.
“You’re somewhat intuitive,”
said Di Carlo, “and someone comes
in, you see how they’re dressed,
how they behave, you determine
whether they’re distraught and you
paint a psychological profile almost
immediately with a cold reading.”
More advanced (and expensive)
readings almost always require
your name and some factual data
beforehand, which allows the
psychic to research the subject and
perform what is called a warm
reading.
“They’ll just google you,” said
Di Carlo.
For Di Carlo, one of the most

no straight answer which is why I
opposed it.”
Bryan’s concern also stems from
the fact that affirmative action is a
program put in place in Canada by
the government and perhaps should
remain in the CSA’s hiring process.
“[Affirmative action] is a public
system,” said Bryan. “I feel like if
something like this is going to be
changed [and] that our school prides
itself in hiring equally among the races
and diverse groups…do we even have
the right to be taking programs like this
away at a government funded school

hear results in what Di Carlo sees
as fraud. If someone really was
psychic, they could simply predict
lottery numbers or sports games
outcomes and invest their money
in that. Instead, hopeful believers
are charged forty or fifty dollars to
be told that “love is just around the
corner.”
While Lucas, Schummer and
a multitude of expo-goers enjoyed
their time and took away positive
experiences, Di Carlo believes they
are being fleeced.
“When [psychics] say ‘I have
special powers and I can help
you’ they’re lying, they’re being
fraudulent and they are preying on
the vulnerability of individuals who
are coming to them in the hopes
that they can offer them genuine
guidance,” said Di Carlo. “Since
they can do none of those things, I
call them out.”

“If anything, this will encourage
our organization to evaluate the
barriers we have for people who
identify within these groups,” said
Gaber. “Our former practice acted
simply as a smokescreen for what
the real issues are within our hiring
process, our staff environment, and
the CSA as a whole.”

Women-only food sites
open in Haiti
The World Food Program’s
aid workers in Haiti have begun
handing out food coupons that
only women are eligible to redeem.
The move followed reports that
young men were swarming aid
trucks and pushing ahead of
others. Furthermore, studies have
shown that Haitian women tend
to take care of household food
supply. Three weeks after the
tragic Jan. 12 earthquake, food
aid is being distributed at 16 sites

a lecture on the causes, realities,
and impact of human trafficking

Canada files emissions
target with UN
Canada gave its emissions
reduction target to the United
Nations on Saturday Jan. 30,
only one day in advance of the
deadline stipulated by December’s
Copenhagen Accord. As
promised, Environment Minister
Jim Prentice followed the lead
of the United States and set the
target at a 17 per cent reduction
of greenhouse gas emissions
over 2005 levels to be achieved
by 2020. The European Union
made a much larger pledge, to cut
greenhouse gas emissions by 20
per cent compared to 1990 levels
in just a decade.

The 52nd annual Grammy
Awards were dominated by

community radio in
Guelph

After thirty years on the dial as
Guelph’s most alternative media
source, CFRU 93.3FM continues
to churn out the hits.
Except, these aren’t your
traditional Billboard top 100 or Edge
Thursday 30 hits that boom from
the second floor of the University
Centre; CFRU prides itself in being
a medium for alternative listening,
focusing on spoken word and
musical programming that would
otherwise fly under the radar.
On Friday, Jan. 29, CFRU
celebrated its 30th birthday and
actually, while it has been 30
years on the FM dial, campus
and community radio has existed
in Guelph since 1939 when the
Ontario Agricultural College
offered a credit course in radio
broadcasting.
The importance of campus and
community radio to the greater
Guelph region is a concept that
all staff members appreciate and
understand.
“We’re Guelph’s only alternative
media source. We’re a resource for
people to learn media skills and
consider themselves journalists,”said
Sarah Mangle, CFRU’s Community
Outreach Coordinator. “I think
when people are equipped with
that kind of knowledge, it changes
how people are accountable to each
other in their community. It also
means that people can tune in and
feel connected to their community.”

the reputation of the station to the
point where individuals with unique
viewpoints immediately look to
CFRU as a means to express their

“Our (CRTC) licence dictates
that we provide program that you
can’t find anywhere else on the dial,”
said Mangle. “[Our programs] have
to be an alternative to news and

“Legally, that’s what we have to
do and what we have to be here for.
Our mandate has to reflect those
laws. [The station is] for people
whose ideas and bodies aren’t

The longevity of the station
Rashaad Bhamjee
has reached a point where certain
programs have now been featured as
a part of CFRU’s regular schedule
for decades, namely Nicky Dread’s
Crooked Beats and Sound Magic,
both part CFRU’s programming
for over 25 years.
“We’re part of a very rich
history of media programming,”
said Mangle. “I think that a lot of
different people have been involved
over the years and they still [speak]
fondly of their time here.”
“We can really be proud of
our longevity – the fact that we’ve
survived for 30 years,” echoed new
station manager Lloyd Bentley.
“University communities are
extremely transient,” explained
Mangle. “People are here for a
maximum of five or six years, so to
have a show that lasts longer than
that period of time...is extremely
valuable for new students and older
students alike.”
And where will CFRU be in
another 30 years?
“I would hope that all our
material in the archives would
be really easily accessible,” said
Mangle.
“We’ll be very digital, that’s
for sure, and require half the space
that we do right now,” said Bentley.
“We’ll have a massive digital library.
We’re currently in the process of
transporting our older reel-to-reels
over to the University of Guelph
Archives. They’re getting right on
the digitization process.”
Given the long term success of
the station, those archives will also
serve as an outstanding teaching
tool for new programmers as CFRU
continues the tradition of alternative
media in the Royal City.

Marriage: How soon is too soon?
Students are

You’ve probaby dreamed about
the day: roses, wine, a romantic
dinner, perhaps culminating in
some skywriting or an elaborate
scavenger hunt for a certain small,
shiny object.
Whether you plan to get down
on one knee, or plan to be a giggling
bride-to-be, you have probably
imagined how your face will look
on the day you get engaged.
Picture that face now. What
did it look like? Radiant? Happy?
Hopefully, in love? Presumably,
though, it was free of adolescent
blemishes, but not yet wrinkled
with age.
If anything can be concluded
from bridal magazines and
television shows such as “Say Yes
to the Dress” and MTV’s “Sixteen
and Pregnant” the “ideal” time for
marriage is in one’s early twenties
or even before.
Today, many at that age are
full-time students, and they may
very well plan to be for some
time. Despite the emphasis
on exciting (and expensive)
wedding celebrations, when two
university students announce
their engagement, it is still often
met with shock and sometimes
disapproval.
“It’s something I would never do
at this age,” said Kayla McDowell,
a third year U of G student whose
close friends, both undergraduates,
that is incompatible with the role
of student. Therefore, there seems
to be a gulf between the glamorous
images in popular culture of young
people getting and the actual way
people feel about their fellow
students tying the knot in real life.
Many reasons could account
for the discrepancy, including basic
stereotyping.
“Students are a very diverse

“The negativity seems to come
from the fact that people feel they
weren’t consulted,” said Lachowsky.
“If you feel like you have a voice in
providing input into this proposal,
tell us…this is not something we
want to polarize, this should be a
community effort that everyone
is a part of but it’s impossible to
incorporate those perspectives
if people won’t provide them.”
Overall, Lachowsky and Mir feel
that moving to a system for student
advocacy like SHAC is not such
a radical change. In her research,

Conference goes
forward with great
success

Organic food production is an
increasingly popular movement,
and nothing gives more evidence
of this than the 29th annual
Guelph Organic Conference
held at the University of Guelph
this past weekend. Hundreds
of organic agriculturalists,
processors, consumers, farmers
market organizers, journalists,
students and enthusiasts gathered
together to discuss, investigate and
celebrate organic agriculture. New
people were introduced, new ideas
were proposed, and new products
were sampled. All in all, it was a
productive and successful four
days.
The various organic workshops
and panels began in the afternoon
on Thursday Jan. 28. Some of these
workshops were designed for those
new to the movement, such as “A
2010 Climate Change Think Tank:
How can the organic movement
respond to the challenge of climate
breakdown!” and others for the
more advanced such as “Benefits
of Mycorrhizal fungal associations
with plants- a soil insurance plan.”
Talks were held throughout the
weekend, while a formal organic
dinner was hosted Friday night in
Peter Clark Hall.
On Saturday morning, crowds
gathered in Rozanski to listen to
keynote speaker Margaret Webb,
a national organic expert, who has
written extensively about organic
agriculture in Canada and North
America. In her presentation
titled, “Think Big Canada: The
Organic Food Fix,” she spoke
about Canada’s current broken
food system, and the solutions that
organic agriculture can offer.
“Food, essential to life, has
to be recognized as more than a
profit machine,” said Webb. “By
supporting the production of
cheap food, the government has
actually made it more expensive.”
In her lecture, Webb explained
that while the current system of
farming is efficient, it produces
enormous problems later on,
especially those related to health
and the environment. In her
opinion, as well as thousands of
others, the organic movement is
not just about producing better
quality food; it’s about a better
food system completely.
Other problems were discussed
after Webb’s lecture, such as the
inaccessibility of land to young
farmers, the continuing struggle
to have genetically modified foods
labeled, and the misrepresentation
of organics in general.
Despite these problems,
organics have come a long way.
Kathy Boyce of Crofter’s Organics,
a vendor selling organic jams
and juice at the expo, has been
around since the beginning of the
movement. She spoke about the
challenge ‘back then’ to spread
product awareness and convince
consumers to buy her product.
Today, more and more people
consider organic food superior,
and her costumer base has grown
considerably, though she still serves
her loyal buyers from the 1980s.
Holand Bolster remembers
how the conference began 28
years ago “with 12 students, a
bag of sandwiches and some
coffee.” Today the best part for
him is “seeing all these people
from all over, British Columbia,
Newfoundland, the east coast
and even Holland, come together,
having a good time, and getting
involved.”
This sense of community is
evident as people roam around
the UC looking at booths, and
sampling food. Many know each
other yet newcomers are always
welcome.
Whether or not you agree with
the organic movement, it’s not
going anywhere. What Bolster
thinks about the future of the
conference and organics in general
is that “it’s growing, it keeps
growing, and it’s going to save the
world.”
Maybe that’s not such a bad
thing.
“In an organic Canada, you
can still have your chocolate
milkshake, but it will be made with Julia Shonfield
Mapleton’s organic ice cream and Organic enthusiasts, new and old, mill about the stalls at the expo of
fair-trade chocolate,” said Webb. the 29th Annual Guelph Organic Conderance.

Still no CFS referendum date

A referendum on continued
membership in the Canadian
Federation of Students has yet to
be scheduled for the University
of Guelph despite it being over
ninety days since a group of U of
G students submitted a petition
to CFS-National headquarters
requesting a referendum be held on
the issue.
According to CFS-National
bylaws, a referendum date must be
scheduled within ninety days of
receipt of the petition.
Student organizers sent
the petitions to CFS-National
headquarters on Oct. 19, 2009,
collecting 1854 signatures, or 10
per cent of the undergraduate
population, a CFS-National de-
federating requirement.
According to Dave Molenhuis,
CFS-National treasurer, it has
been the CSA’s unwillingness to
help verify names on the petitions
that has slowed down the process.
“I’ve never encountered this
type of situation in my time as
treasurer, where the national
executive has requested the CSA’s
assistance in verifying the names
on the petitions and we have not
received any assistance in that
matter,” said Molenhuis. “We
haven’t encountered this type of
hesitancy in assisting us in the
verification process.”
Molenhuis said that verifying
the signatures on U of G petitions
has been particularly difficult in
relation to petitions sent from
other schools.
“With most student petitions
that have come back, there
has been a very speedy, quick
response in assistance in verifying
names with the registrar. And
the concern by the national
executive was over the number of
names that were duplicates and
illegible, and incomplete names,
student numbers and signatures,”
Molenhuis said. “We as the
national executive must ensure the
names are valid that the student
numbers are valid with the
petitions that we have received. “
The Ontarion was not able
to confirm the exact timeline of
correspondence between the CSA
and the CFS national executive,
but can confirm that that a letter
sent from Brenda Whiteside, the
U of G’s vice-president of student
affairs, included with the petitions,
verified 1,854 signatures of the
roughly 2,000 that were on the
petition.
“In terms of CFS-National,
they are in clear violation of their
bylaws and we will be pursuing
that to represent all the students
that signed that petition,” said
Gavin Armstrong, the CSA’s
communications commissioner.
“We have to review the bylaws
more and look at what our options
more, and we’re doing that…in
my mind [to break their bylaws]
would be a breach of contract and
a breach of the CFS-National
which to me is a tragedy for all the
students who pay the fee.”
Armstrong said that there
is little more the CSA can do
in helping verify the petitions
with out being in violation of
the Student Record Information
Privacy policy. On Wednesday, the
CSA’s counsel advised them that
the letter sent to CFS-National
from the University of Guelph’s
registrar should suffice in this
situation.
But not everyone on the CSA
executive believes enough is being
done by the CSA to help CFS-
National verify signatures.
“I can guarantee one thing, we
have not helped in verification,”
said Momina Mir, the CSA’s
external affairs commissioner.
“That’s one thing I can say, we
have not helped. I’m willing to sit
down with our bus pass list and
verify every signature.”
Despite issues with the
verification process, earlier this
week CFS-National sent a letter
via registered mail to the CSA
asking them to choose their two
members to sit on a Referendum
Oversight Committee, which will
also include two member of the
CFS.
“Even with this issue over the
validation of the petitions, we
have asked them to nominate their
representatives to the oversight
committee even when we are
dealing with this matter,” said
Molenhuis. “So the process is still
moving ahead, even when we are
incapable of receiving assistance
from the CSA.”
Armstrong said it in December
when he had indicated to the CFS-
National that the CSA had chosen
their representatives and were eager
to mover on with the process.
According to Armstrong, if
a referendum is not scheduled
by Feb. 12, 2010, it will be too
late to organize a referendum in
accordance with CFS- National
bylaws.

artists under one roof.
But when word got out that a
Haiti benefit concert was in the
works for Guelph, the response
from the local artistic community
was overwhelming.
“We had to turn away a lot of
people, exceptional artists, because
we have a limited amount of time,”
said Sam Turton, one of the event’s
organizers. “People are so moved.”

of Guelph’s most gifted singers,

sharing a stage to raise funds for

They’re naked!
A rehearsal for Curtain Call’s
production of Reefer Madness isn’t
your typical run through.
It’s a little more exciting.
The majority of the cast and crew
is naked.
Nearly, anyway. Almost every
person in the room is wearing
nothing but their underwear. While
you might think the situation would
lead to a whole lot of awkwardness
and embarrassment, there is a sense
of complete familiarity in the room
among the cast and crew.
Whether they’re running
through a scene, confirming song
harmonies, or going through notes
and feedback, it is obvious that the
cast and crew have become a close-
knit group of people.
Executive producer Brian Cunha
explains that having the “naked”
rehearsals is an exercise to establish
a good rapport between everyone.
As well, the partial nudity helps the
players get accustomed to the style of
the show itself.
“The show is not like Carousel. It’s
not some cute little nice musical,” said
Cunha. “Reefer Madness gets really
down and dirty and we wanted to
make sure everyone was comfortable
with each other, so we asked them
to wear as little as possible, whatever
they are comfortable with. We also
have a lot of different social events
that we do together to build that
sense of community.”
Beyond occasionally being in
your underwear, the rehearsal process
has become something that the cast
and crew look forward to.

to perform for free at benefits,
the Guelph benefit is particularly
unique as all costs of the event
have waved: postering has been
done free of charge, food has been
donated for the artists and the city
has stepped forward and offered
organizers the use of the River Run
Centre.
“Its always a challenge when
you’re organizing fundraising events
that all the money you make will go
to the cause that you’re supporting,”
said co-organizer Dr. Ajay Heble,
a professor of English and theatre
at the University of Guelph. “I
think we are quite fortunate in that
we are able to get the city council
to wave all the costs with the use
of the River Run Centre which
would normally be out of our reach
financially.”

goal of raising $20,000 dollars, with
all proceeds going to the Canadian
Curtain Calls production of Reefer Madness will be running from March 17-20. Tickets will go on sale on
February 22.

like the way that it’s set up, the way
that we separate scene work and
vocal and dance. It really helps me
concentrate on each specific aspect.
I haven’t been involved with Curtain
Call before, but I already feel so
comfortable with everyone.”
There’s no doubt that being
involved in the production is time
consuming. Rehearsals have been
going on for about a month now:
six hours on Sundays, and up to four
nights during the week.
But those involved say it’s worth
it.
“I’ve taken up a good chunk of
my time to put towards something
positive and awesome,” said Henry.
“It does take up a lot of my time on a
Red Cross, an organization they
said is capable of getting the funds
raised directly to Haiti.
Both Turton and Heble
recognized the unique scheduling of
the event-the benefit concert takes
place the day after Hillside Inside
and on Superbowl Sunday- but are
confident that the 140 performers
taking the stage at the River Run
Centre, 100 of those coming from
the University of Guelph choirs,
will attract a large turnout.
“I think it [the Super Bowl]
does have an effect, but what we
are dealing with think is unique,
the coordination and the variety.
We got some interesting pieces the
choir is going to do. Then we got
Kevin Wright who is the world’s
craziest guitarist who can do
anything and everything. And Jane
Bunnett who is just a jazz icon,”
said Turton. “You’ll never see this
people together in this way ever
again. Any performers that people
know from around here who are
not playing is because they are on
weekly basis, but it’s time that I look
forward to.”

we have a passion for the arts and we

In the rehearsal room, the cast
go through the number they are
working on and everyone is obviously
enjoying themselves. They have been
learning this number all day and will
run through it countless times before
the official performances. However,
there’s no denying the glee on the
faces of those performing and those
watching others perform.
“We definitely looked for people
who seemed like team players, who
were giving it their all and trying
their hardest,” said director Adam
Pellerine. “I think Curtain Call is
really good for bringing everybody
together. It gives people chances. If
they’re in bio-med or whatever, they
have a chance to do this.”
“Curtain Call is a club on
campus foremost,” says Cunha. “Our
first objective is not to put on a good
show, contrary to popular belief. It’s
to make sure that the members have
a good experience. So, they have a
good experience and then it’s like,
let’s make the show really great. If we
have both of those at the end of the
year, then our job is done.”

in a surprisingly delightful way.
Thankfully, Ezra Koenig (singer/
guitarist and former English
teacher) resists talking about
obscure grammar; unfortunately,
there are no Lil’ Jon references.
“Giving Up The Gun” is the most
pop-sounding Vampire Weekend
track to date, which will rot your
teeth if you’re not careful. My
personal favourite is the catchy-
as-hell M.I.A. sampled, “Cha-Lat,
Cha-Lat, Cha” on “Diplomat’s
Son” which will be stuck in my
head for the next month.
Two things happen when
a band of Vampire Weekend’s
former status gets this kind of
recognition: first, there is backlash
from previous fans that can’t stand
that their indie band is now a
household name and second, old
fans rub it in the new fans’ faces
about how long they’ve been
listening to Vampire Weekend and
how much better their old stuff
is. I urge anyone who feels like
joining either of these two camps
to resist. Instead, if you’re feeling
like you’ve lost something special,
take solace in the fact that a lot of
Vampire Weekend’s new found
popularity is probably because of
sexy teenage vampires.

Attack in Black to sow some
more seeds in Guelph

Almost one year ago, Attack
in Black released their third full
length album and arguably the best
indie release of 2009. The disc was
called Years (by One Thousand
Fingertips) and it brought forth yet
another fantastic avenue of their
continually changing sound. In
the midst of finishing up their next
release and with talks of putting
together a live DVD, Attack in
Black will be at the eBar in Guelph
this Wednesday. The Ontarion
caught up with guitarist Spencer
Burton who shed some light on
Years as well as some of the recent
developments for the guys from
Welland.
The Ontarion: Years took
an obvious change of direction,
departing from your harder,
more punk-oriented sound on
previous records. Although
this alienated fans resistant to
a change of direction, it was a
fantastic record that brought
along many new supporters with
it. How did this change come
about?
Spencer Burton: Basically, we
were going to record a pre-album-
album. We had all these songs,
but we also had all these other
songs. So we wanted to record an
album to put out before we put
out the album, literally put it out
a week before. We recorded it in
our basement over a few weeks.
One day we’d record three songs,
one day half of one. One night I
recorded a song at like four in the
morning and we had all had a half
bottle of whiskey each. It was just
crazy recording, but we finished
and we were like ‘this is cool,
we like this. Lets just take this
[material] out of the real album
and save those other songs.’ So,
we ended up just putting out these
songs which would become Years.
O: I know with past albums
like Marriage, band members
Daniel Romano and Ian Kehoe
were responsible for the song
writing. What was different

SB: We each came to the table
with our own songs. With [ EP
The Curve of the Earth] we each
wrote three songs and with Years
it was like that. A lot of them were
collaborations of the entire band,
all together. We all wrote the
lyrics and songs and everything
came together. No song was really
written without everyone else’s
input. But Kehoe is always really
good with words; He’s got input
on everybody’s lyrics. We’ll go to
him and say, “hey man, you got
any ideas?.”
O: With the upcoming eBar
date in mind, how do you guys
like playing Guelph?
SB: Guelph itself is a really
cool city. The people who come out
to the shows are always very cool
people, and through the people
I’ve met its just a nice community.
I’m really excited, I actually really
miss playing there.
O: What’s the news with the

SB: We’ve done the demos
already (its 10 songs) and were just
gonna wait for the label to give
us the go ahead. The demos are
done and probably at the end of
this tour we’re gonna go back into
the studio and do some proper
recording. It’ll probably take a few
weeks, but I’d like to release it in
September or maybe early August
so we can tour right after. As for
the live DVD we’re just playing
with the idea. For the first half of
this tour, our friend Dan Weston
came out and recorded all the
shows and Ian has been recording
every show so far. We just want
to keep doing it until we get that
perfect show and from there we’ll
see where we’re at.

Collins illustrates this brilliantly
with an anecdote about the
extraordinary tennis player Billie
Jean King.
As one of the most successful
professional athletes of the time,
King made hundreds of thousands
of dollars in endorsements and
prize money from tournaments
such as Wimbledon and other
Grand Slam events. Still, when
she applied for a credit card, her
husband had to give her written
permission. He was a law student
who earned no income.
The book is packed with other
stories of sexist discrimination from
the past 50 years across Canada
and the United States. Many of
them portray instances that are
absolutely degrading, even brutal,

all of them once being routine.
They are enraging and enthralling
at the same time, making When
Everything Changed worth the
read.
But, Collins gives the reader so
much more. Unlike other books on
the subject, her account does not
ignore or glaze over the profoundly
different, but still transformative
experiences of black women, poor
women, and farmwives.
Her method of storytelling
grabs your attention in such a
way that you not only absorb her
message, but continue to think
about it in the days and weeks
after you put the book down: not
something I would say all other
history books.
Telling statistics are interspersed
with detailed and revealing
interviews with women who were
there - from factory workers,
telephone operators, and mothers
whose newfound freedom changed
the course of their lives, to Gloria
Steinem, probably the most famous
and influential feminist of all time.
When Everything Changed wraps
up with several chapters about
issues facing women today in the
home, in the workplace, and in the
public sphere. Here, Collins asks
more questions than she answers,
but they are the big questions that
our generation of women, men and
families will be facing.

Time and time again, he brought
fans out of their seats, whether it
was hitting a clutch three-pointer, a
driving layup or a timely defensive
stop.
Nick Pankerichan was the face
of Gryphons basketball.
Just one year ago, Pankerichan
was sporting the red, gold, and
black uniform as the starting point
guard for the University of Guelph
Gryphons men’s basketball team.
This year, however, Pankerichan
sports a tailored suit, while holding
a clipboard, and can only shout
instructions from the bench.
Pankerichan’s new role with the
men’s basketball program is as
assistant coach for the Gryphons.
Pankerichan finished his stellar
playing career as the second-
leading scorer in Gryphons history
with 1,231 points. Since the end of
his playing career, Pankerichan has
turned his experience as a player
into knowledge that he shares

recruited to play basketball for the
Gryphons, Pankerichan knew he
would be a go-to guy, both on and
off the court.
“I was always that leader on the
floor that tried to talk to guys and
learn,” said Pankerichan about his
playing days.

leading scorer this season, Jay
Mott, spoke highly of his former “Panks was always a coach
teammate-turned-coach. on the floor when he was a point
guard,” said Mott, using the familiar
nickname that Pankerichan picked
up as a player. “He commands our
respect, and he has had a big effect
on me as a player, making me
better.”
Pankerichan believes that his
court leadership played a part in
him being asked to help coach
Gryphons basketball.
“Coach (Chris O’Rourke)
always believed I was a coach on
the floor and I think that is why
he asked me to come help out the
team,” he said.
As an assistant coach,
Pankerichan tries to motivate the
players in a positive way in order
to help them play at their best.
Pankerichan describes his coaching
style as positive.
“I am always a positive guy,” he
said. “I don’t really remember a time
in my career being negative.”
The biggest difference that
Pankerichan has noticed about
going from playing to coaching is
the mindset.
“As a player, before the game [I
was] thinking about yourself and
what I needed to do to get the team
going,” he said. “As a coach, [I’m]
thinking of the overall package.

should we put in substitutions? It’s
definitely a big adjustment for me.”
When asked if he saw a player
that resembled his playing style on
the current roster for the Gryphons,
Pankerichan had one in mind.
“If there is one player that I
would say that is very good and
models his game after me, it
would be…Dan McCarthy,” said
Pankerichan, speaking highly of
the Gryphons second-year guard
who interestingly has chosen to
wear Pankerichan’s old jersey
number, 4, after sporting 15 in his
rookie season. “[McCarthy] always
works hard and that’s what I always
wanted to do [as well]. You can
always make mistakes but you can
never stop working hard.”
After serving as an assistant
for the better part of this season,
Pankerichan will now be missed as
he is traveling to Australia for the
next six months to attend teacher’s
college. This will be the first time
that Pankerichan will be away from
the basketball program in six and
a half years, going back to his first
season as a Gryphon.
“It is really going to finally hit
that my career is done as a player,”
he said. “I haven’t felt it [yet]
because I have been a coach and
still part of the program and I still
have that family atmosphere.”

Masters at McGill
Both the Gryphon men’s and
women’s track and field teams
placed first at the McGill Team
Challenge over the weekend. As a
team, the Gryphons won 27 medals
and had 10 more athletes achieve
CIS standard, qualifying them
for the national championships in
March. Rachel Cliff won gold in
both the 1500m and 3000m races
and multiple Gryphons achieved
podium finishes in both distance
races on the men’s and women’s
sides. Check the scoreboard for

Hockey talk
The Gryphon men scored early
and often on Thursday evening,
crushing the Brock Badgers 9-0.
Thomas Kiriakou scored four
points and Nathan Martine
and Tim Priamo added three
each for the surging Gryphons,
who followed up Thursday’s
performance with a 3-2 squeaker
over Windsor on Saturday
night. The Gryphons (11-10-4)
received outstanding goaltending
from Scott Van Bommel in both
wins. On the women’s side, the
Gryphons extended their win
streak to four games with a 4-2
win over Waterloo on Saturday,
only to have it snapped in a tight
2-1 loss to undefeated Laurier on
Sunday afternoon.
Basketball blues
The 2009-10 season continues
to be a struggle for the Gryphons
basketball teams as both the men
and women dropped a pair of games
against McMaster and Brock last
week. On Wednesday, despite a
valiant effort and 25 points from
Alex Russell, the women fell 70-
63 to the Marauders, while the
men dropped an 83-76 overtime
heartbreaker to their Hamilton
rivals. Saturday was no different as
the Badger women overmatched
the Gryphons 63-42, dropping the
lady Gryphs to 2-14 on the season.
On the men’s side, the Badgers and
Gryphons (5-11) went right down
to the bitter end with Brock edging
Guelph 57-56 in a hard fought
defensive affair. The Gryphon men
have now lost seven games by five
points or less.

A toast to good health

benefits. But is it
worth it?

When one thinks of wine, it is
generally with thoughts of flavour,
food pairings and overall fondness.
But all things delicious are
usually bad for you, right?
Not so fast. Numerous reports
exist, outlining the potential health
benefits of certain wines.
Historically, wine has held
a position of importance and
popularity in a vast number of
cultures. Its roots date back to
ancient Mesopotamian times. Wine
was perfected and proliferated by
the French in the 15th Century. Its
popularity has grown exponentially
and wine now constitutes 28
per cent of total alcohol sales
worldwide.
Recently, there has been much
discussion about the health benefits
of wine – red wine, specifically.
While both whites and reds can
be beneficial, red wine is believed
to be more advantageous because
of the way in which it is processed.
The skin is left on the grape during
processing and it is this skin that
is richest in the grape’s beneficial
health properties. Benefits of red
wine are attributed to a number
of properties including flavonoids,
melatonin and reveratrol.
Flavonoids hold antioxidant
properties and are thought to aid in
the prevention of various cancers by
helping the body neutralize certain
free radicals that can trigger the
cellular activity that may lead to
cancer.
Melatonin is a substance found
in red wine, which is said to combat
the oxidative and inflammatory
processes, which tend to accompany
old age.
The phenomenon of the “French
Paradox” has long been seen as a
mystery.
Why is it that the French
appear to be able to consume a diet
higher in fat than the norm, while
enjoying a comparatively lower
incidence of heart disease? The
answer is now thought to be found
in the consumption of red wine
among the French population.
Reservatrol is a natural
byproduct of grape skins and is
said to mimic the positive health
benefits of caloric reduction,
namely, lowering the risk of heart
disease.
However positive these
beneficial properties seem, they
are by no means a green light for
increased consumption. The most
critical factor highlighted in studies
of red wine is moderation.
While at times a foreign concept

to many student ‘wine connoisseurs,’
moderation and low-risk drinking
are two keys to taking advantage
of the health benefits of red wine.
Experts tend to agree that one
glass a day can be beneficial (and a
‘glass’ refers to a 5oz serving, not a
pint glass), but any more than this
can have detrimental effects. Many
disagree with the health claims of
wine altogether and argue that the
numerous detrimental effects of the
alcohol in wine negate its positive
attributes.
“The term ‘moderation’ is
a slippery slope in terms of its
definition,” said Melanie Bowman,
manager of the Wellness Centre at
the University of Guelph. “What is
important is highlighting low-risk
drinking, which includes knowing
your body and its limits and staying
within them.”
Bowman stressed the fact that
it is important to think critically
about the alleged health benefits
of wine, and to realize the negative
effects that alcohol can have.
“Alcohol is a natural depressant
and can negatively impact mood,
academics and behaviour,” she
continued. “Drinking can have
detrimental effects on the heart and
liver. It is important for students
to find healthy alternatives to
drinking.”
So crack open a bottle of
delicious Chianti, have a glass with
your next plate of pasta, but don’t
finish that bottle.

their Canadian counterparts.
This is not a recent paradox
with the game’s most important
position being comprised entirely
of Americans. Doug Flutie? Raised
in Maryland and a Boston College
Alum. Damon Allen? Raised on
the (American) West coast, and an
outstanding two-sport athlete at
Cal State Fullerton. Warren Moon?

his college ball with the Washington
Huskies.

to continue their careers, despite
the fact that this country has a
professional football league of its
own that should be supporting their
further development.
Granted, the CFL has a
Canadian quota system in place:
half of each team’s roster is reserved
for Canadian athletes; however, their
college location does not matter (so
Canadian-born athletes who play
NCAA are part of the Canadian
quota) nor does the position that
they play. Generally, Canadians on
CFL teams are offensive linemen,
defensive backs and receivers.
Former Gryphons Mike Palmer,
Dave McKoy and now Brad
Crawford fit the bill.
But as far as quarterbacks
go, Canadian signal-callers are
extremely rare. The only successful
historical example is Russ Jackson,
a McMaster Alum who played
professionally with the Ottawa
Rough Riders in the 1960s. Recent
CIS-grads Tommy Denison and
Teale Orban have tried to get a foot
in the door, but to no avail, losing
jobs to American competition.
But doom and gloom aside, as
a great songwriter once said, “the
times, they are a-changin.’”
Maybe.
In this past CIS football season,
we have witnessed arguably the
greatest quarterback talent in the
history of the league. Erik Glavic
(Calgary), Michael Faulds (Western),
Danny Brannagan (Queen’s) and
Guelph’s own Justin Dunk have
combined to shatter all-time passing
records for Canadian quarterbacks,
raising the bar for quality at the
position and reintroducing the age-
old argument in favour of Canadian
quarterbacks playing at the next level.
And it seems that coaches and
general managers in the CFL are
starting to listen.
Homegrown talents have brought
an entirely new level of legitimacy
to the position and the players are
being rewarded accordingly.
Glavic, Faulds and Brannagan
have all received invites to try out as
quarterbacks at the CFL’s upcoming
Evaluation Camp in Toronto, to
be held in March. Dunk will try
out as a receiver and hopes that his
virtually unparalleled athleticism
will be enough to afford him an
opportunity to showcase his skills in
the professional ranks. No Canadian
quarterbacks attended the 2009
E-Camp.
While an invite to the CFL’s
E-Camp is by no means a guaranteed
professional job – these Canadians
haven’t been drafted by a CFL team
– it is still a giant step in the right
direction for these accomplished
and remarkably talented athletes.
Glavic and Faulds arguably have
the best chance at moving forward.
Glavic, a Pickering native and two-
time Hec Crighton trophy winner, is
six-foot-six with a big arm and the
ability to move around and outside
the pocket. Faulds is a rifle-armed,
on-field general with incredible
heart and the all-time leading passer
in CIS history.
Dunk may be the wildcard.
Blessed with good size,
exceptional speed, agility and
elusiveness, it’s not out of the
question to foresee a future for him
at wideout in the CFL, especially
given the recent success of Canadian
receivers in the league. Mike
Morreale, Jason Clermont, Andy
Fantuz and Rob Bagg come to mind
– yeah, if you haven’t figured it out
yet, I’m kind of a fan.
Regardless of how successful
Glavic, Faulds, Brannagan and
Dunk are in their respective tryouts,
these four student-athletes have
done a remarkable job of bringing
national relevance to the quarterback
position once again.
Now someone just needs to give
them a chance.

The best part of the
Super Bowl

Around this time of year, the Internet is exploding with the best
tasting, fattiest and most cholesterol-laden recipes for that lovely
tradition: the Super Bowl. Are you having a party? Are you going to a
party? Are you watching it alone? Or maybe you’re watching Breakfast at
Tiffany’s and had no idea the Super Bowl is this weekend.
The dip is designed for meat-n-cheesetarians, but if you are a
vegetarian, simply leave out the chicken, or add tofu and it will be just
as tasty.
The bruschetta takes an old favourite and adds a little feta flavour.
Now, the sacred instructions:
BUFFALO BRUSCHETTA
WITH FETA !
CHICKEN
WING DIP
I: I
2 chicken breasts Mix:
1 1/2 - 2 cups of shredded 5 medium-sized tomatoes,
marble or cheddar cheese chopped into cubes
1 cup of blue cheese salad 1/3 cup of diced red onion
dressing (Renee’s works best) 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
1 package of cream cheese 1/2 teaspoon of oregano
1/2 cup of hot sauce (Frank’s Separate:
regular is preferred) 1 large baguette
1/2 cup of olive oil
1/2 teaspoon of basil
Medium-sized cube of
feta cheese, crumbled

Cut up uncooked chicken Combine all ingredients
breasts into pieces about the size for bruschetta mix and put the
of a quarter. Cook the chicken in mixture in the fridge for about
a frying pan with a little oil and
a little hot sauce. Preheat oven
to 375°F . Mix all ingredients
three hours. Cut the baguette in
half, lengthwise and then into
individual pieces to your desired
together in an oven-safe cookware size. Spread olive oil and sprinkle
dish. Place in preheated oven, basil on the baguette pieces. Place
uncovered for 30 minutes. When baguette pieces in the oven, set on
the dip is done, there will be an broil until bread begins to toast
overwhelming amount of grease (should take about 1 minute,
on top – use a ladle, spoon, or paper WATCH CAREFULLY!) Put
towel to remove as much grease as the bruschetta mix on the toasted
possible. Enjoy with tortilla chips. baguette pieces, add crumbled feta
Touchdown! and place in oven at 350 degrees
for 10 minutes.

A successful recovery

The month was March and the
Gryphon Centre was the scene of the
2009 OUA women’s hockey playoffs
between the Brock Badgers and the
Guelph Gryphons. The game had
just begun and the ice was still fresh
as the Gryphons looked to capitalize
on the powerplay.
The Gryphons came into the
series ranked second in the OUA,
sporting one of the most prolific
offences in the country, led by Jessica
Zerafa, the league’s leading goal-
scorer.
After narrowly missing a scoring
chance in front, Zerafa, on just her
second shift, chased a loose puck
into the corner, when she took a light
push from behind, sending her feet-
first into the boards.
What happened next remains
somewhat of a blur for Zerafa, but
she does remember being unable to
feel her leg as she was helped off the
ice, assuming that it was shattered.
“It was really emotional for me,”
said Zerafa. “I instantly thought that
my leg was broken and I figured that
I would be out for the rest of the
playoffs.”
Zerafa already had shoulder
surgery – her third – planned for
after the season, so the expectation
of being bedridden already existed
prior to injury. Nevertheless, her
season was over, forcing Zerafa to
watch her team from the stands as
they defeated Brock in the OUA
semi-finals, only to bow out to rival
Laurier in the championship series.
“It was so difficult to have to
watch,” Zerafa said, about observing
the remainder of the playoffs from
the sidelines. “I even tried to skate
before the first Laurier game but
there was no way I could get out
there and I had to accept that I
couldn’t be out there and I had to
be a cheerleader from the sidelines.
It was great to watch but it would’ve
been better to be out there.”
Upon diagnosis, the leg was not
broken; Zerafa had suffered the
dreaded high ankle sprain, an injury
that sounds simple, but as any athlete
rightfully knows, the type of injury
that has a long recovery period and
uncertainty about how the ankle will
respond following rehab.
High ankle sprains are usually
not dealt with via surgery, but rather,
a slow rehabilitation process.
“I knew that one way or another,
I’d be back on the ice one day,” said
Zerafa. “I’ve been through a lot of
injuries in the past. This one was just
frustrating.”
A high ankle sprain, besides
being more complicated than a break,
meant two months in a walking
cast and six months off the ice, an
excruciatingly long time away from
the ice for a player as dedicated to her
sport as Zerafa. When she was able
to resume skating in August, there
were definite reservations about how
quickly she could return to the form
that led to her being named an OUA
Second Team All-star in 2009.
“When I first put my skates back
on, I was experiencing some pain,”
Zerafa said. “I didn’t know if I’d be
able to get back out there in time for

the season.”
Watching Zerafa’s triumphant
return to the ice this year, however,
her ankle – as well as her shoulder –
seems to be responding admirably.
Zerafa has played in all 24 games
thus far, and has scored ten goals and
24 points, good for third on the team
and a tie for 11th in league scoring.
With the injury still relatively
fresh in her mind, visions of March
still go through Zerafa’s mind every
time she chases a puck into the
corner.
“In the first few games, I felt a
little traumatized to go into that same
corner where I got hurt,” admitted
Zerafa. “I wondered, ‘Am I going to
lose my footing? Am I going to get
hit?’ It became the evil corner, but
I’ve looked past it now.”
With only three games left before
the playoffs begin, and the Gryphons
starting to peak, Zerafa relishes the
idea of a rematch with Laurier, the
league’s only undefeated team and
the OUA champions for the past six
years.
“Every time we play them
we’re just so close [to winning],”
said Zerafa. “Our coach (Rachel
Flanagan) said the other day that
once we beat them one time, we’ll be
able to keep it up. I feel good about
the playoffs. If we play Laurier again,
we’ll get it done this time.
“We’ve had a lot of ups and
downs this year, but we have a really
good team on paper,” she continued.
“I definitely think we’re peaking at

DAN O’KEEFE’S VEGAN CHALLENGE

Monday, Feb. 1 marked my
official transition into veganism.
This transition, however, wasn’t
from steak on the 31st to lettuce
on the 1st. As I mentioned last
week, I have been vegetarian since
returning to Guelph for the winter
semester.
As a vegetarian, I was still able to
enjoy eggs, French toast, milk, grilled
cheese sandwiches, and honey. These
delectable items have now vanished
from my plate, but that doesn’t
mean that I have just stopped eating.
In fact, I am probably eating better
than I ever have before.
What is very fortunate for
people with unique diets, whether
vegetarian, vegan, kosher, or
any other, is that the University
of Guelph provides countless
alternatives for people with different
dietary preferences. In barely half an
hour, one can traverse the campus
and come across no fewer than
sixteen different food facilities,
which offer vegan-friendly food.
Of course, at some of the eateries,
not many of the menu options
are vegan. But still, every place on
campus can offer you something.
One of my favourites has to be
Creelman Marketplace. Nature’s
Best Vegetarian offers some amazing
dishes, and always has at least one
vegan option.
I have become quite familiar
with the salad bar. I usually passed
this up on my way to the nightly
beef or fish special, but now I go out
of my way looking for it.
One essential that vegans can
easily miss out on is iron. Some of
the best sources of iron are beef,
chicken, and turkey, none of which
even remotely qualifies as vegan-
friendly.
On the other hand, one of a
vegan’s best friends is spinach. A big
spinach salad has more iron than the
average golf bag, along with over
twenty other essential vitamins and

nutrients. While I haven’t become
Popeye yet, I am not discouraged,
and continue to consume this super-
food at unprecedented rates.
Many people, myself included,
find spinach bitter. My solution is
simple and delicious.
I create a spinach salad with
watermelon and cantaloupe. The
sweet melon balances the bitter
vegetable nicely.
As do many students, I survive
on a diet spiked with caffeine. I am
not as bad as some, but more days
than not, I enjoy a cup of coffee or
tea. My preferred cup was a double-
double with milk, but since last
summer, I’ve been going without the
sugar.
As a vegan now, that makes my
coffee black, which I am not thrilled
with. However, I found a little
surprise that made me very happy.
The Bull Ring always has a jug of
fortified soy beverage, also known as
soymilk.
So now I head over to the
‘Ring’ to grab a cup of coffee. Even
more convenient is that many of
the hospitality services on campus
carry the same product, along with
chocolate and vanilla variations to
please any palate. All three check
out as vegan, even the chocolate
variation, because the ingredient
used for the chocolate flavour is
cocoa, not milk chocolate.
The hardest part of the transition
has not been getting used to new
foods, or even going without certain
foods, but changing my mentality.
The first thing I think of when
considering a meal is what meat
will my dish consist of, and what
sides will complement the meat. I
have had to make a conscious effort
to think differently regarding food;
however, I feel that by week two
or three, that will no longer be an
issue.
What I have been surprised and
delighted with is just how I feel. I
feel incredible!
I feel like I am running at
100 per cent efficiency. I just feel
healthy. Admittedly, it could be
the knowledge of an improved diet
having a placebo effect on me. Still, I
feel amazing, and I love it.
So far, so good. I am eating well
and feeling great. Can I stay on
track? We’ll find out as the Vegan
Challenge continues.

of anal play

What sexy activity could be
next in line for its public acceptance
explosion?
I’d argue that it’s anal play, and
this article is going to give all you
budding ass connoisseurs a run
down on how to safely enjoy all the
pleasures that can come from it.
Let’s talk about who partakes in
anal play. The first misconception
that needs to be cleared up is that
anal sex is only for gay men. While
there certainly are gay men who do
so, by no stretch of the imagination
do all gay men engage in anal
stimulation. Sexual orientation
and gender don’t decide what sort
of stimulation a person enjoys:
men and women, both cis and
transgendered, from everywhere
along the Kinsey scale, can enjoy
anal stimulation or not.
Hopefully this clears up the silly
notion that it is somehow “gay” for
a man to enjoy anal stimulation.
The ass is the great common
denominator when it comes to
sexual pleasure: everybody has one.
Both male and female anuses are
full of delightfully sensitive nerve
endings (half of all of them in the
entire pelvic region, to be precise)
concentrated mainly around the
opening and just inside the rectum.
Male and female individuals have
differences when it comes to ass-
anatomy, however. Male individuals
have a prostate gland, a wonderful
little walnut-sized sensory gland
which sits between the rectum and
the urethra and below the bladder
and can be accessed through the

rectum, as well as massage to
the perineum. Female-bodied
individuals don’t have a prostate;
the g-spot, however, can also be
stimulated through the rectum.
The ass is the

when it comes to
sexual pleasure:
everybody has
one.
Those aforementioned nerve
endings found in the anus can be
stimulated in many ways. A good
way for someone to find out if anal
stimulation is something they’ll
enjoy is to start slowly, gently and
externally, with a finger massaging
the very opening of the anus, or

maybe even oral anal stimulation
(anilingus). If this sort of touch feels
good, it can be an indicator that
that person might also enjoy anal
penetration. Many people enjoy the
sensation of being “filled up” and as
mentioned before, both the prostate
and g-spot can be reached and
played with (often to very enjoyable
results) through anal penetration.
When it comes to putting
things inside your butt, there are
some important ground rules to
remember. The opening of the
anus has two rings of muscle
surrounding it, the internal and
external sphincters. You can control
the opening and closing of the
external one, but not the internal.
The internal sphincter can be gently
coaxed into allowing access, but
this takes gentle, slow stimulation
and a relaxed state of mind. So,
anal penetration Rule #1: go slowly
and relax. Rule #2 (which is just
as important): always use lube.
Unlike the vagina, the anus is not
self-lubricating, and the wall tissue
of the rectum is also much thinner
and is susceptible to tearing. Lots

and lots of good quality, latex-safe
lubricant makes penetration a much
smoother process. And remember,
while anal penetration might feel
slightly uncomfortable if you aren’t
used to it, it should never hurt. Pain
is your body’s way of letting you
know to slow down, add more lube,
and try again. Rule #3: the anus is
a vacuum, which means you should
never put anything inside your butt
which doesn’t have a wide, flared
base or is long enough to hold on
to. Rule #4: the rectum contains
bacteria which can cause nasty
infections if in contact with other
orifices, like the vagina. So always
be sure to cover anything going
inside with a condom, and if you
are planning on switching between
anal and oral or vaginal penetration,
use a fresh condom or clean toy for
each new activity.
Anal play is something that can
be enjoyed alone or with a partner.
There’s a world of sex toys available
designed specifically for anal
stimulation including buttplugs
(which are generally inserted and
kept in the anus while other activities

are happening), anal beads (which
can be inserted and removed at the
moment of orgasm for increased
pleasure) and some dildos (which
are generally used for thrusting).
Penile-anal sex is another option
available to couples, and can be
very intimate due to the amount of
trust required in allowing someone
to enter your anus. Strap-on dildos
allow partners without penises
to take on the role of penetrator,

Some people can be turned off
by the idea of anal play because they

important to remember is that the

the station,” and you have bathed
recently, you’ll be plenty clean. On
the off chance there happens to be
an unexpected incident, as long as
all parties involved understand that
it’s a risk you run with anal play, and
not the end of the world, it shouldn’t
be devastating.
Like everything to do with
sex, anal play isn’t going to be for
everyone.
But as long as you play safe,
take it slowly and keep clean,
there’s no harm in experimenting
with something new. Who knows,
you might just discover your new

Conservatives on dissent: just wait

The federal government’s
reaction to a Supreme Court ruling
on the fate Omar Khadr is a wake-
up call for Canadians, albeit an
unusual one.
On Friday, the Supreme
Court unanimously declared that
Canadian officials were complicit in
the abuse of Khadr during his time
in U.S custody, now in its 8th year,
and that there is an ongoing threat
to his rights.

In 1912, mankind built
the Titanic. It was the biggest
and baddest ship ever made at
the time; it was believed to be
unsinkable.
It sank.
That’s the version many people
know. But what is often left out
of the story is that the massive
icebergs that took down the
Titanic broke off from Greenland,
the largest island of ice on Earth.
Almost a century later, the same
icebergs that crushed one of
mankind’s greatest symbols of
human power is preparing to
strike again.
With 10 per cent of the world’s
fresh water currently frozen there,
the disappearance of Greenland’s
ice sheet will cause sea levels
around the world to rise by seven
meters. For centuries, the ice
sheets maintained equilibrium:
glaciers and melted water poured
into the oceans in the summer
and frozen snow replenished the
ice sheets in the winter. However,
new scientific studies are showing
that this equilibrium no longer
holds, and Greenland’s ice sheet
is now shedding more ice than it
is accumulating.
It will take centuries for
the world’s great ice sheets
to be completely gone, so the
immediate threat of a seven-
metre sea level rise will not
happen in our lifetime.
But as glaciologist Gordon
Hamilton puts it, “it will only
be the first metre that matters.”
And this first metre is predicted
to take place by 2100. As research
on the Greenland ice sheet is
still quite new, however, this
prediction may change for better
or for worst. This uncertainty can
be seen as a blessing or a curse.
On the bright side, we are given
the chance at changing our ways
and swaying the results in our
favour. However, it is more likely
people will find a way to mentally
distance themselves from the
impeding dangers of a slowly
melting world.

It’s a disturbing trend of laissez-
faire partisanship. Rather than attack
its critics, the Conservatives have
decided to be patient. Given the
amount of power vested with the
PMO, it just needs to wait out the
clock or people that get in their way.
The prorogation of parliament is the
most high-profile example, but it’s
perhaps the least destructive.
Parliament can pass laws. Courts
can make rulings. Civil servants can
gripe. But, as the conservatives have
proven, it generally can’t make the
government do anything.
Such was the case when the
government opted not to reappoint
Peter Tinsley as chair of the Military
Police Complaints Commission.
Tinsley’s sin was to be impartial
as he investigated allegations that
Afghan prisoners captured by
Canadian soldiers were abused in
Afghan prisons. Opposition MPs
have passed bills calling for an
investigation into the detainee file,
but it’s merely a formality.
There was a lot of griping from
progressives about the effectiveness
of Paul Kennedy, who until last
month was Chair of the RCMP
Public Complaints Commission.
Still, he was a 35-year veteran of
federal security agencies who issued
some scathing (though non-binding)
reports about the Mounties – that
is, until the Conservatives opted to
not renew him last fall. Kennedy’s

Image always has been an
important part of any pop performer’s
career, but on Billboard top 10s filled
with costumed and outrageous singers
like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga
and Ke$ha it’s almost impossible to
draw any kind of distinction between
the performer and the person.
Alter egos aren’t entirely
unprecendented. Back in the good
old days, The Beatles had Sgt.
Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,
David Bowie had Ziggy Stardust and
Aladdin Sane, and in the 1990s even
Garth Brooks had Chris Gaines.
In the past decade Mariah Carey
emancipated Mimi; we met Damita
Jo Jackson, Janet’s more sensual alter
ego; and Ciara took (no) listeners
on a Fantasy Ride as the vitamin
supplement-sounding Super C. But
with each of them it was nothing
more than a sidebar, a part of their
career that existed outside of the
music they’d created as themselves.
The persona being embedded so
strongly in every aspect of their
careers is certainly a striking, and
fairly new, trend.

It’s hard to say whether this
is a business move that’s easier or
harder to market. Record sales are
in the toilet, but concert ticket sales
are breaking records. It seems like
a shrewd business move to shift
attention towards the theatrical aspect
and acquiescing to poor sales figures
than pandering to them.

the singer-as-entertainer had a place
in popular music long before rock
and roll and the singer-as-artist’s
emergence. But throughout that
time, the men and women behind
the curtain— the wizards of Tin Pan
Alley, the Brill Building, Motown’s
Holland-Dozier-Holland, and Stock,
Aitken & Waterman, to name but
a few— kept the top 40 timely and
resonant.
At the Grammy’s this past
weekend Lady Gaga sang with Sir
Elton John on conjoined pianos. They
mashed up Gaga’s ‘Speechless’ with
John’s ‘Your Song’. While ‘Speechless’
is a beautiful Queen-esque track,
possibly the finest number on Gaga’s
newest album, it is nothing compared
to Sir Elton and songwriting partner
Bernie Taupin’s beautiful, subtle love
song. They just put some fireworks on
it and dressed up in Armani Privé.
Pop music is nothing if not of-the-
moment but that has never interfered
with certain songs becoming
generation-defining. When we look
back in 10 or 20 years, it won’t be
unlikely for people to remember the
costumes, the haircuts, the makeup
during the stage shows, the cartoon
characters of our cultural zeitgeist,
and not necessarily the songs. If that
ends up true, then surely we have all
lost the plot. And what are characters
without a plot?

The Information Technology
Student Advisory Committee
(ITSAC) is a forum consisting
of representatives from student
government associations and groups
across campus. We meet regularly
to discuss issues surrounding
information technology services
offered on campus. The meetings
facilitate the discussion amongst
various student groups concerning IT
related issues. ITSAC is mandated
to develop an annual report that is
presented to CCS management.
The report strives to improve the IT
support on campus as well as other
IT services provided.
Tech Bytes is a column that
will address common IT issues that
concern the general student body and
the things we deal with everyday. For

but we plan on talking about
everything IT, like how Web 2.0 is

EDITORIAL
Lacking due diligence
It was one of those weeks in
student politics, easily the most
controversial of the year, but
hopefully the last to spark such
outrage and dissent.
At last week’s CSA board
meeting, several proposals were
presented to the board by the
executive. One was a proposal to
combine the Human Rights Office,
the Financial Resource room and
the Legal Resource Room into
the Student Help and Advocacy
Centre (SHAC), which critics
say will result in a lack of focus
on human rights advocacy. The
board ratified another proposal,
one to eliminate the provision in
the CSA hiring process that gives
an advantage to students who
identify with a marginalized group
in the event that two candidates
for a job fall within five per cent of

employment policy required
applicants seeking marginalized
status to fill out a confidential form
indicating which marginalized
groups they identify with. The new
policy does not factor a person’s
marginalized status into the
hiring process, but rather tracks,
for statistical purposes, whether
marginalized persons are applying
for jobs with the CSA.
Then there was the proposal to
make changes to the job titles of
the CSA executive. For example,
Academic Commissioner would
become the Academic & University
Affairs Commissioner; the
Communication Commissioner
would become Communications &
Corporate Affairs Commissioner.
Three name changes passed,
with Local and External Affairs
Commissioner remaining the
same.
Each of these developments
has prompted dissent from groups
and individuals in the campus
community, arguing generally
that students were not properly
consulted about the propose
changes. Some went as far as
saying that the CSA initiatives are
“regressive and at odds with what
student unions are supposed to be
doing.”
The CSA, frustrated about their
inability to bring about welcomed
change, expressed disbelief over
how such changes could be so
poorly received.
As the only organization on
this campus tasked with presenting
the differing views on each one of
these issues, we can’t help but see
that the interested parties on both
ends of the issue need to remedy
the situation. And unless both
sides remedy the situation, the gap
will certainly widen.
Firstly, the CSA has spoken
at length about creating a type
of environment that will engage
students in the political process.
Well, make good on your plans.
It matters less whether the CSA
feels that the changes they’ve
made, and the manner they went
about making them, was just and
fair. What matters more is that
a significant group of students
were crying foul and felt that due
process had not been achieved.
Yet this week the CSA provided
students with little more than
justifications of the changes they
made. As one student explained,
the merits of the proposals and
changes are not the issue. The issue
is the process.
The CSA needs to reflect
long and hard about the source
of student dissatisfaction and
come up with real solutions, not
justifications. If consultation is at
the heart of the issue, regardless
of what the executive thinks,
sufficient efforts were not made.
But there is a fine line between
expressing your concerns in a
meaningful way and discrediting
your argument, as well as those
trying to spur on change in a
respectful manner.
At last week’s CSA board
meeting, a group of students
stormed the board meeting to
protest the proposal to the CSA’s
hiring practices. This week,
a flyer was distributed in the
UC courtyard, with no names
attached, making unfound claims
that devalued many of the truths
it presented. For example, the
executive’s proposal for changing
the names of their portfolios was
construed as a move “that will
look good in the current executives
resume (sic) when they break into
the business world.” It was also
implied that it was a farce to call
the CSA an equitable employer
because of the change to the CSA’s
equity policy.
If the intent of the flyer was to
rally up student support, it failed.
Unfortunately, most students
on this campus are apathetic to
politics, and presenting issues
to them in what looks like
sensationalist rhetoric, simply
won’t work. Doing this will also
simply devalue concerns in the
eyes of the executive.
The irony is that we believe the
CSA and individuals protesting
recent CSA decisions are
working for the same cause: the
advancement of students’ rights
and the overall betterment of the
campus community.
But ultimately, the outrage
this week was a result of a
communications breakdown on
the part of the CSA. The ball is
in their court, to show students in
a meaningful way that they do in
fact stand for student’s rights.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
At the recent anti-Harper
(whoops, I mean “anti-prorogation”)
rally in Guelph, Liberal MP
Frank Valeriote made some very
interesting remarks. He claimed that
“Harper’s going to bring in a motion
to reinstitute all of the pieces of
legislation that died, but conveniently
he will leave off that list a number of
controversial bills.” Let’s be clear: it
is the individual MP’s responsibility
to reintroduce bills, not the Prime
Minister’s. However, Guelph
residents shouldn’t hold their breath
for Valeriote to introduce a motion,
as Valeriote himself pointed out that
his own Liberal staffers are entirely
incompetent. Valeriote claimed that
“much of the [Liberal] staff would
already be in parliament, being paid
and simply unused.” Actually, since
the Governor General has not called
a new session, these staffers would
be in their offices, where the biggest
problem they would face is opening
constituency mail. According to
Valeriote’s own words, his staff are
being “unused” even though the
Canadian taxpayer is paying for
them. I guess that’s why Valeriote
is billing taxpayers for what he
calls “some additional costs,” so he
can travel to Ottawa to oversee his
Liberal Party workers, who can’t
seem to find the inner drive to work
without Valeriote’s presence.
The Liberals want Canadians
to trust them, but face an uphill
battle trying to erase the memory
of the Sponsorship Scandal and
the 2008 Liberal-NDP Coalition
that attempted to seize control of
the government a mere six weeks
after the Liberals were delivered
the worst electoral defeat since
1867. However, if Liberal Party
workers are as incompetent or lazy
as Valeriote claims, then no amount
of “rebranding” will help them.

Last Wednesday, several others and
myself attended part of the CSA’s
board meeting. We were concerned
about some of the recent proposals
and wanted the opportunity to
express how we felt. I was really
discouraged by what happened.
I did not feel that we were
welcome in the boardroom and got
the impression that Robert’s Rules
were being heavily enforced so that
we had no opportunity to speak.
We listened as changes were made
that reflect the CSA no longer
identifies as an equal opportunities
employer, and when students tried
to participate in the following
discussion, they were often silenced
by Robert’s Rules protocol. Only
after a motion put forward by a
concerned board member were we
allowed to have one student speak
for two minutes about why we had
come. This was vastly insufficient.
Later, we were granted a two-minute
recess specifically so we could speak
again, but while this was happening,
one of the execs left the room. The
CSA really didn’t seem to care about
what we had to say.

to start paying attention to the

financial challenges, there will be many changes
occurring within the Bachelor of Arts and Social
Science. These changes also provide the opportunity
for great possibilities and new direction within
our education and learning potential. As a highly
engaged student I am passionate about these issues
and already immersed in conversations about
potential new directions. As a senator I will strive
to push for great opportunities for students and
build a strong network of communication between

I’m Geoff Loughton, and I’m running for a
Bachelor of Arts undergraduate student Senate seat.
As a Political Science major, I have a keen interest
in the activities of representing governing bodies
and the mechanisms of democracy. The Senate is
one of two bodies that govern policy within the
University, and thus its activities are central to the
proper functioning of democracy here on campus.
While I have no illusions of affecting monumental
change in this position, I promise that if elected,
I will fulfill my duties as a Senator to the best of

I am an extremely involved student in the
International Development major. This year I
was President of the College of Social and Applied
Human Sciences Student Alliance. In my capacity
as President I grasped the importance of student

for academic change and gained substantial
knowledge and experience from my membership
on the Student Petitions Committee. I believe my
interests will continue to serve the community if

Whenever I am in class, I always daydream about
having classes where I interact with my professors
and classmates, learn from problem solving (not
just memorizing), and gain relevant skills and
experiences. Our degree structures are, in many
cases, so stringent that we often take courses that
we don’t like or are irrelevant, and we can’t explore
other areas. I want education that’s flexible,
engaging, and relevant; that is why I’m running
for senate. And with two years of experience in
the College of Biological Science Student Council
executive and CSA Board, I have the experience
and enthusiasm to push for such changes.

Group this year, and have consulted widely with
students and faculty surrounding the proposal to
