Adoption
Women who are not ready or are unwilling to
parent and do not want an abortion, can also
choose to carry the baby to term and give it up
for adoption. There are two different kinds of
adoption, open and closed.
An open adoption is where the
biological and adopting parents have some
contact. Women may choose an open adoption
to be reassured by meeting the family and
getting updates as the child grows.
Closed adoptions, also called
confidential adoptions, are where the biological
mother and adopting family dont have
information about each other. Closed adoptions
are becoming more rare, but women may
choose a closed adoption in order to have more
privacy. The adoption laws differ from state to
state, so find out what rights the biological
father has in your state.
A benefit of adoption is that adoption
can be decided at any point during the
pregnancy, and can even happen after the baby
is born. No two situations are the same, so it is
important to talk about your options and
reasons for choosing adoption with a trusted
family member, friend, or adoption counselor.

So you think youre

pregnant.

For more than 10 years

Planned Parenthood has
been an important and
valued resource in my life.

The only surefire way to determine if you are

pregnant is to take a pregnancy test, but there
are some early symptoms that may arise in
some women, including:

Spotting and minor cramping 6-12

days after conception
Swollen, sore or tingly breasts
Fatigue
Low blood sugar
Low blood pressure
Boost in blood production
Nausea (morning sickness)
Frequent urination
Constipation
Mood swings
Headaches and back pain
Dizziness and fainting
Missed period

Many of these symptoms are also symptoms of

other conditions, such as PMS or premenopause. However, if you suspect you are
pregnant and are presenting these symptoms,
the next step is to take a pregnancy test.

What now?
Once you confirm your pregnancy, there
are several options available these
options include:
Carrying the baby to term and keeping it
Carrying the baby to term and giving it
up for adoption
Abortion
You can receive counseling to determine
which course of action is best for you
based on your individual needs. Thats
where Planned Parenthood comes in.

Options
Parenting
Talk about it.
Although you are the only one who can make
the final decision, it is healthy to discuss your
options with a trusted friend or family member.
It is important that this person is supportive of
whatever decision you make and will not try to
influence your decision. Here at Planned
Parenthood, we have trained employees on
hand to assist you with this process. They will
discuss all your options with you. It is important
to take your time in choosing an option, but you
should contact a center as soon as you think
you may be pregnant in order to give yourself
more time to make a decision and also to get a
prenatal care plan if you intend to keep the
baby.

Who can you trust?

It is important to know that you are safe when
discussing your pregnancy options. Be aware
of crisis pregnancy centers, which are fake
clinics run by people who are anti-abortion.
These clinics are known to try to scare women
out of their third option. Many women turn to
their partner, but remember that the ultimate
decision is yours and your partner shouldnt be
the deciding factor.

Parenting has many pros and cons. Parents

often say that being a parent helps them find a
deeper understanding of themselves and
enhances their lives. However, children are
expensive and time consuming, and parents
often find it hard to support their children. It
may be helpful to talk to some other parents
when deciding if you want to be one or not, as
they can give you some honest input on how
parenting has affected their lives.

Abortion
Often abortion is chosen if a woman feels a
pregnancy will negatively impact her life, or if
she feels she is not ready for parenting.
Abortions are a safe option as little to no health
risks. However, the risks increase the longer
you wait, and the abortion must occur during
the first trimester, so be sure to examine your
options early on in your pregnancy. If you are
not comfortable with talking to family or friends
about this decision, Planned Parenthood has
unbiased employees who can help you decide
whats best for you and your family.
Even if you are thinking about
abortion, it is important to start prenatal care in
case you decide against it because early care
can prevent complications for both the mother
and baby later in the pregnancy.
