Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

Course Description:

Students Responsibilities:

Application of design principles of visual communication with an introduction

to design process, methodology/theory and problem solving.

Attending each class is mandatory for students and the instructor; see page
2 for attendance/conduct policy. If you must miss a class, it is your own
responsibility to check with your classmates (at least 2) for class information.
The instructor will not repeat the lecture that you missed.

6 hours activity.
Prerequisites:

Student must receive C- or better from all the following 3 courses prior to
taking this class:
Art 150A: Intro to Design; Art 155A: Intro to Computer; Art 251A: Type I

It is important for designers to demonstrate excellent penmanship. This

class is an excellent environment to exercise your penmanship. Therefore,
students are required to take notes manually in the class. Notes should be
included in your process book. Use of any form of camera to photograph the
instructors notes on the white-board is prohibited.

Please note that this course is for the art department majors only.

Check your campus e-mail least twice a week for additional assignment
sheets, presentation instructions, class info, and etc

Objective/Learning Goals:

Comprehend how to research complex visual problems through their abilities

to critically think and generate conceptual paradigms (frameworks).

Always use campus e-mails as online forms of communication with the

instructor and make sure the attachments are less than 2MB. E-mails from
unauthorized senders will be filtered as spam messages.

Retain the ability to conceptualize complex type and image solutions

through a metaphorical thinking process.

Bring your crit board (white foamboard 18w X 24 h) and tape your crit
materials on the board prior to the crit.

Demonstrate a sound understanding of image and symbols in the graphic

interpretation of information to evoke attitude response.

Good designers always present their best work and solutions rather than
problems. If your crit review project doesnt reach the instructors expectation, you will receive a final grade for the project on the crit day.

Understand the relationship of form and content in the construction of

meaning; retain the ability to develop complex comprehensives within visual
communications.
Retain the ability to translate basic conceptual and two/three-dimensional
design principles through methodology and processes. This encompasses
the manipulation/analysis of visual systems, a thorough understanding of
type and image relationships, and experiencing image creation techniques.
Demonstrate the ability to control basic grid systems as a means of organizing
information and establishing typographic hierarchy.
Develop polished presentation skills, both visually and verbally.

Textbooks:

1. Type and Image, Meggs

2. Typographic Design: Form and Communication, 4th or 5th edition, Carter,
Day, Meggs
Craft Tools/Materials:

Cutting board, steel ruler, architects scale in imperial units, x-acto knife (or
utility knife), pencil, eraser, rubber cement pickup, bone folder, double sided

system:

C. For project submission mounting:

Breakdown of all course activities:

Total (100)= Midterm Review (42) + Finals Review (42) + Quiz (16) Attendance (0)

Method of Instructions/Grading:

All work will be reviewed in class only. The instructor will not review or
accept your work online.
Instruction for finished project comps will be given per each project before
the presentation day. Students should follow this instruction for final project
due day. All work need to be done prior to the class meeting. Taking class
time to complete your last minute work is absolutely unacceptable.
No redo or a second submission for projects after the due day unless
requested by the instructor. If you are absent on a project due day due to
a compelling reason, you may only submit your project along with a proper
note during the next class meeting.
There will be lectures based on textbooks or additional handouts, design
samples, or demonstrations on computer/craft techniques in class.
Student will receive a grad card for each project (grade card sample on right).
Graphic designers are image makers. Therefore, it is the department policy
that you must have full ownership of the work when you show your homework in class. We do not practice any use of stock photos or stealing others
work (via the internet of print) as your own creation. Fail to comply this
department policy is considered academic dishonesty and will be disciplined
by the University Judicial Affairs, no exceptions.
Must use text (copy) that describes the actual content for each project.
We do not use lorem ipsum (placeholder text) in this class. This allows you
to expand/strengthen your typographic skills during the design process.
In addition, you would never find a design publication that doesnt contain
actual text message for the purpose of visual communications in the real
world. All writing involved for each project should be approved by the
University Writing Center prior to placing the text on your design work.

Final grade (letter grade)= a total of all assignments.

Attendance/Conduct Policy:

Design productivity and professional growth call for personal high standards,
a professional context and environment. Therefore, I will require and monitor
the following:

Attendance in this class is mandatory.

Speak with your study buddies, not the instructor, for any missing
lectures.
Present proper written documentation (doctors note, jury duty,
mechanics receipt and the like) during the next class meeting if you
are absent. This document will only be accepted during the next class.
Any absence without proper note= -10 final points.
Arriving later than the instructor without compelling reason is considered absence. However, you are allowed to use alarm/traffic/parking/
etc... as excuse for late arrival only once each quarter.
Excessively late/disappearing during class/take off early (2 trades= 1
absence= -5 final points).
Any medical reasons as result of missing more than 3 classes please
file petition to withdraw the class during week 8.
After 3 absences (with or without notes) you will receive WU as final
grade because you are no longer able to catch up with your peers.
Going in and out of the classroom during the class is disruptive. When
a true emergency occurred, please advise the instructor. There will be
a 15-minute break for every 45 minutes in class.
Fail to participate university finals exam meeting= -10 final points.
Courteous and ethical conduct.
Personal responsibility for success.
Matching work hours: consistent effort, contribution and preparation.
Attendance, promptness, and productive use of studio/lab time.

Work Environment Policy:

To maintain/respect the classroom as a professional, safe work environment,

I will enforce the following restrictions:

Clean up your surroundings and return classroom furniture to its

original position each time.
No consumable: food (including gums), drinks, smoking.
Any food trash should be deposit in trash cans outside the classroom
for safety reason.
No internet access for personal usage during class meetings.
No personal music devices or music playing during lecture.

No personal electronic devices: cell phones, text messages or camera

must remain off for the whole time while in the classroom. This means
you are not allowed to photograph any work samples from other
designers and you need to take notes by hand. (I believe you are able
to do that.)
No personal transportation devices in use during class.
Please keep your family, pets and friends at home.

Penalties for Academic Dishonesty

It is the university policy to report all academic dishonesty matters without

exceptions. The following conducts are considered academic dishonesty:

Providing false information on your academic record.

Use work from other designers (such as images from the internet,
scanned or traced images from any print publications, etc...) as your
own project.
