2. Legal Hold
Bynow,mostcorporateemployeesareawarethatemailshouldnotbeconsideredprivate.Infact,
emailhasbeensubpoenaedforcourtcases.

Butcorporatepoliciesthatoutlineconflictingmessageretentiondictatesmakebalancinglegal
requirementsagainstincreasingstoragecosts,achallenge.Inresponse,Exchangenowhasa
legalholdfeaturethatallowsfortheretentionofemail,evenifarchivedordeleted.

3. Multi-Mailbox Search
Asatieintothelegalholdfeature,themultimailboxsearchfunctionwillallowforsearches
spanningmultipleusersinboxes.Thisfeaturewillproveusefulforenterprisesthatneedtosearch
theirentiresystems,perhapsbasedoffafewkeywords.

4. Exchange Control Panel

ExchangeControlPanel.Thisisanew,userlevelandadministratormanagementtoolthatlets
usersperformbasictasks,andallowsadminstoperformtasksremotely,usingawebinterface.

costs.

5. Database Availability Groups

Exchange2010introducestheconceptofdatabaseavailabilitygroups.Theideaistoallowyouto
designatemultipleserverstohostcopiesofindividualdatabases.Thisisafeaturedesignedto
provideforatypeofautomaticbackup.Ifonedatabasefails,datacaneasilyberestoredfromone
oftheavailabilitygroups.

InpreviousExchangeversions,afailurewouldaffectanentirecluster.Butwiththe2010update,a
databasefailurewillbecontainedtoonlythatdatabase.

7. Voice Mail Transcription

Insteadofstoringemailmessagesonlyassometimesdifficulttoaccessattachments,Exchange
2010nowhasaspeechrecognitionenginethatwillautomaticallytranscribevoicemailmessages.
Themessagewillstillappearasanattachment,whichwillallowforindexing,butwillincludea
writtentextpreviewofthemessage.

8. Call answering rules

Atsomepoint,weveallencounteredanautomatedattendant,directingustopressanoptionon
ourkeypadstohandlecallrouting.Thisniftyfeaturehasfounditswaytotheenduser.
CallAnsweringRulesallowsemployeestosetuptheirowncallroutingrules.Forinstance,theycan
sendcertaincallstovoicemail,totheircellorhomephones,ortoringthroughtotheirdesks.

9. Personal Archive
UsersinthisversionofExchangehaveanewtooltohelpmanageoftenunrulyinboxes.
Personalarchiveallowsforessentiallytwomailboxesaprimarymailboxandanarchivemailbox.
Thearchiveisasreadilyavailableandeasilybrowsedastheprimaryinbox.

10. Retention Policies

WiththenewretentionpoliciesinExchange2010,userscandeterminewhenmessagesshould
expire.Thiscanbedoneatthefolderorindividualmessagelevel.
Permissionscanbetrickyanddeterminingresourcesaccessrequirementscanbeatime
consumingactivity.However,usingrolebasedaccesscontrolgreatlysimplifiesthisprocess.
Ratherthanassigningpermissions,anadministratorcanindicatetasksthataresourcewill
perform.Theappropriatepermissionswillthenbeassignedautomatically.
