NOTE: I have not yet wrote the beginning of the story.


At the moment, the script starts at the middle. Here is
what you need to know:
Billy Mathews is a wanted outlaw in Texas, 1866. 10
years ago, a man raped his sister, Katie, and fleed
before he could be hanged. Now back to the present,
Billy has been arrested in the small town of Dawsbury.
These are the events that follow.
INT. SHERRIF'S OFFICE - AFTERNOON
BILLY sits in a ramshackle holding cell. A rope is tied
around his wrists. He hears whispers of a man from the next
cell over:
CELLMATE
Hey boy. What you in here for?
BILLY turns around and sees a skeletal looking man leaning
over to him. He ignores him.
CELLMATE
I bet it was something real bad.
Real nasty. You look like the type.
BILLY continues to ignore him.
CELLMATE
I got thrown in here over some
lousy fuckin' hooker. Bitch tried
to rob me while I was takin' a
piss. Good thing I caught'er. Saw
her diggin' in my pants. So I
knocked her sideways, kicked'er in
with my boot. Some fucker caught me
and went and called the sherrif.
Then he found out I was wanted for
them train robberies. Now I'm in
here.....all cause of some damned
SOILED DOVE!
SHERRIF HILL
(from his desk)
Ya'll shut the fuck up down there!
RIO is unaffected by SHERRIF HILL.
CELLMATE
So what, you one of them retards?
Or you just don't like talkin'?
BILLY
I don't got nuthin' to say.
CELLMATE
Ooooh. Ain't much of a chatter huh?
One of them lone wolves? Don't like
to be disturbed none?
BILLY
That's right.

CELLMATE
That's fine. A lot of people don't
like the loners. Don't trust'em. I
don't mind 'em personally.
The CELLMATE leans closer.
CELLMATE
It's them ones who talk too much
you gotta worry about. The ones who
just like runnin' their mouths off
just for the hell of it. I know I'm
one to talk...I'm a big talker. But
if I wasn't me, and I met me, I
wouldn't trust me neither. By the
way, the name's Rio. What do you go
by?
BILLY
Rodriguez.
RIO
Shit, you don't look mexican to me.
BILLY
Rare breed.
RIO
So lemme ask you somethin'. Ever
heard of the Rattlesnakes?
BILLY
Nope.
RIO
Well I'ma get straight to the
point. Those'er my boys. You see,
tomorrow me and them was supposed
to nibble from this bank down the
way. They need me for it. So I
can't be in here. My partner Joey's
coming back for me, and bringing a
few others. So lemme ask you
something. You fixin' to get outta
here or what?
BILLY is finally interested in something RIO has to say.
BILLY
Yeah. You fixin' to get me outta
here?
RIO
If you play well with
others....well..I might be willin'
to letchu out wit me. You just
gotta help me.

BILLY
What makes you think you can trust
me?

RIO
I don't trust you. Hell, I don't
trust anybody. But if you lend a
hand, then you can go free. Now
don't that sound good?
BILLY
Depends on the hand you want lent.
RIO
Well here's the deal. When my boys
get here, they gonna come through
that door, pop that sherrif in the
dome, and grab them cell keys over
there.
RIO points to the cell keys on SHERRIF HILL'S DESK.
RIO
Now this is where you come in. Once
they let me out, I'ma cut you loose
and hand you a pistol. Now I'm
going to have to hope that once I
hand you this pistol, you won't
blow my brains out wit it.
BILLY
Won't that require some trust?
RIO
Well, I guess it does. I'm going to
have to trust in you. I know you
probably want to get out of here as
much as I do. If you help us make
it out of Dawsbury, you get your
freedom. What do you say?
BILLY
I say you've got yourself a hand.
CUT TO:
INT. DAWSBURY - NIGHT
In the distance, RIO'S GANG (3 men) saddle up into Dawsbury.
1st Man - JOEY BOYD: The leader. He's a built, tall, and
fairly handsome man.
2nd Man- CHARLES CALHOUN: A repulsive, dirty, hillbilly.
Missing a few teeth.
3rd Man- LITTLE GEORGE: Short man, but bulky as hell.

CUT TO:
INT. SHERRIF'S OFFICE - NIGHT
SHERRIF HILL sits in his desk chair, drinking a bottle of
whisky. He starts to antagonize BILLY, slurring his words.
SHERRIF HILL
I don't like the eyeball you giving
me boy.
BILLY
You ain't getting no eyeball from
me.
I don't like

town. Should
Sherrif Hill

SHERRIF HILL
your kind. Outlaws.
try to pull shit in my

In the background, DEPUTY HUGHES gets himself ready to


leave.
SHERRIF HILL
Yep, the king is in his throne,
sippin' on his ale.
HUGHES
I'm just bout ready to head out.
SHERRIF HILL takes a gulp of whiskey.
HUGHES
Hey Sherrif.....you sure you should
be drinking that much? One of these
fuckers in here might try to get
over on you.
SHERRIF HILL
I got an iron stomach son. Drinkin'
don't dull my wits none anyway.
HUGHES
Alright well...guess I'm leaving.
SHERRIF HILL
Night Hughes.
HUGHES
Night.
EXT. DAWSBURY - NIGHT
HUGHES walks out the front door. The GANG OF MEN notice
HUGHES outside, and ride toward him.

INT. SHERRIF'S OFFICE - NIGHT
SHERRIF HILL takes another gulp of whiskey. He gets up and
walks over to the cells. He starts to laugh.
SHERRIF HILL
I bet ya'll wanna kill me, huh?
RIO
No Sherrif, we don't wanna kill ya.
SHERRIF HILL
I bet if you had the chance, you'd
blow my fuckin' head off. Don't get
your hopes up son, ain't nobody
killing Sherrif Hill.
RIO
(grinning)
We'll have to see about that.
SHERRIF HILL laughs in his face. He sits back down.
INT. DAWSBURY - NIGHT
The gang of men have now reached HUGHES. HUGHES looks
frightened.
HUGHES
Can I help you boys with something?
JOEY cocks his pistol...
BANG! HUGHES is shot in the head. He falls back on the front
door of the Sherrif's office. Blood spurts from his skull.
INT. SHERRIF'S OFFICE - NIGHT
The sound of the gunfire roars from outside.
SHERRIF HILL
What in the hell is that?
SHERRIF HILL rises out of his chair, whiskey in hand...
He walks over to the front door...
He GRABS the door knob....
HUGHES dead body tumbles into the room. The GANG OF MEN is
revealed behind him.
The MEN all UNLOAD onto SHERRIF HILL.
BULLETS FLY at him. The whiskey bottle SHATTERS.
SHERRIF HILL is shot several times. Blood bursts from his
insides. He drops to the ground.

SHERRIF HILL lays dead on the floor in blood and whiskey.

CUT TO:
INT. HOME OF MARSHALL TAYLOR
Near the Sherrif's office is the home of Marshall Taylor. As
he lays in bed with his wife, both of them are awoken by the
gunshots.
MARSHALL TAYLOR
What in god's name was that?
MARSHALL'S WIFE
That was a gunshot!
The MARSHALL pounces out of the bed. He goes over to his
guncase next to the bed, and grabs his rifle.
BACK TO:
INT. SHERRIF'S OFFICE - NIGHT
The 3 men walk into the building.
RIO
Damn! Ya'll fucked sherrif up.
JOEY
(to the men)
Help me move these bodies.
The MEN tend the bodies. JOEY drags HUGHES in. CHARLES AND
LITTLE GEORGE drag the sherrif in.
Right at that moment...
The MARSHALL comes SPRINTING toward them, rifle in hand. He
fires at them. None of the bullets hit.
The MEN manage to make it inside. JOEY locks the door.
CHARLIE
That was damn close.
BILLY observes the men. He recognizes CHARLIE.
FLASHBACK:
BILLY plays back the crucial moment in his head. The rape of
his sister KATIE. He looks into the face of the man who did
it..

CAMERA MOVES ONTO
CLOSE UP: CHARLES CALHOUN'S FACE
END OF FLASHBACK:
CHARLES CALHOUN is the man who raped KATIE.
BILLY STARES HIM DOWN.
RIO
What took so long? Been waiting all
damn night for ya'll to show up.
Hurry up and get me outta here Joe.
JOEY
Just be glad we're here to bail
your ass out. Where are the keys to
the cell?
RIO
Over there, on the sherrif's desk.
JOEY grabs the keys. He goes over and lets RIO out. He
reaches in his boot and takes out a bowie knife. He cuts RIO
loose. BILLY continues to stare down CHARLES.
CUT TO:
INT. DAWSBURY - NIGHT
Most of the townspeople have came out of their house. They
all talk to each other in panic. The Marshall marches down
the streets yelling:
MARSHALL TAYLOR
Anyone who can handle a weapon,
hurry over to the Sherrif's office!
BACK TO:
INT. SHERRIF'S OFFICE - NIGHT
RIO
Hey, I'd like ya'll to meet a new
friend of mine. Name's Rodriguez.
(To BILLY)
That there's Joey, Charles, and
Little George. Short fucker ain't
he?
LITTLE GEORGE
That's alright. Call me short. Last
time I'm risking my tail to help
your ungrateful ass again.
CHARLES
Why's that boy starin' at me?

RIO
I don't know, he's a lil oddball. I
told I'd let him out if he helps us
out.
CHARLES
I reckon this boy better stop
starin' at me.
RIO
Hand me them keys Joe. And that
other pistol on your belt.
JOE hands him the keys to the cell, and his extra pistol.
CHARLES
Don't let that nutcase out. He's
starin' at me all crazy-eyed.
RIO
Relax, he don't bite.
LITTLE GEORGE
(to JOEY)
We should've just left his ass in
jail. Dumb son-of-a-bitch...
JOEY peaks out of the front door. He's immediately shot at,
with a bullet missing him by an inch. The MARSHALL is
outside, and has gathered 15 men together. All of them armed
with guns, pointed at the building. He fires back at them.
He doesn't hit a thing. He slams the door and locks it
again.
JOEY
Marshall's outside. A bunch of men
withem.
RIO
Alright Rodriguez, remember what we
talked about.
RIO lets BILLY out of his cell.
RIO
(to JOEY)
Hand me that bowie knife.
JOEY hands it to him. RIO cuts BILLY loose.
RIO
Charles, my friend here needs a
gun.
CHARLIE
I'm not givin' him my goddamn gun!

RIO
You got a rifle hanging over your
back. Give him the pistol.
CHARLIE
(mumbling under breath)
Horseshit...
CHARLIE walks up to BILLY and before he even gets the
chance...
BILLY SNATCHES CHARLIE'S gun out of its holster.
BILLY GRABS CHARLIE and points the gun to his head.
RIO
Woah, woah! Rodriguez what the fuck
you doin'?!?
BILLY
Shut the fuck up.
CUT TO:
INT. DAWSBURY - NIGHT
The MARSHALL is outside of the building, his men all
awaiting for the gang to make a move.
MAN #1
Just what in the hell is goin' on?
MARSHALL TAYLOR
Some boys came in town and started
killin'. They killed the sherrif,
and Hughes too.
MAN #1
Jesus Christ...
MARSHALL TAYLOR
(to all of his men)
Everybody watch that door! If
anyone comes out, shoot on sight.
INT. SHERRIF'S OFFICE - NIGHT
BILLY is furious. Everyone in the room is shocked and
confused.
CHARLIE
What in the hell did I do to this
bastard?
RIO
What in the hell did you do to that
bastard?

10.
JOEY
Hey, now don't kill'em alright?
Just calm down.
BILLY
Don't tell me what to do.
JOEY
I ain't tellin' you....it's more of
a suggestion.
BILLY
Anyone try anything, and I kill
this fucking hick.
