PREPARE YOUR SURFACE

Step 1:

Remove existing Floor covering

Set any raised nail heads or screw heads
Remove paint over spray
Remove dust
Use wood screws to secure loose or squeaky areas.

Step 2:

Measure depth of existing bullnose over hang

Measure the left and right side
Transfer measurement to top of tread and place a pencil mark
Use a straight edge, level, or straight board to draw a line between the marks.
Cut off overhang on each step using a circular saw.
Finish up cut near wall using a hand saw, multi tool, or saw.
Remove existing nose.
Vacuum up any dust.

Step 3:

If existing nose was routed into the skirting, fill the hole with sandable,
paintable wood filler or white spackling for white skirtings.
Allow wood filler to dry and sand smooth.
Paint skirting
Paint risers if you are not re-facing them. If installing new primed white risers
paint them at this point.

Step 4:

Many laminates require two

assembled rows to cover the
tread and risers.
Assemble the laminate and
glue them together with a PVA
wood glue.
Allow glue to dry. This will
help keep the pieces together
when cutting
with your sliding miter saw.

INSTALLATION
Laminate Riser Install:

Start installing at bottom step and work to the top.

Use a tread tool to measure the width of the riser
Use the tread tool to transfer the mark onto the laminate plank
Use a sliding miter saw to cut the laminate to fit
Next measure the height of the riser with a tape measure
Transfer measurement to laminate.
Use a table saw to rip the laminate riser flush with the
top of the tread
Remove pad from the back of the laminate, and lightly
sand the back
Glue new laminate riser to the existing riser with a
urethane adhesive. Tack with finish nails
Fill nail holes with close matching wood filler

Laminate Tread Install

Measure from the edge of new riser or from existing riser if no new
riser is installed.
Measure 2 back from the riser and place a mark on the tread. Next, go to the
opposite end of the riser and again measure back 2 and place a mark on the
tread. Use a chalk line to pop a straight line between the two marks. The top
edge of the laminate flooring installed on the tread will stop at this mark.
Use a tread tool to measure the width of the tread.
Use the tread tool to transfer the measurement to the laminate.
Cut laminate with sliding miter saw.
Next, measure the distance from the next riser to the chalk line
Transfer measurement to the laminate, making sure that the section cut off will
be the groove side. The tongue side is needed for installing Flush stair nose.
Use the table saw to rip down the laminate cutting off the groove side.
Remove pad, and lightly sand back of laminate.
Dry fit to make sure the laminate fits, then glue with urethane adhesive.
Tack laminate with finish nails that will be hidden when installing the next riser.
Install next riser (Step one Riser installation) then install next tread. Continue
until all risers and treads are completed.
Use caulking to fill in any hair line gaps by the walls.

INSTALLATION
Flush Stair Nose Install:

Measure the width of the stair. The tread tool can be helpful here also.
Cut the stair nose with miter saw to fit width
Dry fit your cut to make sure it fits
A shim may be required to get the stair nose flush with the top of the flooring.
The lip of the stair nose will rest on the top of the laminate tongue.
Glue stair nose and shim (if needed) with a urethane wood glue, and tack with
finish nails. We suggest pre-drilling and hand nailing with 6d steel finish nails.
Continue until all steps are complete.
Fill nail holes with a close matching wood filler

Top Step Stair Nose Install:

We require the use of an overlap stair nose for the top step. When laminate
flooring is installed at the top hallway, a overlap molding is needed to allow the
flooring room to expand. Using a flush stair nose in this location can prevent the
flooring from being able to expand, which could potentially cause the flooring
to buckle.
If you install a flush stair nose at the top step you should separate the laminate
flooring in the hallway from the other rooms by using transition strips, this will
help minimize the floors expansion. You should also maintain a consistent
humidity level. High indoor humidity can lead to expansion in wood flooring.
By not installing a overlap molding at the top step you assume all risks involved.

Scotia Install:

Measure and cut scotia molding to the correct width of riser

Install under the flush stair
