APPLICATION FOR ADMISSIONS INTO UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES AND

NON DEGREE PROGRAMMES FOR THE
2015/2016 ACADEMIC YEAR
Sokoine University of Agriculture invites Applications from qualified Tanzanians and non-Tanzanians for
admission to the Degree, Diploma and Certificate programmes offered by the University in the academic year
2015/2016.
Applicants who have completed A level education and qualify to apply for degree programmes (Direct
Entry Scheme) shall apply direct to the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU); candidates who would
wish to apply through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) formerly known as Mature Age Entry shall also
apply through TCU. Applicants with Full Technician certificates (FTC) and Diploma qualifications shall
apply through National Council of Technical Education (NACTE). More information on mode of
application is available on TCU and NACTE websites. Those who wish to apply for Diploma and Certificate
programmes shall apply directly to the University.

A.

GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

From 2013 the National Examination Council of Tanzania (NACTE) has changed the grading system for
O level and A level National Examinations and therefore the admission requirements will be
provided basing on both old grading system for candidates who completed secondary education from 2013
and before and new grading system for candidates who have completed secondary education from 2014
onwards.
DIRECT STUDENTS: Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (C.S.E.E.) (Ordinary level) or
equivalent with passes in four relevant subjects AND two principal level passes in the Advanced
Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (A.C.S.E.E.) in relevant subjects that add up to a
minimum of 3.0 points for science and 4.5 for social science programmes. For science female candidates,
the cut off is 2.5 points (for the candidates who completed their A level in the year 2013 and before)
OR
Two Principal Level Passes that add up to a minimum of 4.0 points in the Advanced Certificate of
Secondary Education Examination (for the candidates who completed their A level in the year 2014)
EQUIVALENT STUDENTS: Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 and a minimum of
FOUR passes or THREE credits in relevant subjects in the certificate of Secondary School Education
Examination (CSEE; O-level).
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) CANDIDATES
Candidates with valid RPL certificate obtained after passing RPL examination relevant to the degree
programme being applied for.

B. SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Bachelor of Science in Applied Agricultural Extension:
Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Agricultural and Livestock fields already
working in extension field will be eligible if they have passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology or
Botany or Zoology or Science and Practice of Agriculture. This is a mid-level programme and is thus
not intended for A-level applicants.
2. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture General:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before

Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Chemistry, Biology/Botany, Physics/Mathematics and
Sciences and Practice in Agriculture in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education or its
equivalent
(ii)

Applicants who have completed in the year 2014

Two Principal passes (4 points) in Biology/Botany and Chemistry/ Physics/Mathematics/Science and
Practice in Agriculture.

(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Agriculture or related fields and THREE
credits or FOUR passes in relevant science subjects at O-level.
3. Bachelor of Science in Horticulture:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Botany/Zoology,
Mathematics, Geography and Sciences and Practice in Agriculture in the Advanced Certificate of
Secondary Education or its equivalent
(ii)

Applicants who have completed in the year 2014

Two principal passes (4 points) in Biology and Chemistry/Physics/ Mathematics, Geography/Science
and Practice in Agriculture.

(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Agriculture/Horticulture or related fields and
THREE credits or FOUR passes in relevant science subjects at O-level.
(4) Bachelor of Science in Animal Science:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Biology/Botany/Zoology/, Science and Practice in
Agriculture, Chemistry Physics or Mathematics in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education
or its equivalent.
(ii)

Applicants who have completed in the year 2014

Two principal passes (4 points) in Biology/Zoology and Chemistry/ Science and Practice in
Agriculture and a pass in Physics/Mathematics.

(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Animal Husbandry/ Animal Health/ Agriculture
or related fields and THREE credits or FOUR passes in relevant science subjects at O-level.
(5) Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Home Economics,
Mathematics, Food Nutrition, and Science and Practice in Agriculture in the Advanced Certificate of
Secondary Education or its equivalent
(ii)

Two principal passes (4 points) in Chemistry and Biology/ Physics/ Food and Nutrition/Home

(6) Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Studies:

Two principal passes (4 points) in Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry/Geography and at least a
credit pass at O-level or its equivalent in Physics and Chemistry/ Biology/Science and Practice in
Agriculture.

(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

Full Technician Certificate or equivalent qualifications with an average grade of C and at least C
grade in Mathematics
Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Agricultural Engineering or related fields with
a credit pass in Mathematics at O-Level or Equivalent.
(9) Bachelor of Science in Bioprocess and Post-Harvest Engineering:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal passes (3.0 points) in Mathematics and Physics / Chemistry /Geography in the
Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent and at least a credit pass at O level or
its equivalent in Physics and Chemistry/Biology/ Science and Practice in Agriculture in the Advanced
Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent
(ii)

Applicants who have completed in the year 2014

Two principal passes (4 points) in Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry/Geography and at least a
credit pass at O-level or its equivalent in Physics and Chemistry/ Biology/Science and Practice in
Agriculture

(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in any engineering-related field and a credit pass
in Mathematics at O-level or its equivalent
(10) Bachelor of Science in Irrigation and Water Resources Engineering:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i)
Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Advanced Level Mathematics and
Physics/Chemistry/Geography and at least a credit pass in Physics and Chemistry/Biology/ Science
and Practice in Agriculture at Ordinary Level Certificate of Secondary Education Examination or an
Equivalent Examination
(ii)

Applicants who have completed in the year 2014

Two principal passes (4 points) in Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry/Geography and at least a
credit pass at O-level or its equivalent in Physics and Chemistry/ Biology/Science and Practice in
Agriculture

(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

NTA 6 Certificate or equivalent qualification with an average grade of C and at least a C grade in
Mathematics
Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Agricultural Engineering or related fields and
a credit pass in Mathematics at O-Level or Equivalent.
(11) Bachelor of Science in Agronomy:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal passes (3.0 points) in Biology/Botany, and in either of the following: Chemistry,
Science and Practice in Agriculture, Physics/Mathematics, or Geography in the Advanced Certificate
of Secondary Education or its equivalent
(ii) Applicants who have completed in the year 2014
Two principal passes (4 points) in Biology/Botany and either of the following: Chemistry, Science
and Practice in Agriculture, Physics, Mathematics, or Geography
(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications
Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Agriculture or related fields and THREE

(12) Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness:

Two principal passes (4 points) in Economics/Mathematics/Geography/Commerce/Accounts/Physics/
Chemistry and Science and Practice in Agriculture/ Biology/ Zoology/Botany. Candidates must have
at least a pass in mathematics at O-level

Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Agriculture or related fields and THREE

subjects at O-level
(17) Bachelor of Tourism Management:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i)
Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal passes (3.0 points) in Biology, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Science and Practice
in Agriculture, Mathematics, and Food and Nutrition; Home Economics in the Advanced Certificate
of Secondary Education or its equivalent. The sum of points from at least two subjects should not be
less than 4.5. Candidates with principal passes in Economics, Commerce or Languages should in
addition have a pass in Biology at O Level

(ii)

Applicants who have completed in the year 2014

Two principal passes (4 points) in Biology/Geography/ Chemistry/Physics/Science and Practice in
Agriculture/Mathematics/Food and Nutrition/Home Economics. Candidates with principal passes in
Economics, Commerce or English/French/Spanish also qualify as long as they have in addition a pass
in Biology at CSEE.

(c) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Tourism, Hotel Management, Catering,
Nutrition, Home Economics, Agriculture, Education, Forestry, or Wildlife Management and THREE
credits or FOUR passes in relevant subjects at O-level
(18) Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal Level passes (3.0 points) in Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, Physics, Geography or
Science and Practice in Agriculture in the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education or its
equivalent
(ii)Applicants who have completed in the year 2014
Two Principal passes (4 points) in Biology/Zoology and Chemistry and a pass in Physics/
Mathematics/ Science and Practice of Agriculture at the ACSEE. A candidate who does not have a
pass in Physics at A-level must have at least a credit pass in Physics at O-level. Such candidates must
also have passes in Mathematics and English at CSEE (O-level) or equivalent
(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications
Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Animal Health/Animal Health and
Production,. A holder of such a diploma should have at least FOUR passes or THREE credits in
Biology/Zoology, Chemistry, Physics, Science and Practice of Agriculture and at least a pass in
Mathematics and English at O-level
Or
Holders of First Degree in Life Sciences
(19) Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Chemistry, Biology/Zoology/Botany, and the other in
Physics, Mathematics, Geography or Science and Practice in Agriculture in the Advanced Certificate
of Secondary Education or its equivalent. Of these, at least TWO must be passed at the Principal
Level and must include Chemistry and Biology/Zoology/Botany
(ii) Applicants who have completed in the year 2014
Two principal passes (4 points) in Chemistry and Biology/Zoology/Botany and a pass in
Physics/Mathematics/Geography/Science and Practice in Agriculture.
(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications
Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in Medical Laboratory Technology, Veterinary
Laboratory Technology, Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry, Animal Health, Animal Production,
Wildlife, Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry or Bee-keeping and THREE credits or FOUR passes in
Biology/Zoology and Chemistry/Physics/ Mathematics/ Science and Practice of Agriculture/
Geography at O-level.
(20) Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications
(i) Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Botany/Zoology, Advanced
Level Mathematics/Geography/Science and Practice in Agriculture in the Advanced Certificate of
Secondary Education or its equivalent. Of these, Chemistry is mandatory and must be passed at
principal level. Candidates without a Principal level pass in Advanced Level Mathematics should
have passed Basic Applied Mathematics at the subsidiary level

(iii)

Applicants who have completed in the year 2014

Two principal passes (4 points) in Chemistry and Biology/Mathematics Geography/ Physics/ Science
and Practice in Agriculture. Candidates without a pass in Biology and Mathematics at A- Level must
a credit in Mathematics at O-level

(b) Equivalent Entry Qualifications

Diploma Certificate with a GPA of not less than 2.7 in the fields of Physical, Chemical or Biological
Sciences. Passes in Chemistry and Mathematics at O-level and Diploma level are mandatory
(21) Bachelor of Science in Informatics:
(a) Direct Entry Qualifications

Applicants who have completed in the year 2013 and before
Two Principal level passes (3.0 points) in Advanced Level Mathematics and any other Science

DIPLOMA IN RECORDS, ARCHIVES AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

At least ONE PRINCIPAL PASS or TWO PASSES at ACSEE adding up to 2.0 points in one of the
following: Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Science and Practice of Agriculture,
Geography, Economics, Commerce, History, English, French and Kiswahili
OR
Certificate in Records/Office Management or relevant disciplines with a minimum of second class
and O-level passes in at least three subjects.

(3) DIPLOMA IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

At least ONE PRINCIPAL PASS or TWO PASSES at ACSEE adding up to 2.0 points in one of the
following: Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Science and Practice of Agriculture,
Geography, Economics and Commerce.
OR
A certificate in information technology, engineering or other relevant disciplines from an accredited
institution and CSEE passes in at least three subjects one of which must be mathematics.
(4) DIPLOMA IN TROPICAL ANIMAL HEALTH AND PRODUCTION
Advanced Level passes in Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, Physics, Mathematics, Geography or Science
and Practice of Agriculture. The candidate must pass Biology/Zoology at Principal Level. Such
candidates must also have O-level passes in English and Mathematics.
OR
Appropriate certificates such as Certificate in Animal Health (Agrovet), Certificate in Animal Health
and Production (AHPC), Certificate in Agriculture and Livestock Production (CALP). A holder of
such a certificate should have a minimum of three credit passes at O-level in Biology/Zoology/
Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics at Tanzania Certificate of Secondary Education Examination
(CSEE) or equivalent
(5) DIPLOMA IN LABORATOTY TECHNOLOGY
A-level Certificate with passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. One of these
subjects must be passed at Principal level with a total of TWO points (C grade). Candidate with
Advanced Level passes in combinations without Biology must have passed Biology at credit level in
CSEE.
OR
Basic Technician Certificate from recognized institution.
OR
Certificate of Secondary Education with passes in Biology and Chemistry and Trade test Certificate
of at least grade II
(6) CERTIFICATE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
O-level certificate with passes in at least three subjects one of which must be mathematics

Diploma and Certificate applicants should apply directly to SUA by filling online application forms
which can obtained from www.suanet.ac.tz

Applications to all programmes must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of

twenty thousand Tanzania shillings only (20,000) for Tanzanians and USD 30 for Foreigner
applicants paid through SUA account (CRDB 01J1076769836)
All applications must be accompanied by genuine copies of relevant certificates, passport size
photograph. Applications without photocopies of certificates and bank pay slip will not be
considered
Applications with Foreign Secondary School Certificates should be accompanied with National
Examinations Council (NECTA) Equivalence translations
All applicants should meet the minimum stated qualifications. Applications which will not meet
stated qualifications will not be processed
