Five takhts of Sikhism

A philosophy and value well ahead of time when it was founded over 500
years, Sikhism is a religion practiced and followed by millions of people all
across the globe. The timeless and divine teaching of Sikhism has given a

Sikhism is based on truth, faith, believe, social justice, equality, value
based living and abandon superstitions & blind rituals.

Sikhism is a way of life and the five Takhts (Panj Takht) (basically 5
important Gurudwaras of Sikhism) are held in very high esteem in
Sikhism.

In Sikhism, guru is called Sachcha Patshah (true King) and his gaddi
(spiritual seat) Takht.

Of all the Takhts Akal Takht (the throne of the timeless God) situated
just opposite the gate of Harmandar Sahib - The Golden Temple, Amritsar
is the most important and was established by Guru Hargobind in 1609.

The main line of thought behind its establishment was that matter
regarding military and political policy should be discussed here..

Five Takhts

Sri Akal Takht Sahib

Part of the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab Sri Akal Takht
literally means Eternal throne. Situated opposite to the Harmandir Sahib,
Akal Takht was instituted with a special purpose.

While the Golden Temple stands for special guidance the Akal Takht
symbolizes justice and temporal activity.

During the eighteen century when Sikhs were indulged in a guerrilla war
in the forests, they used to gather at Akal Takhts during special occasions

like Diwali and Baisakhi. Oldest of all the Takht, the Akal Takht is the
supreme seat of power.

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib

Situated in the picturesque village of Talwandi Sabo near Bhatinda, Takht


Sri Damdama Sahib is a place of great virtue.

In 1705, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji compiled final edition of Guru Granth
Sahib also known as the Damdama Sahib Bir- Spiritual scripture of Sikhs,
who stayed in Talwandi Sabo for approximately a year.

This place holds a special place in every Sikhs heart.

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib is situated at Anandpur Sahib in Punjab and is


recognized as a birthplace of the Khalsa.

Many historical relics of Sri Guru Gobind Singh were associated with Sri
Keshgarh Sahib.

Guru Gobind Singh founded Khalsa in 1966.

Takht Sri Hazur Sahib

One of the most important Sikh pilgrimage, Takht Sri Hazur Sahib is
situated on the bank of the river Godavari, Maharashtra. Famed by the
name of Sri Gurudwara Langar Sahib, it is the place where Guru Gobind
Singh took his last breath.

The inner room of the Gurudwara is called Angitha Sahib and it is built
over the place where Guru Gobind Singh was cremated in 1708.

Takht Sri Patna Sahib

Situated in Patna, Capital of Bihar Takht Sri Patna Sahib (Takht Sri
Harmandir Sahib, Patna) enjoys the privilege of being the birthplace of
tenth Guru Gobind Singh.

He was born here in 1666 and spent his early childhood here.

Guru Nanak and Guru Tegh Bahadur honored this sacred place by visiting
it at different points of time.
