3.0 Link to Organizational Behaviour

3.1 Individual Mechanisms & Characteristics

| Rapunzel & Tangled

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

From the movie Rapunzel & Tangled, we discovered 5 theories or elements for the individual
mechanisms and characteristics, which are extraversion, agreeableness, Conscientiousness,
emotional stability, openness to experience and trust.
3.1.1 Extraversion
Extraversion is one of the personality dimensions describing someone who is sociable,
gregarious and assertive. An extroversion person likes to be with others, they seek out
stimulation and often perceived as full of energy. People with this kind of personality are
more enthusiastic and they are action-oriented people. They are likely to say Yes or
Lets go to search for excitement. Furthermore, people with this personality are likely to
talk, assert themselves and draw attention to themselves in a group.
Example from Scene & Description:
In this movie, we can see that Rapunzel has never got put from the tower since ever small.
Having spent all of her life isolated in a tower with litter else to do, she is proficiently
educated in literature, and talented in almost all areas such as music and baking and even
more advanced subjects like astronomy, as illustrated by her completely charted astronomical
patterns on her towers wall. But she is a person who likes to explore the world. Furthermore
, even she has never been in the outside world, she manages to get along with others very
fast. We can see this from, when Rapunzel, Flynn and Pascal leave the tower, whereupon
Flynn tries several tricks to get rid of Rapunzel and get his satchel back. One of these tricks
includes him taking Rapunzel to the local tavern, the Snuggly Ducking, where they encounter
just the kind of ruffians and thugs that Gothel has warned Rapunzel about. However,
Rapunzel manages to gain their friendship by explaining to them her dream of seeing the
floating lanterns and leads them to sing.
Lesson Learnt:

| Rapunzel & Tangled

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

From this, we can learn that we must learn to get along with people around us. Its doesnt
matter whether you have known them before or you expose to the new culture or not. This
will give a serious impact on an individuals behaviour How he or she get along with the
community.
3.1.2 Agreeableness
The agreeableness dimension refers to an individuals propensity to defer to others.
Agreeable individuals will value as they get along with others. They are usually considerate,
cooperative, friendly, warm and willing to compromise their interest with
other people. For example, agreeable individuals will say I feel others' feelings. On
The other hand, disagreeableness individuals is more likely to put their self-interest
above getting along with others. They generally less care about others well-being, and
they are cold.
Example from Scene & Description:
In this movie, we can see that in Maximus, a horse to the Captain of the Guards. Maximus
has made it's own personal mission to capture the wanted criminal, Flynn Ryder. He is
Flynns adversary from the very beginning and will stop at nothing to catch the slippery thief.
He is very intelligent and can apparently understand human speech, as his facial expressions
so obviously confirm. Although Maximus can be extremely tough, he has a large heart. In a
situation where he considerate Rapunzels wants. He cant say no to a young girl like
Rapunzel who calls him a big sweetheart, and even becomes best friends with his former arch
enemy Flynn Rider 24 hour. He cooperative and willing to compromise his interest in
catching Flynn Rider and they join together to take Rapunzel to the Kingdom for the lantern
festival. As the festival day continues, Maximus notices Flynns emerging feelings for
Rapunzel. During the Lantern ceremony, Maximus remains on the dock eating apples.
Afterward, Maximus witnesses Flynn being arrested and crying out Rapunzels name.

Maximus gathers that Rapunzel is in trouble, and knows that Flynn is probably the one who
can save her. Maximus heads to the Snuggly Duckling and recruits the Ruffians to help spring
Flynn from jail. Maximus then carries Flynn to Rapunzels tower to rescue her.
Lesson Learnt:
From this, we can learn that we considerate others peoples situation. Sometime we will
have our own rules of life. What must do and what cant do. So we have learned from the
movie that as a human being must consider people around us in most the situation. Besides
that, we have learned to be cooperative, friendly, warm and willing to compromise own
interest with others people.
3.1.3 Risk taking
It refers to a willingness to take the risks and any uncertainty. People differ in the willingness
to take chances, a quality that affects how much time and information they need to make a
decision. High risk-taking managers made more rapid decisions and used less information
than did the low risk takers.
Example from Scene & Description:
In this movie, we can see that in the character of Flynn Rider, who was running from the law
after stealing tiara of the lost princess and he also had deserted his former partner The
Sabbington Brothers. He eventually met Rapunzel in the tower and to escape the guard
house, Maximus. Flynn is eventually forced to agree to Rapunzels request to take her to see
the yearly Festival of Lights in the exchange for the crown. During the climax, he tries to
make peace with Sabbington Brothers by giving them the crown and tries to leave them. But
things change, where Flynn knocked unconscious and tied to a boat, which is set to sail
toward the kingdom. When he was in jail, he realises that Rapunzel is in trouble and he took
the risk with Maximus. With help of the Pub Thugs and Maximus he was able to go back to
the tower and save Rapunzel.

| Rapunzel & Tangled

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

Lesson Learnt:
From this we can learn that, we must have the courage and determination to take risks even
though it's a small matter or big ones. In any organization we as manager, we must be willing
to take a risk in almost all the decision to be made regarding the organization's future.
3.1.4 Trust
Improving performance and commitment in the workplace, trust defined as the willingness to
be vulnerable to an authority based on positive expectation about the authoritys actions and
intentions. Trust is the primary attribute associated with leadership, breaking it can have
serious adverse effect on a groups performance. Followers who trust a leader is confident
their rights and interests will not be abused. People are unlikely to look up to or follow
someone they perceive as dishonest or likely to take advantage of them. Thus, as you might
expect, transformational leaders to generate higher levels of trust from their followers, which
in turn is related to higher levels of team confidence and, ultimately, higher level of team
performance.
Example from Scene & Description:
In this movie, we can see that in the character of Rapunzel that, even though she has
uncertainty feeling after she left the tower finally with excitement to see the world. But she
confronts and reveals herself against the Mother Gothels wish of her returning to the tower
after a short journey with Flynn Rider. She trusted Flynn Rider even though she newly got to
know him. Flynn tries several tricks to get rid of Rapunzel and get his satchel and the tiara
back. One of the tricks includes him taking Rapunzel to the local tavern, the Snuggly
Duckling, where they encounter just the kind of ruffians and thugs that Gothel has warned
Rapunzel about. He tried to fool Rapunzel but failed and at the she still trusted and followed
him in order to see the Festival of Lights.

| Rapunzel & Tangled 10

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

During the climax of the story, he saw the Stabbington Brothers on the other side of the lake,
existing without the knowledge of Rapunzel. He assures her everything is fine and quickly
takes the boat to where the brothers were waiting. He then took the satchel and walks off into
the fog, promising to return. Rapunzel becomes worried as Eugene leaves, and she thinks
deeply about Gothel's warnings. After some moment of waiting Rapunzel figured he was
returning in the fog and sighs with relief that did not take the tiara and desert her. But the
figures actually turn to be The Stabbingtons Brothers and they told Rapunzel that Eugene has
actually left her. At first she did not believe but they showed her a boat sailing across the lake
towards the kingdom. From this scene, Rapunzel almost lost her trust to Eugene.
Lesson Learnt:
From this we can learn that, we must trust some people does matter in what kind of situation
is. But trusting someone is also depends on how they treat us and we can't judge by their face.
An employee who trusts a manager is confident their rights and interests will not be abused.
Breaking the trust can lead to many organization disputes and new implication may arouses.
3.2 Group Mechanism
3.2.1

Informal Groups

Informal groups are natural formation in the work environment that appears in response to the
need of society contact.
Example from Scene & Description:
From the story, when Flynn was in prison, and he was very worried about Rapunzel,
Maximus gets the bar thugs to come and help him break Flynn out when he is taken to be
hanged. The Pub Thugs and Maximus arrive and help Eugene as informal group or natural

formation of their group in order escape Eugene from the prison, then he and Maximus rush
to save Rapunzel.
Lesson learnt:
An informal group will form spontaneously whenever a group of human wanted to response
to the need of society or whenever emergency occurs.
3.2.2 Group development (The Five Stages Model)
3.2.2.1 Forming Stage
Forming Stage is characterized by a great deal of uncertainty about the groups purpose,
structure, and leadership. In this stage, every members of group will test the water to
determine what type of behaviors are acceptable.
Example from Scene & Description:
After Mother Gothel bluntly refuses, and orders Rapunzel never to ask to leave the tower
again. She instead asks her mother to buy her paints that she has to travel three days to get.
She consents regardless in her relief that Rapunzel has changed her mind from the lights.
That same day, Flynn Rider, a charming and handsome thief, stole the crown from the palace
with his two thug friends, the Stabbington brothers. However, after abandoning them and
stealing the jewels for himself, he is chased down by a palace horse named Maximus.
Desperate to get away, he decides to use Rapunzel's tower as a hiding place after stealing the
crown jewels. Rapunzel captures him and holds Flynn hostage. She makes a deal with
Eugene to bring her to fulfill her dream to see the lanterns. Over here we can see that
Rapunzel trying to form a group or get partner to accomplish both their purpose which are
Rapunzels need is to escape from the tower and escort her to the festival whereas Eugene the
Flynn Riders need is to obtain the satchel containing his stolen jewels.

Lesson learnt:

| Rapunzel & Tangled 12

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

Before an individual of group wanted to form their group, they need to have an objective that
they need to fulfill so that forming stage will be orderly organize.
3.2.2.2 Storming Stage
During this stage members will accept the existence of the group but resist the constrains
which imposes on personnel member where intragroup conflict will probably occur. The
conflict will over when who will control the group was appointed. When this stage is
complete, there will be a relatively clear hierarchy of leadership within the group.
Example from Scene & Description:
Although group of Rapunzel and Eugene had agreed to help each other but conflict still occur
when Rapunzel still being confuse about the promise she make with her mother with her
biggest dream of her life to see the lantern at the castle. Whereas the other conflict is Flynn is
making many attempts to scare Rapunzel out of the deal so that he doesn't have to be her
escort. One of these attempts being that he forces her into a rough restaurant called "The
Snuggly Duckling" filled with horrible bar thugs, and yet tries to pass it off as a five star
joint. However, his plan back fires when the thugs share in Rapunzel's desire to live her
dream, and join in song. Eugene decides to lead Rapunzel to go to see the lantern after she
decides to share the secret of her magical glowing hair, causing her to remember its ability.
Rapunzel illuminates the cavern with her power, much to Eugene's astonishment, allowing
them to claw their way out through a small hole in the bottom of the pool. After that, both of
them get a clear hierarchy of leadership to accomplish their goals.
Lesson learnt:
The appointed leader must play his/her leadership roles so that the group members are not
confuse in achieving groups goals.

3.2.2.3 Norming Stage

| Rapunzel & Tangled 13

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

In the norming stage, the group has begun to be effective. The focus of each individual is on
"how can I help the group?" Because of this, there is increased cohesion and more
collaboration. Trust begins to emerge and differences are appreciated. The issues become how
to strengthen relationships, open communication and provide positive and constructive
feedback. The team is now focusing on cooperation. The leader's task is to support the group
and its members and the group's task is to communicate and ensure the flow of data.
Example from Scene & Description:
In this movie, we can see that the close relation between Rapunzel and Eugene has develop
when Rapunzel sweeps across the way with her long hair as a rope/swing to save Eugene
after the bar thugs show Flynn and Rapunzel a secret passage in the back to help them escape.
Palace horse Maximus is able to uncover it though, and follows after them with the guards.
Rapunzel and Flynn make it outside onto a cliff where they are cornered by the guards. Flynn
knocks them out with a frying pan, and. She does the same for Flynn, until Maximus destroys
a water tower and causes the whole area to be flooded. From this scene also the
characteristics of the Norming Stage has develop where the cohesion between Rapunzal and
Eugene increased during the moment they were escaping from the Palace horse Maximus and
the guard. Both of them also collaborate together when they were trapped in a cavern,
character of Emerging trust do happen when Eugene shares that his real name is actually
Eugene Fitzherbert and Rapunzal also shares a secret, confessing that her hair glows when
she sings.
Lesson Learnt:
In the process of forming a effective group there will be some stages need to be passed
through. Therefore as a member of a group we should follow the correct flow in order to
achieve the goal and only voice out dissatisfaction when there are problem occurs.
3.2.2.4 Performing

| Rapunzel & Tangled 14

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

At this point, the group is asking "How can we do our best?" and is filled with enthusiasm
and focused on creative problem solving. Characteristics include harmony, productivity,
effective problem-solving and full development of the potential of the group and the
individuals in the group. Leadership is shared and participative and the leader's role is
delegation.
Example from Scene & Description:
From this movie, Eugene started to realize his role as leader and perform
his duty which is bring Rapunzel to see the lantern after Rapunzel heals
Eugene's hand, which was injured in their escape, with her hair and
explains that if her hair is cut, it loses its power and turns brown.
Evidently, Gothel had told her that people tried to steal the power when
she was born, and that's why she was kept in the tower. Eugene, in return,
says that he was an orphan, a young boy with nothing, and he was
inspired by a book he read as a child, The Adventures of Flynnagan Rider,
about a rogue who was rich, good with the ladies, and could do whatever
he wanted that night, after that night E realize how important it is to bring
R to see the lantern at the caslte since she never go out of that tower
before.
Lesson learnt:
As in a group each member has to show their performent so that the given
task is done well. Therefore the characteristics in the Performing Stage
should be applied such as be a productive member and able to solve

| Rapunzel & Tangled 15

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

problem. Besides that, as a member of the group we must able to share

and participate in leadership.

3.2.2.5

Adjourning Stage

Is a wrapping up activities and preparing to disband. Project teams exist

only for a fixed period, and even permanent teams may be disbanded
through organizational restructuring. As team leader, your concern is both
for the team's goal and the team members. Breaking up a team can be
stressful for all concerned and the "adjourning" stage is important in
reaching both team goal and personal conclusions. The breakup of the
team can be hard for members who like routine or who have developed
close working relationships with other team members, particularly if their
future roles or even jobs look uncertain.
Example from Scene & Description:
For every task has its end it same goes to Rapunzal deals with Eugene
where their deal has come to the end after that evening, Eugene rows
Rapunzel out in a small dingy to the middle of an adjacent lake to gain a
good view of the lantern release and then Rapunzel gives back his Satche.
Lesson learnt:

| Rapunzel & Tangled 16

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

Group members must remember that every task given has the end
therefore they should give full effort to accomplish it.
3.2.3

Leadership

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and

directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. From this movie
we can see the Charismatic Leader( Eugene ) which gathers follower(Rapunzel) through dint
of personality and charm, rather than any form of external power or authority in order to
accomplish the objective(fulfill Rapunzels dream to see the lantern.)
Example from Scene & Description:
From this story, leadership can been seen from the character Eugene Fitzherbert or known as
Flynn Rider. Eugene was performing as a charismatic leader which is self-confident about his
personality and achievement oriented. For example, Flynn who feel that he as a leader should
trust Rapunzel by reveals his real name that is Eugene Fitzherbert, he also tell Rapunzel about
his life where he was an orphan, a young boy with nothing, and he was inspired by a book he
read as a child, The Adventures of Flynnagan Rider, about a rogue who was rich, good with
the ladies, and could do whatever he wanted. As a leader also he must make sure that their
achievements are oriented as their plan. That evening, Eugene leads Rapunzel to the palace
by rows Rapunzel out in a small dingy to the middle of an adjacent lake to gain a good view
of the lantern release, although he knew that taking Rapunzel to see the lantern that was near
the castle was a big risk to him who actually a thief. After he has fulfilled the need of
Rapunzel, she gives Eugene the tiara saying that she now trusts him. So from this we can see
that Eugene has done his job as a leader perfectly.
Lesson learnt:

| Rapunzel & Tangled 17

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

Being a leader is a important roles, therefore process of choosing a leader should done
properly so that a better group leader is chosen. However as a group member we must be a
good follower so that it is easy to achieve a goals.
3.2.4

Conflict and Negotiations

A conflict is processes that begins when one party perceives another party has or is about to
negatively affect something the first party cares about. Conflict may occur whenever
emotional antagonisms cause frictions between individuals or groups. Emotional conflict is
an Interpersonal difficulty that arises over feelings of anger, mistrust, dislike, fear,
resentment, etc.
Negotiations are process in which one party aggress to exchanges a product or services with
another party in return for something.
Example from Scene & Description:
Conflicts between Eugene and Rapunzal occur when one day,Flynn Rider, a charming and
handsome thief, stole the crown from the palace with his two thug friends, the Stabbington
brothers. However, after abandoning them and stealing the jewels for himself, he is chased
down by a palace horse named Maximus. Desperate to get away, he decides to use Rapunzel's
tower as a hiding place after stealing the crown jewels. Rapunzel captures him and holds
Flynn hostage and in order to ends this conflicts Rapunzal negotiate with Eugene until he
agrees to help her escape the tower and escort her to the festival in exchange for the satchel
containing his stolen jewels.
Lesson learnt:
Whenever there are conflicts in a group. The group member must stand up and play a roles to
end up the conflicts by negotiating with parties of interest.

3.3 ORGANIZATION SYSTEMS LEVEL

| Rapunzel & Tangled 18

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

The movie Rapunzel & Tangled emphasize four main organization theories, which are
Human resources policies and practices, organization structure and design and also the
organization culture.
3.3.1 Organization Culture
Refer to a system of shared meaning held by members that differ the organization from other
organization. Hofstedes Framework is a theory of organization cultural dimension. This
framework consists of five values dimension, such as power distance, individualism vs.
collectivism, masculinity vs. femininity, uncertainty avoidance and also long term vs. short
term orientations.

Power distance; it refers to the extent in which a society accepts that power in
institutions and organizations is distributed unequally. Its a culture that endorse low
power distance expect and accept power relation that are more consultative or
democratic.

Individualism vs. Collectivism; it refers to the extent where individuals are integrated
into groups. They grouped together and process through an identical set of
experiences.

Femininity vs. Masculinity; definition of the distribution of emotional roles between

the genders

Example of Scene & Description.

Power distance From the movie Rapunzel & Tangled we can learn that the people in
country are very loyal and respect their king and queen. The residents respect and obey the
command of their leader and same goes to the captain of the guard and his team.
| Rapunzel & Tangled 19

ATW 251 Organizational Behavior

Group Assignment

Individualism vs. Collectivism - In the movie Rapunzel & Tangled, this dimension is applied
when the guards of kingdom are integrated in their group to find the royal thieves Flynn
Rider and Sabblington brothers. They set their own and identical aim to chase after the
thieves.
Femininity vs. Masculinity The character of Rapunzel represents the masculine culture. We
can see that when she sacrifices her own life to save her love of life Flynn Rider and this
scene shows that she place more value of relationship and quality of life.
Lesson Learnt:
From the Rapunzel & Tangled movie the lesson that we obtained is, as a citizen and
employee we should respect our leader or boss and take care the welfare of country or an
organization. We also absorbed the important of loyalty to the country and to our head of
country.
3.3.2 Human resources policies and practices
This aspect refers to the human being factor that will govern to the organization system level.
Human resources main functions are to recruiting, screening, rewarding and appraising. In
addition to the Hofstede Theory, the human factors also give an important impact to the
organization due to the diversification. Human resources also plays a big part in hiring a right
people for a task. Other than that, Humane Orientations refers to the degree to which a
society rewards individuals for being altruistic, generous, and kind to others.
Example of Scene & Description:
The movie Rapunzel & Tangled reflects many aspects of human resources policies and
practices. When the king recruit and hire the captain of guard and his team he plays role as a

human resource manager and he does his responsibility with due care. Other than that, he also
assigns Maximus the horse that very brave and smart enough to go after the royal thieves.
The rewarding system applies when then king granted seven day party to his people upon
returning of his beloved princess who were kidnapped by Mother Gothel. The king
acknowledge the hardship and worship that the peoples go through for the returns of their one

excel we should reward the related person in order to appreciate them and we also need to
acknowledge their service as well. We also get to know that reward not necessarily in term of
money but can be in other term also, as in Tangle the king reward seven days party to the
people of his country
3.3.3 Organization structure and design

Centralization Defines to which degree decion making concerns in the organization. In this
type organization, top managers makes all decision and lower level managers carries out the
responses.

4.0Conclusion
Based on the movie, we can find similar behaviors which occur in an organization and
the movie. As we watch the movie, we could conclude that the theories or elements for
individual mechanism and characteristics, which are extraversion, agreeableness,
Conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience and trust could be viewed
through the characters in the movie. By watching this movie we also learnt that working in
groups is more effective. Moreover every individual has to play his own role properly and
conduct their duty with full responsibility. We believe that human resources policy and
practices, organization structure and design and also the organization culture occur in this
movie which is same as the values in an organization.
Therefore everyone has to go through these processes of understanding the behaviors.
So it is important for each and every one of us to understand these theories and elements
because they are related to an organizational behavior and will be useful to us in the future.
Hopefully, by doing this assignment, we can learn and absorb the theories or elements found
in the movie as well as the other theories for using in the future.
