One is one and all alone is a science fiction.

The story takes place in the year

2045. The main character is a girl who is eleven. Her name is Trish. She is on
board a spaceship traveling to a planet called Trion. Her mother has gone to
Trion earlier. Her father is traveling with her in the spaceship. She is very
lonely because her father is very busy with work. She has no siblings and
friends. A computer becomes her diary. This computer teaches her language
and spelling. She also plays games. She loves to play a game called Pop Star
where she acts as a pop star. The computer teaches her about the word clone.
This gives her an idea. She makes a clone of herself and calls it Clo. Clo and
Trish are identical. They even think the same way. At first Trish was happy to
have Clo to accompany her but things began to change. Having a clone as a
companion was fun at first but soon the clone wore the girl down. She was so
fed up that she decided to get rid of the clone. However, there is a twist to the
story. As clones can think alike, it was Clo who actually got rid of Trish by
dumping her outside the space-ship as space rubbish. She then took on the
role of Trish for the rest of the journey.

The story is set in the year 2045. The main setting is the spaceship. The places
mentioned in the story are; the spaceship corridor, toilet, diner, cabin,
laboratory ( this is where Trish made her clone called Clo), store and the
disposal system.
Characters
Trish- She is the main character in the story. She is eleven years old and the
only child on board the spaceship. She has no friends, thus she feel lonely and
bored. She is intelligent and brave. She miscalculated her move as Clo is as
smart as her.
Clo She is clone. Her name is given by Trish. She is shrewd as she figured
out what Trish planned to do. She is quick thinking as she beats Trish at her
own game and she wins as she kills Trish. She has no regrets about taking
Trishs place and living as Trish.
Trishs Father- He is an Executive Officer of the spaceship. He is very busy
with work. Sometimes he has chocolate milkshakes at the diner with Trish.
Trishs Mum- She is as busy as Trishs father. She is highly qualified and
she is working at a space station in Trion. She will only be meeting Trish in
2047.
VoicePrinter- It is an intelligent computer. Trish can write her thoughts
and at the same time converse with the VoicePrinter. It is also a tutor that can
correct spelling and punctuation. It is a playmate for Trish. Trish can play
games and Trishs favourite game is Pop Star.
Themes
The theme tells the readers what the story is about. In this story, the author
has given us an insight on the importance of interpersonal relationships and
the dangers of cloning.
1. Interpersonal Relationship
Every child needs to know that when they have problems, there is someone
older around to help them solve their problems. Children must get guidance
and develop into balanced individuals, capable of making sound and morally
correct decisions. In Trishs case, she was the only child with her mum and
dad being very busy with work she needed friendship and someone to talk to.
2. Cloning can be dangerous
This story has shown us that cloning is possible whereby we can make another
human being identical to an existing living human being. This story ha also
shown us on how things can go wrong and have serious consequences. Clo
does not feel bad or remorse after she disposed Trish and she continues living
as Trish.
Moral Values
The values in this story relates to the characters. They actually relate to
qualities of the characters. The story teaches us to think carefully before we

take certain actions. Another lesson is that we must not be cruel to others.
1. Think before you leap
We must think carefully before we do anything. We must always think through
the problem. We should not make emotional decisions. We must try to be as
rational as we possibly can. Sometimes when we make emotional decisions,
they may not be rational ones. As a child Trish did not think of the
consequences of her actions. She thought they were harmless. In the end, Clo
outsmarts her and disposes her.
2. Family Bonding
Family bonding is very importance. Parents should try their best to guide and
nurture their children. The parents must be there as the child grows up and
learn habits and skills. In the story, Trish is left alone and yearns for her
parents company. She spends most of her time alone or with the machine- the
VoicePrinter. There is no true family bonding and there is also no bonding
with friends her age. She gets involved in cloning as there was no parental
guidance and she does not realize the implications.
Tone and Mood
The ordinary tone is felt in the beginning. This is when Trish says that she is
lonely and needs a companion. However, the tone changes to something out of
the ordinary. This is when Trish decides to make a clone. She makes another
Me in the BioLab. Later Trish decides to get rid of Clo but Trish gets killed
instead.
Language and Style
The author uses the pronoun I in the story. The style of writing is very
simple and straightforward. Nonetheless, there is a mixture of prose, diary
entries and dialogue. The diary entries are feelings and thoughts of Trish. The
dialogue is mainly between her and her VoicePrinter.
Literary Devices
Irony Page 52
-I cant stand the way Clos mind works. I cant Clos corny jokes, and her
dismal sulks. I cant stand Clos laugh or eating habits or her finger picking.
Trish finds Clos habits as irritating. She does not see that all those habits that
she hates are all her own habits. This is ironic.
Imagery Page 48-49
-Rolling bits of skin around a fingernail. and They writhe and fiddle all the
time.
Page 52-53
You open the hatch, put the thing you want to get rid of into the hole, and
whoosh its gone.
The readers can actually visualize what Clo is doing with her fingers.
This description of Trish opening the hatch and putting the thing into it is an
image of horror. It makes Trish seem so cruel. One is One and All Alone

AUTHOR Nicholas Fisk is the author of some 40 books,

including many science-fiction titles for older children. His real
name is David Higginbottom. He completed his first book at
the age of nine and earned money from his typewriter whilst
still at school. He dabbled in many fields of work such as
acting, playing jazz and illustrating and editing but, as he says
himself, "continued to write for anyone who would put me into

print." He has many interests including machines, drawing,

Victorian artists, growing things and playing the guitar. He
enjoys writing for young people but disagrees with the sci-fi
label. He says that his books are written from the point of view
of IF... "Almost any IF, from self-willed domestic robots to
fundamental natural changes in our condition, is a reasonable
starting point." He enjoys writing for young people because
they find it easier than adults to accept the unconventional.
SYNOPSIS "One is One and All Alone" by Nicholas Fisk is a
science fiction story, set in 2045. The main character is Trish,
an 11-year old girl who is the only child on a spaceship to
Trion. Her father is the Executive Officer of the spaceship and
her mother is in Trion helping to set up a space station. She
will only meet her mother in mid January 2047.After three
months, she feels lonely and bored as she does not have any
real friends to talk to except her private, multi-functional diary:
the Voice Printer (VP). VP is an intelligent computer which
keeps Trish entertained with its ability to perform many
functions. Through her dialogue sessions with VP, Trish learns
about clones and the cloning process. The idea of cloning
fascinates Trish and she soon decides to create a clone to
keep her company in the spaceship Bio lab without her
father's knowledge. She names her new identical twin "Clo"
and initially it becomes her perfect friend and companion.
They have fun playing and sharing their time together.
However, certain mannerism of Clo begins to irritate Trish as
the clone behaves and thinks like her. Soon they start to
argue and disagree with each other over trivial matters. The
last straw happens one night when Clo starts referring to
Trish's mum as her mum and this upsets Trish as she feels
her privacy is being invaded. The next day, Trish opens up her
diary and confides in VP that she does not like to be
"swamped, invaded and taken over." At that instant, she
decides to dispose off Clo forever through the "DISPOSAL"
hatch near her cabin. The story ends with a twist when it is
Trish who is disposed by Clo. Clo then assumes Trish's
identity and Trish's dad is not aware of the change at all. Clo
then enjoys being "one is one and all alone" and her new
lease of life as Trish in the spaceship. SETTING The story
takes place on board of a space ship in outer space. It takes

place in 2045. PLOT The plot compromises of the following

elements: 1.Exposition This part introduces the setting,
characters and the conflict that is to happen. We are being
introduced to the main character, Trish , who is on board a
spaceship on a mission to planet Trion. We learn that the story
takes place in 2045 and Trish is the only child on board the
spaceship. 2.Inciting Incident This refers to the initial event
which triggers the story. This happens when Trish talks to
VoicePrinter and learns about cloning and decides to clone
herself. 3. Rising Action Here we discover a series of events
that leads to the climax of the story. It refers to Clo's behaving
exactly the same manner as Trish such as wearing the same
clothes as Trish, repeating the same words Trish uses and
having the same thoughts. 4. Conflict This refers to the main
problem. Trish begins to feel uneasy about Clo. Trish feels
that Clo is invading her private thoughts about her mother.
This prompts her to reconsider Clo's existence. 5. Climax The
climax is the most exciting part of the story. This is shown
when Trish cannot tolerate Clo any longer and decides to
dispose her. 6. Falling Action These events occur after the
climax. Trish plans on how to get rid of Clo. She will use one
of the five hatches outside her cabin at night. She also plans
to write a note to accompany Clo. 7. Resolution This is the
conclusion of the story. Clo is the one who gets rid of Trish.
She now takes over as Trish and is happy and satisfied with
her decision. CHARACTERS The main characters are Trish,
Clo and VoicePrinter. The minor characters area Trish's father
and mother and other members on board the spaceship.
Trish : She is independent and can take care of herself on the
2-year space voyage. However, she feels lonely as she is the
only child aboard the spaceship. She is an active child,
interacting with the Voice Printer which is also her tutor and
converses with it as if it is another human being. She is smart
and can even clone herself with the help of VoicePrinter and
the Space Lab. She is single-minded and does thing on her
own without the help of an adult. That she did not consult her
father or thought through the ethical issues involved in cloning
may show some immaturity and irresponsibility. She is
adventurous and sort of ' push the envelope' with the
assistance and knowledge from the VoicePrinter. She thinks

she is smart until she was outwitted by her clone. The

Father :A minor character in this short story. He is always busy
as he is the executive officer of the spaceship. He is a multitasker, talking to Trish as well as perusing computer printouts
at the same time. He is caring and looks in on Trish once in a
while. Voice Printer : An informative machine, she provides all
the information that Trish requires. In fact it is her reference
source and tutor as well. It is a versatile machine and can
perform many functions. The Voice Printer is a loyal machine
and stays by the side of Trish at all times. Clo : Clo has the
same character traits as Trish as she is her clone. The name,
Clo is a short form of Clone. She outwits Trish the original
genetic material that she is cloned from. The Mother : She is
at somewhere in Planet Trion building up a space station. It
takes 2 years to reach Trion from Earth. MORAL VALUES

The Moral Values I Have Learnt

I have selected the short story entitled One Is One and All Alone
written by Nicholas Fisk in order to answer the question. The short story
tells about a girl named Trish who travels to Planet Trion in a spaceship
in 2045. She clones herself in the BioLab and Clo who is her clone
becomes her companion. However, the twist happens when Trish is
disposed by her own clone.
The moral values that I have learnt from the short story are to think
carefully before we take certain actions and we must not be cruel to
others. The moral values are portrayed by the main character in the
short story, Trish. First and foremost, Trish does not think carefully
when she decides to clone herself in the BioLab. She then clones Clo
who becomes her companion but later her enemy because Clo is
always interrupting her privacy. In addition to this, Trish does not think
twice when she decides to dispose Clo by using the spaceship disposal
system. She forgets that Clo thinks the same thing as her too. Last but
not least, Trish is cruel by having the bad thought to dispose Clo
through the hatch. In the end, Trish does not think of the consequences
of her actions and Clo outsmarts her and disposes her.
In conclusion, the moral values that I have learnt from the short
story are to think carefully before we take certain actions and we must
not be cruel to others. I do not want to end up like Trish in the short
story.

The theme of the short story is family relationship is of utmost
importance in the process of growing up. Children need the love from
parents and siblings in order to grow up healthily. First and foremost,
Trish is the only child in the spaceship and the other crews are adults.
She does not have anyone of her age to play with and to share her
happiness and sadness. So, siblings are important to children in the
process of growing up. In addition to this, Trishs mother is away in
Planet Trion and she is deprives of motherly love. Trish needs her
mother by her side to guide her in the process of growing up so that she
does not make the wrong choice of cloning herself. Last but not least,
Trishs father is too busy with his work in the spaceship. There is no one
to monitor Trishs moves and tell her that it is wrong to clone herself.
In conclusion, the theme of the short story is family relationship is
of utmost importance in the process of growing up. Only with the love
from both parents and siblings then the children can grow up healthily

The character I dislike the most in the short story is Clo. Clo is
the clone produced by Trish in the BioLab in the spaceship she travels
in on the way to Planet Trion. I dislike her the most because she is a
copy cat, shrewd and selfish person. First and foremost, Clo is a copy

Most Important Incident

I have selected the short story entitled One Is One and All
Alone written by Nicholas Fisk in order to answer the question. The
short story tells about a girl named Trish who travels to Planet Trion in a
spaceship in 2045. She clones herself in the BioLab and Clo who is her
clone becomes her companion. However, the twist happens when Trish
is disposed by her own clone.
The important incident in the short story is when Trish clones herself in
the BioLab to produce Clo, who is her clone. This incident is important
due to several reasons First and foremost, this incident shows that Trish
is a clever person. She learns about clone and cloning from
VoicePrinter and she attempts to clone herself. Finally she succeeds in
cloning herself. In addition to this, the incident is important because
Trish solves her problem of being lonely. She clones Clo who becomes
her perfect companion. Trishs life becomes more colourful and
meaningful with Clos existence. Last but not least, the incident is
important because it conveys the moral value of to think twice before we
act. Trish does not think twice when she decides to clone and later
to dispose Clo by using the spaceship disposal system. She clones Clo
without thinking of the consequences. She forgets that Clo thinks the

same thing as her too. Trish has the bad thought to dispose Clo through
the hatch. In the end, Trish does not think of the consequences of her
actions and Clo outsmarts her and disposes her. Therefore, we must
think twice before doing something.
In conclusion, the important incident in the short story is when
Trish clones herself in the BioLab to produce clo, who is her clone due
to the above reasons. We are to think carefully before we take certain
actions. I do not want to end up like Trish in the short story.
