Population density in the Sahara

Density per km

Is the Sahara-Sahel as empty as it is

often described? The answer is clearly
yes, if we look at the population density
map. There are less than five persons
per km2 between the densely populated
areas of the Mediterranean coastline
and the moderately populated Sahelian
countries to the south - this is to say, a
human desert. However, the Sahara
appears to be much less empty if we
calculate the population density per km
of roads or trails. This representation
also shows much higher densities in
the North and the South. Within the so
called empty areas, some significant
population densities appear along the
roads. For the Sahara-Sahelian people,
the notion of territory is attached to
the road. While the vast territories
between these roads are of relatively
little importance, a large number of
cities are set up around this network of
roads. It is important to keep in mind
that the majority of Saharo-Sahelian
people are urban dwellers.

e Sahara-Sahel est-il vide comme

on le dit souvent ? Oui, si lon
en croit la carte des densits de
population aukm. Entre les zones
peuples de la cte mditerranenne et du sud des pays sahliens,
on ne trouve que moins de cinq
personnes par km, cest--dire un
dsert humain. Mais si lon calcule
le nombre dhabitants par km de
route (ou de piste), on obtient une
image diffrente. Cette reprsentation montre galement des densits
beaucoup plus fortes au Nord et au
Sud. Cependant, on voit apparatre
sur lespace rput vide, des densits
significatives de population concentres le long des routes. Pour les
Saharo-Sahliens, le territoire est
rattach la route. Ce quil y a entre
les routes a peu dimportance. Sur ce
maillage de routes, sinscrit un grand
nombre de villes et il faut garder
lesprit que la majorit des habitants
de cette zone sont des urbains.
