first gardenia in September.
I used the planting mix rec-
ommended for our area and
I have fertilized it every two
weeks all fall and into early
winter. Should I prune it at
all now?
No. Any reshaping you do
of gardenias should follow
the main spring bloom, and
it should only be as-needed
to maintain good plant form.
Anytime a gardenia suffers
winter damage you can also
prune back the dead twigs
in late February or March.
In fact, if you fear that your
plant might be harmed by
cold, cover it with light-
weight frost cloth or an old
sheet. Either would pre-
vent wind burn as well as
trapping warmth from the
soil. Otherwise, just keep it
moist this winter. It does not
need any additional fertil-
izer until it starts growing
next spring.
