Headlines
*EPA Releases Report: "Climate Change in the United States: Benefits of Global Action"
This EPA report estimates the physical and monetary benefits to the U.S. of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
The report summarizes results from the Climate Change Impacts and Risk Analysis (CIRA) project, a peer-reviewed study
comparing impacts in a future with significant global action on climate change to a future in which current greenhouse gas
emissions continue to rise. The report shows that global action on climate change will significantly benefit Americans by
saving lives and avoiding costly damages across the U.S. economy.
*EPA National Water Program Releases 2015 Workplan
This Workplan lays out the actions that the EPA National Water Program plans to take in 2015 to implement the "EPA
National Water Program 2012 Strategy: Response to Climate Change" (2012 Strategy). The 2012 Strategy describes
long-term goals for the management of sustainable water resources in light of climate change. It is intended to be a
roadmap to guide program planning and inform decision-makers during the Agency's planning and budgeting process.

*Progress Report Out on Actions to Build Resilience to Climate Change Impacts in Vulnerable Communities
As part of his Climate Action Plan, President Obama established the State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on
Climate Preparedness and Resilience in 2013. The Task Forces recommendations emphasized the importance of
supporting communities that are disproportionately affected, including those facing economic or health-related
challenges. The White House is currently releasing a progress report highlighting some of the key actions taken by the
Administration in support of the Task Forces recommendations. You can take part in a White House Google+ Climate
Hangout next week to further discuss the new set of announcements and the Task Force Progress Report. The public
can ask questions using #ActOnClimate and/or JOIN THE GOOGLE CLIMATE HANGOUT
*Energy Department Announces New Initiatives as Part of Administrations Clean Energy Investment Summit
Recently, the Department of Energy announced several new and expanding initiatives as part of the Administrations
Clean Energy Investment Summit, including the launch of a Clean Energy Impact Investment Center (CEII), which will
work to make the Departments resources more readily available to the public, including to mission-driven investors. Clean

energy finance is a key part of the solution set on climate change. This announcement builds off the Clean Energy
Investment Initiative that was announced by Senior Advisor Brian Deese at the ARPA-E Summit in February, highlighting
expanded private sector investment in solutions to climate change, including innovative technologies with breakthrough
potential to reduce carbon pollution.
*The Funders' Network Releases RFP for Partners for Places Grants Due August 10
Partners for Places grant program improves communities by building partnerships between local government sustainability
leaders and place-based foundations. National funders invest in local projects developed through these partnerships to
promote a healthy environment, a strong economy and well-being for all residents.
*Environmental Sustainability Grant Program Due October 20
The goal of the National Science Foundation's Environmental Sustainability Program is to promote sustainable engineered
systems that support human well-being and that are also compatible with sustaining natural systems. The program
supports engineering research that seeks to balance society's need to provide ecological protection and maintain stable
economic conditions.

*DOI, USDA, EPA, NOAA and USACE Announce Additional Resilient Lands and Waters Initiative Sites to Prepare
Natural Resources for Climate Change
The Department of the Interior (DOI), Department of Agriculture (USDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) recently
recognized three new collaborative landscape partnerships across the country. Federal agencies will focus on efforts with
partners to conserve and restore important lands and waters and make them more resilient to a changing climate.
*Strength in Numbers: Tackling Environmental Challenges by Collaborating with the Neighbors Next Door
Mayor DuPree talks about how mayors in Mississippi have accomplished things together with their communities, EPA, and
each other that would be otherwise impossible.

*Communities Get a Lift as Local Food Sales Surge to $11 Billion a Year
The U.S. Department of Agriculture pinpoints more than 4,000 local and regional food businesses and projects from
food hubs to farm-to-school programs to initiatives to expand healthy food access to low-income communities in every
state around the country.
*EPA Launches 2015 Campus RainWorks Challenge, Registration Begins Sept. 1
EPA is calling for entries in its fourth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a green infrastructure design competition for
undergraduate and graduate students. Student teams, working with a faculty advisor, will submit design boards, a project
narrative, and a letter of support for a green infrastructure project on their campuses. This year, student teams will be
encouraged to incorporate climate resiliency into their stormwater management designs.
*Energy Department Awards $18 Million to Develop Valuable Bioproducts and Biofuels from Algae
The Energy Department recently announced six projects that will receive up to $18 million in funding to reduce the
modeled price of algae- based biofuels to less than $5 per gasoline gallon equivalent by 2019. This funding supports the
development of a bioeconomy that can help create green jobs, spur innovation, improve the environment, and achieve
national energy security.
*New EPA Technical Assistance Reports on Safe Growth and District-Scale Energy Planning
EPA is releasing reports from two technical assistance projects in the San Francisco Bay Area, one on integrating

resilience to natural hazards into land use planning and the other on planning for district-scale energy. Both describe
processes and strategies that other communities could use as models for their own efforts.
*Four New Reports Illustrate How Green Infrastructure Can Improve Communities
EPA is releasing four reports from the Greening Americas Capitals Program. Greening America's Capitals helps state
capitals develop an implementable vision of environmentally friendly neighborhoods that incorporate innovative green
infrastructure strategies
*Global Renewable Energy Capacity Grows 8.5% in 2014
Global generation capacity for solar, wind, and other renewable energy technologies grew 8.5% in 2014 over the year
before, according to the recently-released tenth-annual edition of REN21s Renewables 2015 Global Status Report. About
135 gigawatts (GW) of added renewable power increased the total worldwide installed capacity to 1,712 GW.
*U.S. Requires Arizona and New Mexico Plant Owners to Reduce Emissions at Navajo Nation Four Corners Power
Plant
Recently the U.S. EPA and the U.S. Department of Justice announced a federal Clean Air Act settlement with several
Arizona and New Mexico-based utility companies to install pollution control technology to reduce harmful air pollution from
the Four Corners Power Plant located on the Navajo Nation near Shiprock, New Mexico.
*Four New Reports Illustrate How Green Infrastructure Can Improve Communities

A new study shows the devastating effects of climate change on national park infrastructure, and historical and cultural
resources; a new report demonstrates the positive impact of Interior activities on the national economy; PILT payments
from Interior put more than $400M into local treasuries; a landmark this week for the Land Buy-Back Program; and
Secretary Jewell joins former Secretary Bruce Babbitt to help mark the 15th anniversary of the National Conservation
Lands System.
*National Tribal Toxics Council Membership Applications Due July 31
The National Tribal Toxics Council (NTTC) is seeking additional members for broader regional representation. The NTTC
is a Tribal Partnership Group funded by Environmental Protection Agency Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics
(OPPT) and comprised of representatives from tribes across the country.
*Obama Administration Assists Communities in Building Local Food Systems to Foster Economic Growth
USDA state-by-state reports show that the top states for Federal local food investments include Kentucky, Wisconsin,
Mississippi, Texas and Alabama. The Obama Administration invited communities to participate in Local Foods, Local
Places, a federal initiative providing direct technical support to build strong local food systems as part of a community's
emerging economic action plans.
*EPA Proposes to Cancel Some Uses of an Insecticide Commonly Used for Residential, Industrial and
Commercial Purposes
The U.S. EPA is proposing to cancel certain uses of the insecticide propoxur after preliminary human health assessment
found risks from certain applications. EPA and the registrant reached an agreement to voluntarily cancel certain uses of
propoxur. At the same time, EPA is proposing to cancel certain other pesticide registrations.
*Land Banks and Land Banking, 2nd Edition

Land Banks and Land Banking, 2nd Ed., provides historic context about the development of land banking and its rapid
evolution over the last four years. Readers will also find a trove of practical resources, including guidance on creating and
operating a land bank, template state enabling legislation and sample administrative policies.
*Using Smart Growth Strategies to Foster Economic Development: A Kelso, Washington Case Study
Through the Smart Growth Implementation Assistance Program, EPA worked directly with Kelso, Washington, to explore
how smart growth strategies could address the city's economic challenges brought about by the decline of the logging and
smelt fishing industries. The resulting report provides a tool for communities looking to create their own smart growth
economic development strategy that emphasizes existing assets and small, manageable solutions that create stronger,
more resilient communities.

*Climate Solutions University Now Accepting Applications for 2016


Climate Solutions University has helped more than 30 communities create adaptation plans that are ready for
implementation. Your region is a good fit for the program if you need to tackle the following challenges:
Social equity and the impact of climate change on vulnerable citizens
A regional approach to planning that integrates urban and rural linkages
Threats to watersheds, forest, and economic resources using an ecosystem services model
Community leaders of local government agencies; Watershed organizations and resource conservation districts;
Nonprofits; and Civic organizations should apply.
EPA Seeking Nominations for new Chemical Safety Advisory Committee Due July 13
The U.S. EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention announced the establishment of the Chemical Safety
Advisory Committee (CSAC) and solicited nominations for membership on the Committee. The purpose of the CSAC,

which is established under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, is to provide expert scientific advice, information, and
recommendations to the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics on the scientific basis for risk assessments,

KC Schoolyard Garden Summit July 14
The KC Regional Schoolyard Garden Summit will be on July 14. It is co-hosted with the Kansas City Community Gardens
(KCCG) and KC Public School District. The Summit will take place on July 14 at Paseo Academy of Fine Arts in Kansas
City, Missouri, and were expecting up to 200 attendees.
EPA's 2015 Extreme Events Workshops and Coastal Resilience Training Series July 14-15: Des Moines, Iowa
EPA's Climate Ready Water Utilities (CRWU) Initiative is offering workshops for drinking water, wastewater, and
stormwater utilities that focus on understanding and adapting to challenges from extreme events, featuring training on the
Climate Resilience Evaluation and Awareness Tool (CREAT).
Coastal Resilience for the Water Sector: Training for Technical Assistance Providers July 21-22: West Babylon,
New York
The Climate Ready Water Utilities Initiative is also offering a series of trainings for water sector technical assistance
providers. The trainings will focus on how to support utilities in understanding and adapting to impacts from coastal storm
events and related threats using two new EPA tools: the Climate Resilience Evaluation and Awareness Tools (CREAT)
Version 3.0 and the Storm Surge Inundation and Hurricane Strike Frequency Map.

Have Ideas for Expanding Solar on Leased Commercial Buildings? Weigh in today! Due July 27
In order to promote the adoption of photovoltaics and other advanced cost-effective technologies for commercial buildings,
the SunShot Initiative and the Better Buildings Alliance (BBA) issued a request for information to explore strategies to
support, expand, and streamline efforts to deploy solar on and for commercial buildings in the U.S. real estate market.
Revised RFP for Round 7 of the Partners for Places Grant Program Due August 10
The Funders Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities recently released the RFP for Round 7 of the Partners
for Places grant program. Since then, in collaboration with our project partners, we have decided to revise the RFP and
Proposal Form to more clearly emphasize that a focus on equity and equitable outcomes is fundamental to sustainability.
Apply for a Fruit Tree Planting Foundation Orchard in Your Community Ongoing
The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (FTPF) strategically donates orchards where the harvest will best serve communities
for generations, including at community gardens, public schools, city and state parks, low-income neighborhoods, and
Native American reservations.
