Church Cleaning, July 27-Aug 2, Siobhan Daly & Dan Summerfeldt

A WORD FROM SERVANT OF GOD ISAAC HECKER,

Founder of the Paulist Fathers

As this movement does not suppose any change in the teaching or

the worship of the Church, neither does it anticipate a miraculous
interposition or action on the part of the Holy Spirit [On the Mission of
New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill,
and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul
Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

Pastoral Corner

The Gospel paints a picture of miraculous sharing. Those who had a little gave what they had. Those who had much
gave to those who had nothing. Everyone gave something. There was more than enough for everybody. The miracle
was a miracle of trust.
Could that kind of miracle take place in our 21st century world? It is just what Pope Francis is calling us to think about in
his encyclical, Laudato Si. The title in English is Care for Our Common Home. To call the earth our common home is
to make a statement of belief that the world is a gift from God, a gift given to everyone. Those of us who have enough
of what we need are encouraged to see what we have not as something we are entitled to, but to rather see it as a gift
that we must share. Our world would see a miraculous feeding if we trusted each other enough to give what we have for
the common good.
SASI
I have been attending the Social Action Summer Institute, Cherishing Creation hosted at University of Portland by Matt
Cato, director of the Portland Archdiocese Office of Justice and Peace. The national conference is put on each year by
The National Roundtable Association of Catholic Diocesan Social Action Directors. I attended a talk by retired
Archbishop Skylstad of Spokane, one of the main players in the consultation process that led to the writing of an
international pastoral letter by the Bishops of America and Canada, called The Columbia River Watershed: Caring for
Creation and the Common Good. Ive heard so much about this pastoral letter written in the year 2000-2001. It is great
to finally meet some of the main players.
Summer Vacation
Grateful for the opportunity, I spent several weeks after the Paulist retreat in New Jersey visiting my siblings in Maryland,
New Jersey, and New York; and the Paulist summer house at Lake George. I happily spent a week in my shop there,
working on a Eucharistic set for use on retreats: A chalice, a plate, and a candle stand. Theyre made from beautiful
walnut wood from a one hundred foot high tree that I and another priest cut down 30 years ago. We have been curing
and storing the wood ever since. Now were making things: 3 years ago I build a Craftsman Style Altar for use on
retreat. Two years ago I built a Craftsman Style Computer Table. Last year I built an antique design called a Federal
Candle Table. Ill put the Eucharistic set in the vestibule for you to see.
