About the AquaCiser

AquaCiser III

4.4.3 Center Platform

The center platform is the area between the reservoir and therapy pool (See Components, page 10). The operator stands on the
platform to operate the Command Console and monitor the therapy session. Access panels for the lint basket, plumbing, and
chlorine dispenser are located in the center platform.
CHLORINE DISPENSER ACCESS PANEL
The chlorine dispenser (Figure 4) is located inside the first
access panel at the top of the stairs (see Components, page
10). The chlorine dispenser adds chlorine to the water to help
control bacteria and algae growth, and the chlorine minimizes
soap and mineral buildup. Most users should set the rocker
power switch on the chlorine dispenser to TIMER and use
the control knob to adjust how quickly chlorine is added to
the water (see Chlorine Dispenser Settings at right and Water
Condition on pages 48 and 49).
PLUMBING ACCESS PANEL
The plumbing access panel is in the center of the platform and
allows access to the heater, Jandy valves and plumbing.
LINT BASKET ACCESS PANEL
The lint basket access panel is located nearest the Controls
Box and allows access to the lint basket for cleaning, and to
additional plumbing.

4.4.4 Therapy Pool

The therapy pool (see Components, page 10) is the chamber
in which a person exercises for aquatic therapy. The therapy
pool contains the entry/exit door, treadmill, Emergency
Drain buttons, therapy and turbo jets, and lamps.
THERAPY POOL DOOR LEVER
The door lever (Figure 5) secures the therapy pool door. Keep
the door securely fastened at all times, including when the
AquaCiser is not in use. Open only for a patient to enter or
exit the therapy pool.
To open: Swing the lever up until it is parallel with the door.
To secure: Shut the door and pull the lever down until it
stops (Figure 5).
If the door is not fastened securely, a sensor on the door
latch indicates a fault, Tank Door Open, and filling or
draining the therapy pool is disabled. Always verify the door
is securely closed by pulling the lever to the completely
closed position as shown in Figure 5.

Control Knob

Figure 4 Chlorine
Dispenser

Rocker Switch

Chlorine Dispenser Settings

Most users should set the rocker switch to TIMER and
use the control knob to set the amount of chlorine
added to the water. An AquaCiser with VERY LOW use
(1-3 people per day) may need to use the ON setting
in order to keep enough chlorine in the water. When
set to ON, chlorine is added to the water whenever
the pump or filter are in use.

Important
Flooding can occur if the therapy pool door is not
securely fastened. Always close and secure the door by
pulling the lever down after the patient enters or exits
the therapy pool.

LAMPS
The AquaCiser has one light and a rotating color wheel.
Fiber-optic lines direct the colored light to four lamps in the
therapy chamber. (Two are visible in Figure 6, page 13). Use
the command console to turn the lamps ON and OFF (see
Components, page 10). When ON, the lights change color
periodically.

About the AquaCiser

AquaCiser III
JETS
The AquaCiser has two types of water jet: therapy and turbo
(Figure 6). The jets are controlled from the command console (see
Components, page 10). Only one type of jet can be used at a time.
Turning one type of jet ON automatically turns the other type of
jets OFF. All jets can be aimed as needed.

Therapy Jets (6 this end)

Note:
The filter operates when the jets are used.
Therapy Jets (12 total, 6 each end) - Therapy jets inject a mixture
of water and air into the therapy pool. Six jets are installed at each
end of the therapy chamber. They provide resistance and massaging
pressure for the patient from multiple angles. The water level must
be above the jets for the jets to be used.
Sensors in the therapy pool read the water level and turn on only
the jets that are below water level. For example, to use only the
lowest therapy jets (2 front and 2 rear), stop filling the therapy pool
when the water level covers the lowest jets.
Turbo Jets (2) - The turbo jets are located at the front (command
console end) of the therapy pool. They forcefully push streams of
water (without air) through the therapy pool and provide strong
pressure or resistance for the patient, from one direction. The water
level must be above the turbo jets for use.
Examples: If the patient is walking or jogging while facing the
therapy chamber doors, the turbo jets provide assistance by pushing
water toward the back of the patients legs. If the patient is facing
the command console end, the turbo jets provide resistance by
pushing water against the front of the legs. Follow your therapy
protocols for appropriate use of the turbo jets.

The clear acrylic plastic resting seat is located at the front (command
console end) of the therapy pool. Lower the seat to provide a place
for the patient to sit if he/she tires during the therapy session.
Also use the seat to allow the patient to sit and perform stretching
exercises with or without therapy jets in use.
Pull the seat down to lower it for use. Push the seat up and into
its locking clamps (Figure 7) to store it. The load limit of the seat
when dry (not under water) is 250 pounds (113 kg).

SETTING THE WATER TEMPERATURE
To set the water temperature, press SETPOINT in the Water
Temperature area of the screen. This will bring up a small
numeric keypad screen.
Enter the desired temperature on the
keypad and press the enter key (an arrow
pointing down and to the left).

Enter Symbol
The command console software will not
accept a Setpoint above 105F (40.5 C). An alarm will sound
and the AquaCiser will stop if the actual temperature exceeds
106 F (41.1 C).
Changing the Setpoint does not, by itself, change the water
temperature. To warm the water, use either of the following
methods to move water over the heater:

If the water is in the reservoir, press ENABLE FILTER.

If the water is in the therapy pool, turn either set of

jets to ON. Remember, the jets operate only when the
water level is above them.

Important
After pressing the FILL or DRAIN TO RESERVOIR buttons,
there is a normal pause of 2-5 seconds before the
pump begins moving water between the reservoir and
therapy pool. Be patient and allow time for the pump
to begin operating.
FILLING AND DRAINING THE THERAPY POOL

Important
Flooding can occur if the therapy pool door is not
fastened. Always close and secure the door by pulling
the lever down after the patient enters or exits the
therapy pool.

The trained AquaCiser operator does the following:

1. Assist the patient as he/she enters the therapy pool, if
needed.
2. Securely close the therapy pool door. Verify that the
door is secure before continuing.
3. Follow the physicians and/or therapists order and
set the appropriate water level for the patient (for
examples, see Figures 11 and 12).

To fill the therapy pool, press the FILL button.

To stop filling the therapy pool, press POOL OFF

when the water is at the desired level.

If the filling process is not stopped earlier, a sensor

will shut off the pump when the water depth reaches
48" (about 122 cm) inside the therapy pool.

Before draining the therapy pool:

1. Stop the treadmill using the Treadmill Functions screen
(see Treadmill Functions Screen, pages 20-21).
2. Press JETS OFF on the Therapy Pool Functions screen.
3. Press DRAIN TO RESERVOIR. This will pump the
water into the reservoir.

USING THE JETS

Use the jets to provide resistance and massaging action for
the patient (Figure 13).
To turn the jets ON, press JETS NORMAL to activate the
therapy jets, or press JETS TURBO to activate the turbo
jets.
Only one type of jet can be used at a time. Selecting one type
of jet will automatically deactivate the other type.
Press JETS OFF to turn off all jets.
Note: The water level in the therapy pool must be higher
than the level of the jets in order to use the jets.
USING THE LAMPS
Press the LAMP ON and LAMP OFF buttons to control the
four lamps in the therapy pool. While activated, the light
will change color periodically (Figure 13).
FILTER

Figure 13 - Therapy Jets and Lamps in Use

When the filter is ON (Enabled):

The water is cycled through the filter.

The water moves through the heater.

Chlorine is added to the water.

Hudson strongly recommends that you press ENABLE

FILTER to filter the water whenever the water is in the
reservoir. Filtering the water removes impurities, controls
algae growth and keeps the water at the Setpoint temperature
by warming it as needed.
Note: All of the water must be in the reservoir for the filter
to run. The filter cannot be enabled when there is water in
the therapy pool.
Enabling the filter is one way to increase the water temperature
if the water is colder than the Setpoint. To warm the water, enter
a Setpoint that is higher than the current water temperature
and press ENABLE FILTER. The filter will run until the
water reaches the Setpoint and will stop automatically.
Note: The other way to warm the water is to turn ON any of
the jets while the water is in the therapy pool.

Leaving the Filter Enabled

It is good operating practice to allow the AquaCiser
to filter and/or warm the water as needed. Do the
following:
1. Move all of the water to the reservoir any time the
AquaCiser will be idle, and during the End of Day
sequence (page 38).
2. Press ENABLE FILTER.

If the water temperature is at the Setpoint, the

AquaCiser will turn ON and run (cycle) for a
minimum of 10 minutes every eight hours to filter
and add chlorine to the water (see Water Condition,
pages 48-49).

If the water temperature falls below the Setpoint

before eight hours have elapsed, the filter and heater
will operate to maintain the water temperature at
the Setpoint.

The heater operates with the filter when the water

temperature is 2 F (1.1 C) or more colder than the
Setpoint temperature. The heater and filter will run
until the water temperature equals the Setpoint and
then stop automatically.

Important
Move all water to the reservoir and press FILTER
ENABLE whenever the AquaCiser will be idle. The filter
will run 10 minutes every 8 hours to cycle the water
(minimum), or it will turn on as needed to keep the
water at the Setpoint temperature.

If the water becomes contaminated (See Dealing with
Contaminated Water, this page), or if you are ready to clean
the AquaCiser during the Maintenance Sequence, press the
DRAIN DISCARD button (Figure 14) to send water to the
waste drain.

WARNING
Contaminated water can spread disease. Discard
contaminated water and clean and disinfect the
AquaCiser.

The most common use of the DRAIN DISCARD button is

when you wish to clean the AquaCiser. See Maintenance
Sequence, pages 42-46.

DISCARDING WATER
If there is water in the therapy pool and the water level
is higher than the first sensor above the treadmill, press
DRAIN DISCARD once to discard only the water in the
therapy pool to the waste drain. Press DRAIN DISCARD a
second time to drain all water from the AquaCiser reservoir
and therapy pool.

Figure 14 - Drain Discard Button

If there is no water in the therapy pool or the water level

is lower than the first sensor above the treadmill, pressing
DRAIN DISCARD once will drain all water from both the
therapy pool and reservoir.

DRAIN DISCARD
VIA EMERGENCY DRAIN BUTTON
If the electrical power to the AquaCiser is interrupted
(for example, during a power outage), press either
EMERGENCY DRAIN button (Figure 15) to discard the
water from the therapy pool to the waste drain.
This allows a patient to exit the therapy pool when a power
outage occurs.
Note: If the AquaCiser has electrical power, pressing
either EMERGENCY DRAIN button stops the treadmill
and activates the pump to move the water from the therapy
pool to the reservoir. The EMERGENCY DRAIN button only
discards water to the waste drain when there is no electrical
power to the AquaCiser.

Figure 15 - Emergency Drain Button (1 of 2)

Dealing With Contaminated Water

If the patient is incontinent or if the water in the therapy
pool becomes contaminated by any other means, do the
following:

If the jets and pump are OFF and contamination is

limited to the therapy pool, press DRAIN DISCARD
to send the water in the therapy pool to the waste
drain. Clean the therapy pool following Steps 1-3 of
the Maintenance Sequence, pages 42 and 43.

If any jets are in use or if the pump is moving

water to the reservoir when the contamination
is discovered, DRAIN DISCARD all water and
clean the entire AquaCiser. Follow the complete
Maintenance Sequence on pages 42-46.

Note: If contaminated water in limited to the Therapy

Pool, do not pump the water to the reservoir - this will
contaminate additional areas of the AquaCiser.

10 - TEST THE WATER CONDITION
Verify that the chlorine bottle is not empty (See Replacing
the Chlorine Container, page 41). The water should meet the
following criteria:
Water Hardness
250-500 ppm
Total Chlorine
less than 2 ppm
Free Chlorine
1-3 ppm
pH 7.2-7.8
Alkalinity
80-120 ppm
If the water does not meet the criteria above, treat the water

Maintaining the AquaCiser

7.6 Cleaning the Filter Cartridge

1. Fill a large plastic or fiberglass container with lukewarm
water deep enough to cover the filter. Do not put the filter
in the container at this time. Do NOT use a metal or
porcelain container to clean the filter.
2. If using Filter-Cleanse crystals (not included), add 1
pound of crystals for every 10 gallons of water.
3. Stir the solution with a wooden stick until the solution
turns red and the crystals dissolve.
4. Place the filter in the solution. Ensure the solution
completely covers the filter.
5. Remove the filter after the solution has turned yellow
or orange.
6. Discard the solution. Follow your facilitys protocols
and your municipalitys regulations regarding the
disposal of chemicals.
7. Rinse the filter from the inside out with warm water
from a non-pressurized hose.

Important
Do not use a galvanized steel, aluminum, or porcelain
container to clean the filter. Filter-Cleanse can corrode
these materials. Use only a plastic or fiberglass
container.

Important
When cleaning the filter, wear Personal Protective
Equipment as recommended by the cleaning products
Material Safety Data Sheet.
The Filter-Cleanse manufacturer recommends gloves,
safety goggles and a dust mask be worn while using
the chemical. Use only in a well-ventilated area.
When using Filter-Fresh, gloves, safety goggles and
a plastic or rubber apron must be worn. Use only in a
well-ventilated area.

8. Allow the filter to air dry. The filter must be dry before
it can be used in the AquaCiser.
9. Reuse the filter until it begins to show wear. Replace
worn filters (See Supplies, page 52).
Note: Remember to reset the Filter Hours timer on the
Maintenance Functions Screen (Figure 50).

Water Condition

AquaCiser III

8 - WATER CONDITION
8.1 General Guidelines
Maintaining clean and proper water condition is important
for the patients health, for controlling algae and bacteria,
and for maintaining the AquaCiser.
Each facility is unique. The time it takes to condition the
water in your AquaCiser will vary based on the water supply
and the patient load.
In-service training and maintaining a proper Water-Condition
Log (included) are the best ways to learn how to condition
your water. See Using the Water-Condition Log, page 49.
Sample Water-Condition Logs are provided on pages 56 and
57, or you can make your own Water-Condition Log.

8.2 Test the Water Twice Daily

(Minimum)
Test the chlorine and the pH levels in the water at least twice
daily. Hudson recommends testing the water during the
Daily Start-up and End of Day sequences. The water should
meet the following criteria:
Water Hardness
250-500 ppm
Total Chlorine
less than 2 ppm
Free Chlorine
1-3 ppm
pH 7.2-7.8
Alkalinity
80-120 ppm

WARNING
Improper handling or use of water-treatment
chemicals can cause injury. Follow the chemical
manufacturers directions for use.

WARNING
Improper water conditioning can cause injury
and damage the AquaCiser. Maintain the water
condition as directed in this manual and keep a
Water-Condition Log.

Water Condition Sequence

1. Test the Water Condition
2. Adjust the Chlorine Levels
3. Adjust the pH
4. Adjust the Alkalinity
Record all water condition data on a Water-Condition
Log (see sample on page 49). Water-Condition Logs are
provided on pages 56 and 57.

Note: A pH and chlorine test kit is included with the

AquaCiser. To order additional test kits and chlorine, see
Supplies, page 52.
To test the water, move all of the water to the reservoir. Use
a chlorine test kit and follow the test kit manufacturers
directions.
If the readings are in the proper ranges, keep the chlorine
dispenser setting on LOW so the level does not change
when the filter is in use. If the levels are out of range, see
Adjusting the Water Condition, page 49.

range, press DISABLE FILTER.

Do NOT attempt to adjust all three properties of the water

(chlorine, pH and alkalinity) at the same time. Each property
affects the others. Always adjust the chlorine levels first,
followed by the pH and then the alkalinity.

For additional chlorine dispenser information, see the RolaChem Chlorinator manual included with the AquaCiser.
Also see the Chlorine Dispenser information on page 11. If
problems persist, see Basic Troubleshooting, pages 50-51.

ADJUSTING THE CHLORINE LEVELS

ADJUSTING PH AND ALKALINITY LEVELS

If the chlorine levels are within the proper ranges: turn

the chlorine dispenser setting to LOW so the level does not
change when the filter is running.
If the chlorine levels tested high: Bring the levels down
by replacing some of the water in the AquaCiser. After
adding water, retest the water condition and make further
adjustments as needed.
If the chlorine levels tested low:
1. Check the chlorine container to verify that it is not
empty and that the suction tube is reaching the chlorine
(See Replacing the Chlorine Container, page 41).
2. Press ENABLE FILTER to begin cycling the water, or
fill the therapy pool above at least one pair of therapy
jets and turn the jets ON.
3. Verify the chlorine dispenser rocker switch is on
TIMER (not OFF) and adjust the chlorine dispenser
control knob to the next highest number on the dial.

Adjust the pH after adjusting the chlorine levels.

Chemicals are available to raise or lower the pH
level (see Supplies, page 52). Follow the chemical
manufacturers guidelines for use and consult the
chemical MSDS sheet for details on any required
Personal Protective Equipment.

If needed, adjust the alkalinity after the chlorine levels

and pH levels are in range.

If the three water properties cannot be brought into

the acceptable range, the water may be contaminated.
Discard the water, clean the AquaCiser and add
fresh water, following the Maintenance Sequence,
pages 42-46.

If you still have trouble after changing the water and

you are sure no contamination is taking place, test the
incoming water source outside of the AquaCiser.

If the incoming water source is out of range, contact

your local or state water authority for assistance and
further testing.

4. Retest the chlorine levels in one-half hour to one hour

and see how much the levels have changed.
5. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to make further water adjustments
as needed.
6. When the chlorine levels are within the acceptable

8.4 Using the Water-Condition Log

A sample Water-Condition Log is shown below. Blank forms are provided on pages 56 and 57. Maintaining a log can show
water condition patterns and help you establish chlorine settings. The first row should be filled out during the in-service
training; use this as a baseline.
