There is no product that
can be applied to the soil to
be taken in through the roots.
Professional applicators have
a spray they can apply to the
mistletoe, but it does little
more than kill it back to its
roots. The best control is to
prune it out in its first winter,
before it becomes firmly root-
ed and before the twigs be-
come larger branches. About
all that can be done when it
is infesting large limbs is to
keep it pruned off flush each
winter. If someone develops
a better remedy it will be a
real boon to the horticultural
industry.
Dear Neil: We are consid-
ering replacing our St. Augus-
tine with Turffalo grass. Any
comments?
You need to decide, first
and foremost, what the very
best turfgrass for your needs
would be. If you have shade,
St. Augustine is the hands
down winner. Turffalo is a
form of buffalograss. As such,
it is drought-tolerant, but
it definitely will need full or
nearly full sunlight. Bermu-
dagrass and St. Augustine
will both invade any buf-
falograss planting. There is
no chemical control to stop
them.

Did you every wish you
were wealthy enough to own
fishing and hunting land
across the Lone Star State?
While actually owning the
land might be a wishful
thinking for most of us, hav-
ing access to thousands of
acres of prime fishing wa-
ters and hunting lands, for
a very affordable price, is re-
ally well within our reach.
My longtime friend,
Dusty Schneider has been
in the business of locating
hunting lands, negotiat-
ing deals with landowners
and offering access to his
hunting club members for
almost 20 years. Dusty re-
cently joined forces with
another like group of folks
that lease fishing rights to
over 80 excellent lakes in
Texas. The merger is knows
as The American Fish and
Game Club (www.ameri-

and organization is provid-
ing myriad opportunities
for those that enjoy hunting
and fishing on a wide assort-
ment of properties, rather
than just one lease. Here’s
the way the Club works:
The member simply goes
online and decides where he
wishes to hunt or fish. The
club’s website has a listing
of properties that includes
particulars to each lake or
hunting area and very clear
driving direction. A full
time employee with the club
schedules the lake or piece
of hunting property for the
club member on a particu-
lar day and the deal is done,
simple as that!
This past week, I joined
Schneider and long time
club member Mike Hunn for
a little bass fishing. When
planning the trip, Dusty
asked me to go online and
choose a lake I wished to fish.
With lakes well distributed
across the state, I though I’d
look for one close to home.
I was surprised to find the
Club has a lake within three
miles of my home. I studied
the details pertaining to the
lake online and drove right
to the gate. The map on the
Club’s web page depicted a
very accurate description
of the various lakes on the
property and the roads used
to access them. Well orga-
nized!

finding that perfect hunting

OVARIAN CANCER
As with other forms of cancer, the earlier ovarian cancer is
diagnosed, the better the chances are for recovery. However, ovarian
cancer is difficult to detect early. In many cases, the symptoms are non-
existent or very mild until the disease reaches a more advanced stage.
To complicate matters, symptoms of ovarian cancer are nonspecific and
often mimic those of other conditions, such as digestive and bladder
disorders. Consequently, women are counseled to be suspicious of
symptoms such as abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling, or bloating;
urinary urgency; and/or pelvic pain or discomfort. Additional signs may
include persistent indigestion, unexplained changes in bowel or bladder
habits, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss or gain, pain during
intercourse, and low back pain.

Just about everyone has
seen a Great Blue Heron.
These are large, elegant
birds, often refered to as “gray
cranes” or “blue cranes.” This
is a wonderful time of year to
watch for herons and egrets.
They are all around many
ponds and lakes. In addition
to “Big Blue,” as I like to call
the Great Blue Heron, we
have several other species of
herons and egrets.
First, what is the differ-
ence between a heron and
an egret? Just the name.
They are all members of the
family Ardeidae and some
egrets and herons are in the
same genus. For example,
the Great Blue Heron is
Ardea herodias, while the
Great Egret is Ardea alba.
Likewise, Snowy Egret and
Little Blue Heron are in a
genus together. The family
also includes bitterns, which
are brown streaky marsh
birds. I will not discuss them
here since, although they
are not rare here, they are
very difficult to find. Typi-
cal herons, night-herons,
and bitterns are all in dif-
ferent subfamilies. Typical
herons include Great Blue
Heron, Little Blue Heron,
and Snowy Egret. We have
two species of night-heron:
Black-crowned and Yellow-
crowned.
I will start with some
dark-colored herons. We
have good ol “Big Blue,” the
Great Blue Heron. It’s a big
bird: the largest heron in
North America. They usu-
ally eat fish, frogs, and other
aquatic animals, but will eat
whatever they can catch, in-
cluding small mammals and
small birds. The Great Blue
Heron nests in colonies.
It is always fun to see the
awkward young in big stick
nests at the tops of trees,
jostling for nest space. Both
parents incubate three to
five pale blue eggs for almost
a month. Then the young
herons spend another two
to three months in the nest
before leaving. This species
is present in our area year-
round.
The Little Blue Heron is
much smaller. Adults are
dark slaty blue, with a ma-
roon tint to the neck and
head. Like the Big Blue,
its diet is varied and can
include small fish, crusta-
ceans, grasshoppers, frogs,
lizards, snakes, turtles and
spiders; it will forage both in
the water and on land. This
is another colony-nester;
eggs take about three weeks
to hatch and the young be-
gin to climb out of the nest at
two to three weeks. They are
independent at about six to
seven weeks. This species is
only found here in the sum-
mer. Immature Little Blues
are actually white, and molt
patchwork-like into the slaty
blue color. The white imma-
tures are very similar to the
Snowy Egret, which I will
talk about next.
Snowy Egrets are said
to have “golden slippers.”
Adults have black legs with
yellow feet (and matching
black beak with yellow in
front of the eye). It is also
known for its active feeding
behavior of dancing wildly
around in shallow water.
However, I have noticed
a tendency for the Snowy
Egret to become stealthy,
slow, and subdued whenever
I decided to point this out to
people. Its diet and nesting
habits are similar to the Lit-
tle Blue Heron, and like that
species, it only occurs here
during the summer.
Immatures of these two
species can be nearly impos-
sible to separate at times.
Usually, Snowy Egret has a
dark-tipped beak that fades
into yellow-green lores (that
is the area in front of the
eye) and its legs are yel-
low-green, occasionally with
black on the front of the legs.
The Little Blue Heron typi-
cally has pale green, gray, or
pinkish bill and lores with
the dark tip, and dull green
legs. Nonetheless, these col-
ors can be variable and hard

to separate. The immature
Little Blue Heron, even
when all white otherwise,
has tiny bits of dark on the
wingtips. If you can see this
you have your identification.
Otherwise it is sometimes
best to leave some unidenti-
fied.
A rare late summer visitor
to our area is the Tricolored
Heron. It is about the size
of a Little Blue or Snowy,
but has a very long yellow
(nonbreeding plumage) or
blue and black (breeding
plumage) bill, and a unique
dark breast with contrasting
white belly in both breeding
and non-breeding plum-
age. It is a very elegant and
pretty heron that usually oc-
curs on the Gulf coast and

There is still time to register students for
prekindergarten at Prairie View and Seven
Hills elementary schools. Northwest ISD of-
fers prekindergarten classes for qualifying
4-year-olds. To be eligible for enrollment, a
child must be at least 4 years of age on or
before Sept. 1, 2008, and must meet one of
the following requirements:
The following documentation will be required
upon registration: birth certificate, immunization
records, Social Security card and proof of residen-
cy (utility bill, lease agreement, etc.). In addition,
proof of income (current check stub) will be needed
for the free and reduced-lunch program application.
Military families will need to bring their DOD ID,
and reservists will need to bring paperwork indicat-
ing that they have been placed on active duty.

Now for some smaller
birds. The Cattle Egret, as
you all know, follows cows (or
sometimes tractors plowing
fields) looking for disturbed
insects. This short egret is
white (with orange-yellow
patches on the head, breast,
and back during peak breed-
ing plumage) with a yellow
beak and black legs (red
during peak breeding sea-
son). Cattle Egrets didn’t
occur on our continent be-
fore the early 1950s; they
spread to South America
from Africa in the late 1800s
and then made their way up
north. It was not introduced
by humans and is thought to
usually have little impact on
native heron populations. It,
like the other species, usu-
ally nests in colonies. It is
only found here during the
summer.
The Green Heron is a
short, stocky bird with a
greenish back and cap and
rufous belly. The immatures
are streaky brown. If you
get to see one up close it is
a treat; the rich colors and
fine details on the wings are
exquisite. This species usu-
ally nests alone or in small
groups. The young can ap-
parently fly when they are
3 weeks old, but the parents
will take care of them for a
few more weeks after that.
This is another summer spe-
cies.
Finally, the night-her-
ons. I have seen more Yel-
low-crowned than Black-
crowned here, but both do
occur during the summer.
They are called night-herons
because they mainly forage
at dusk and dawn, although
you can see them out during
the day. The Yellow-crowned
Night-Heron is gray with a
boldly patterned head black-
and-white head. The Black-
crowned Night-Heron is
pale gray with a black crown
and back. Immatures of both
species are extremely hard
to tell apart; they are both
streaky brown with white-
spotted wings. The Yellow-
crowned Night-Heron main-
ly eats crustaceans such as
crayfish and crabs, while
the Black-crowned prefers
fish. As with all the other
herons, they will eat lots of
other aquatic critters in-
cluding frogs, mollusks, and
insects. The Black-crowned
Night-Heron usually breeds
in colonies, while the Yellow-
crowned nests alone or in
colonies.
