Mathematical Concepts
of Young Children
Contribution: Children
will develop
mathematical problem
solving strategies e.g.
dividing resources
Exploration: Children
will explore their world,
find reasons to calculate,
estimate, and measure
Communication: Children
have fun with numbers
and begin to understand
mathematical ways
Weekly Plan,
11- 15 April, 2015
Math concepts of young children
Monday
Matching activity - Use numerical cards
with beads/buttons, children will arrange
numeral cards in sequence and match with
same quantity of buttons.
Play game- children will take turns to pick
up a number card without looking, then
will get the same amount of objects or
marbles from another container.
Tuesday
Measuring -Make play dough with
children, let the children help measure
flour, salt, oil and only a few drops of
food colouring.
Distinguish- use different sized ribbons,
teach children how to distinguish the
length of the ribbons e.g. big-biggerbiggest, small- smaller- smallest etc.
Wednesday
Patterns make patterns when making
necklaces with different color beads.
Baking activity we will make muffins,
children will involved themselves with
preparation, discuss about the amount of
ingredients we are using, how many
muffins are we going to make, will that be
enough for everyone?
U/2 Nursery rhymes and finger plays
involved numbers
Environment- The classroom environment was visually rich with lots of math activities; especially the wall poster Teacher Rosy arranged showing
children involved with mathematical activities was and still is popular. Overall our classroom environment provides a wide range of open ended
mathematical resources based upon all the mathematical domains. We also bought lots of new resources eg. marbles, poker chips etc.
Children - Everyday our children love to engage on variety of math activities especially from Montessori shelf, art corner, puzzles etc. Children are
communicating more mathematical ideas with each other and with teachers. They are more interested to learn and involve in new mathematical
activities. Teachers also written lots of learning stories about children engaged in numeracy activities.
Parents/Whanau Parents are showing interest and working alongside with teachers to teach their children more numeracy skills. Some parents
helped with mathematical art resources such as boxes, egg cartoons etc.
Director/Management- Director provided support for teachers to make resources. The director also provided a wide range of materials to support
with the mathematical interest of the children.
