family visited the park last week for a stroll around the lake and some playtime. For more photos, please see page 13.

For 14-year-old Mt. Laurel resident Matthew Thomas, golf was

always in his blood.
His grandfather Fred plays
golf. His father Kevin also plays
golf. So it shouldnt have been a
surprise when Matthew picked
up a set of clubs and began playing at the age of 9.
Today, Matthew not only plays
the sport regularly, but he has become one of the better golfers his
age on the South Jersey Junior
Tour. He has won a pair of tournaments individually, and on July
25, he teamed up with his dad to
win the tours Parent-Child Classic Championship at Old York
Country Club. The duo shot a 67
to win the tournament by three
strokes. Their score was the best
across all three of the tours divisions.

Rowan College at Burlington County

shifting main campus to Mt. Laurel
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Its been a summer of change
for Burlington Countys community college.
In June, Burlington County
College transformed into Rowan
College at Burlington County
after signing a partnership with
Rowan University. With the partnership, all Rowan College at
Burlington County students will
be accepted to Rowan University
once they complete their associates degree and certain programspecific requirements. In addition, the university is offering select courses at RCBC and is providing five, $2,000 scholarships
annually.
With the change in name will
come a newly designated main
campus, and school officials announced Mt. Laurel has been cho-

sen to be the schools new epicenter.

Rowan College at Burlington
County announced on July 27 it
will soon close its 40-year-old
Pemberton campus and make Mt.
Laurel the schools main campus.
The move was announced about
six weeks after the partnership
between RCBC and Rowan University was announced. Paul
Drayton, president of Rowan College at Burlington County, said
the campus change is the next
major step in the schools transformation.
A number of factors played in
the decision to make Mt. Laurel
the main campus. The biggest factor was the number of students
and staff who reside in and
around the township. With shifts
in population and demand over
recent years, Drayton said more
students are now attending class-

es on the Mt. Laurel campus than

all of the colleges other campuses combined.
The majority of our students
attend class in Mt. Laurel, Drayton said. Over the last decade or
so, the numbers have shifted dramatically.
The decision was made that
the students are here and the faculty wants to be here, Drayton
continued. Many of our students
and faculty live close to the Mt.
Laurel area.
Another big factor was the cost
of maintaining the aging Pemberton campus. The college performed a study revealing Pemberton was in need of infrastructure
improvements costing approximately $50 million.
When the partnership with
Rowan was discussed, Drayton
said the university was very interested in making Mt. Laurel the
main campus for students.
This is where Rowan wanted
to teach their courses and classes, he said. This is where our
other on-site partners are located
as well.
Making Mt. Laurel RCBCs
main campus will involve making
a number of improvements to the
existing buildings. When the
change was discussed, it was discovered the college would not
have to make major additions to
combine the two campuses.
The consultants came back
and said we have the capacity to
consolidate in Mt. Laurel, Drayton said.

State Police outfitting troopers with body cameras; more could come across state

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

ew Jersey State Police are

spending $1.5 million to outfit
1,000 troopers over the next
nine months with body cameras. Its a
hefty price to pay for technology, but a
very small one when considering the
good it will do.
Body cameras for police have become increasingly popular throughout
the country following police shootings
that made national headlines in places
such as Ferguson, Mo.
Troopers will wear the body cameras on either their shirt or their hat,
and will be required to turn them on
during traffic stops, protests, investigations and while making arrests.

Your thoughts
What do you think about police officers
being outfitted with body cameras? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Acting state Attorney General John

Hoffman said the cameras will act as
an objective witness in police-involved
shootings and other use-of-force incidents.
Some local police departments, such
as Glassboro, Paulsboro, Evesham and
even Rowan University, have already
adopted body cameras for their police
forces. And more could be coming, as

the state plans to use $2.5 million in

forfeiture funds to help other local departments buy cameras.
Police body cameras are a wonderful
idea, and any state money that can be
used to help local departments outfit
their officers with them is a good
thing.
The safety and security of the people
of New Jersey are of the utmost importance, above all other concerns of
living in our state. Any initiative that
improves that safety and security
while at the same time serving as an
objective judge for citizens and officers is something that should be explored and implemented.

Four candidates vie for three BOE seats

Incumbents Maureen Sojka, Ronald Frey run for re-election,
while Michele-Ann Frey and Melissa DeClementi try for first terms
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Four candidates will be running for three
seats in this Novembers board of education
election for Mt. Laurel Schools, according to
the Burlington County Clerks office.
Incumbent board members Maureen

Sojka and Ronald Frey will run for re-election against newcomers Michele-Ann Frey
and Melissa DeClementi. Sojka serves as
the boards president and is running for
her third term after originally being elected in 2009. Frey is a long-time member of
the board. He served from 1987 to 1996 and
again from 2003 through today. Joanne

Pelly, whose term expires at the end of this

year, did not file to run for re-election.
In the Lenape Regional High School District, John Jeffers will run for re-election
unopposed for a Mt. Laurel seat on the
board.
The school board elections will take
place Tuesday, Nov. 3.

isting buildings will involve repurposing space to use it more efficiently. One example Drayton
gave was re-purposing some of
the schools computer labs to use
for office or classroom space.
Much of the re-purposing work is

expected to begin late this year.

Drayton said the school is
working on other improvements
to enhance the atmosphere of the
campus.
We also have a plan to better
connect the existing buildings to
give it more of a college-like feel,
he said.
One building the college will
construct is a new student center.
Drayton said planning for the
new building will begin in the
near future and will include a library, dining facility, student success center and more.
The shift from Pemberton to
Mt. Laurel will be a gradual
process. Drayton expects the transition to take about 12 to 18

months. However, he hopes the

change will bring a fresh look to
the Mt. Laurel campus and allow
it to serve as a model for other
community colleges around the
region.
The entire package is really
designed to really look like what a
modern
community
college
should look like, he said.
The school is having a celebration of the new changes on Tuesday, Aug. 18 at the Mt. Laurel campus in the Enterprise Center. The
school is celebrating its recent
changes and will unveil its new
logo. Doors open for the celebration at 3 p.m. and guests can

since his son first picked up golf
clubs at the age of 9 and he has
been able to watch him grow.
I started taking him down to a

I told him he had to improve and

Matthew is not all that different from his father. Kevin also
picked up golf around the same
age as his son and used to shoot

My dad played and I got the

Kevin said.
When Matthew was younger,
golf wasnt his favorite sport.
While he started playing golf
when he was 9, he didnt begin
playing competitively until he
turned 13.
I played baseball then,
Matthew said. Thats what I
wanted to do mostly. Then I kind
of switched over.
Matthew credited his dad for
helping him become a better
golfer. As Matthew improved his
skills, he moved up from the chip
and putt course to full-size holes.
He taught me everything with
my swing, Matthew said. I
loved playing golf. I just wanted to
start playing it more.
At 13, Matthew decided he
wanted to focus on golf instead of
baseball and began to play on the
South Jersey Junior Tour. The
move was crucial to Matthews
improvement as a golfer.
It was perfect for him, Kevin
said. Its competitive, but not a

Matthew was so successful in

the future division, he moved up
to the tours high school division
in the summer of 2014.
The move to a higher division
was a bit of an adjustment for
Matthew. He admitted there were
some nerves when he began playing against kids three to four
years older than he was.
I was nervous at first, because
I didnt know what to expect, he
said. But Im used to it now.
Matthew believes he has benefitted from playing tougher competition. Not only has he been

forced to up his game in tournaments, but Matthew said he has

learned a lot about the game just
talking to the older players on the
tour. He believes he is fully prepared to try out for Lenape High
Schools golf team next spring.
I dont think itll be a whole lot
different, he said. I hope that
its kind of the same thing.
While Matthew looks forward
to playing on the high school
level, he still relishes the times he
gets to play with his father Kevin
and grandfather Fred, who now
lives in Pittsburgh. When
Matthew and Kevin are able to get
together with Fred, the three always try to find time to play a
round and continue what is now a
three generation-long family tradition.
