ATOMIC SHELLING OF HIROSHIMA AND

NAGASAKI
Well, Im going to talk about the atomic shelling of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Firstly, Ill tell
you some about the history of this shelling, the composition of the bombs and the consequences
of this terrible disaster.
History
In August 1945, during the final stage of the Second World War, the United States dropped
atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The war in Europe had concluded when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on
May 8, 1945.
In 1922, the Japanese were offended by the Washington Naval Treaty , which limited the
number of ships that could possess. In addition, on the 5 th of November , Emperor Hirohito and
the Japanese government decided to declare the war on the United States if the petrol demand is
not take back by the end of December.
On the 26th of July, Truman and the government of United Kingdom and China calls for the
unconditional surrender of the Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26,
1945. This declaration was presented like an ultimatum and they assured that they will destroy
Japan. But, on the

the 28th of July, the government of Japan and Kantaro Suzuki refused

this declaration because they affirmed that this declaration was a copy of the Declaration of El
Cairo. For this reason, Truman thought about the decision of lefting bombs in Japan. Finally, he
decided to do it.
On the 7th of December of 1941, the first Japanese fleet launched a massive air attack on Pearl
Harbor, so the next day, December 8 , the United States Congress declared the war on Japan in
response to this.
The attack on took place just a day after that Roosevelt authorized a secret project known as the
Manhattan Engineering District , which eventually was named Manhattan Project.
This project was complained about by some scientist. One example is Albert Einstein. He wrote
a letter to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, claiming about this project because the Uranio will be
dangerous and there was a possibility of making a bomb with Uranio.
So, the United States, with the government of Canada and United Kingdom, designed and made
the first atomic bombs. This bomb was tested in 16 th of July in 1945, nearest Alamogordo in
New Mexico. It has called as Prueba Trinity.

The Manhattan Project made 2 types of atomic bombs. The first bomb was dropped over
Hiroshima. It was called Little Boy and it has Uranio-235, a very dangerous component. Then,
the second bomb was called Fat Man and was made from Plutonio-239, a synthetic element.
Hiroshima was the primary target of the atomic shelling, followed by Kokura and Nagasaki.
Hiroshima was a city of some importance and military industry.
Hiroshima was the primary target of the atomic bombing of primer followed by Kokura and
Nagasaki.
The date of 6th of August, the day when they dropped the bomb, was chosen this day because
the day before the city had been covered by clouds
The population of Hiroshima had reached a peak of 381,000 before the war. The city had
wooden houses and also it had some industries.
The B-29 Enola Gay was the plane which dropped the bomb. Firstly, the government of Japan
detected the USA planes and they announced an alarm to alert the people. A special plane flies
over the city to find this USA plane, but they didnt see
anything, so the people did their normal life. Then, 1 hour after,
the government detected again the plain.
The bomb Little Boy was dropped at 8 oclock. The aim of
USA was a bridges Aioi but because of the wind, the bomb
was dropped in a hospital. There was a lot of consequences.
One important consequence is that the temperature increased
more than 1 million degrees. Another consequence is that the
bomb made a big ball of fire, approximately 256 metres of
diameter.
The explosion broke the windows of the buildings. In 30 min
after the explosion, it started to rain black water. This rain
contained a lot of dirt and radio actives particle.
Between 70.000-80.000 people were injured.
The radius of the total destruction was 1,6 km and also causing fire in 11,4km. The Americans
estimate that 12,1 km of the city were destroyed.
The energy of this terrible bomb caused several burns under the clothes.
To conclude, there were 90.000-140.000 dead. But the radioactive particles produced a lot of
healths problem, like cancer. For this reason, some people assure that there was more than
200.000 dead because of the cancer.
And there were only 2 survivors. The first survivor was Eiz Nomura. He was near from the
explosion, but he was under her house, in the basement.

And the other survivor was Akiko Takakura who was inside the bank in the moment of the
explosion.
