Oneimportantjustificationforourresearchisthatultradensedeuteriummaybeaveryefficientfuelin
laserdrivennuclearfusion.Itispossibletoachievenuclearfusionbetweendeuteriumnucleiusinghigh
powerlasers,releasingvastamountsofenergy,saysLeifHolmlid.
Thelasertechnologyhaslongbeentestedonfrozendeuterium,knownasdeuteriumice,butresults
havebeenpoor.Ithasprovedtobeverydifficulttocompressthedeuteriumicesufficientlyforittoattain

Energysourceofthefuture
Ultradensedeuteriumisamilliontimesmoredensethanfrozendeuterium,makingitrelativelyeasyto
createanuclearfusionreactionusinghighpowerpulsesoflaserlight.
Ifwecanproducelargequantitiesofultradensedeuterium,thefusionprocessmaybecometheenergy
sourceofthefuture.Anditmaybecomeavailablemuchearlierthanwehavethoughtpossible,saysLeif
Holmlid.
Further,webelievethatwecandesignthedeuteriumfusionsuchthatitproducesonlyheliumand
hydrogenasitsproducts,bothofwhicharecompletelynonhazardous.Itwillnotbenecessarytodeal
withthehighlyradioactivetritiumthatisplannedforuseinothertypesoffuturefusionreactors,andthis
meansthatlaserdrivennuclearfusionasweenvisageitwillbebothmoresustainableandless

theformofheavywater(D2O),anditwillprobablyalsobeusedasfuelinfusionreactorsinthefuture.
