P5T4 : Lesson 5

Volume

Lets Solve Together:

A rectangular tank measures 90 cm by 60 cm by 50 cm. 4 cubes of edge 20 cm
are placed into the tank. The tank is then filled with water flowing from a tap at
a rate of 5 litres per minute. Water seeps out from a hole at the bottom of the
tank at a rate of 400 ml per minute. How long will it take before the tank
overflows with water? (Give your answer to the nearest minute).

1.

A rectangular glass tank 40 cm long and 20 cm wide is 4/5 filled with

water. When 8 litres of water was added, the tank was filled to the brim.
Find the height of the tank.

2.

A rectangular tank, 80 cm long and 40 cm wide, containing some metal

balls was 3/4 filled with water. When all the metal balls were taken out
without any loss of water, the water level decreased by 1/2 of its original
height. There were 48 litres of water in the tank after removing the metal
balls and the volume of each metal ball was 500 cm3.
a) Find the height of the tank.
b) How many metal balls were there in the tank at first?

The diagram below shows a rectangular container half-filled with water.

When 6 identical metal balls are placed in the container, the water level
rises to the brim.
a) Find the volume of one metal ball.
b) When the water in the rectangular container is transferred to a cubical
tank, the cubical tank is only 25% filled. Find the height of the cubical
tank.

The base of an aquarium tank was 4800 cm2. Alan was able to fill the tank
with 4 litres of water every one minute. How long would it take the water
to reach a depth of 10 cm? If it took 60 minutes to fill the tank, find the
height of the tank.

6.

A tank, 30 cm by 15 cm by 18 cm, was 1/5 filled with water at first. Tap A,

which could fill the tank completely in 2 hours, was turned on first. Tap B,
which could fill the tank completely in 6 hours, was turned on 30 minutes
after Tap A was turned on.
a) How much water was in the tank after 30 minutes?
b) How long did it take to fill the rest of the tank completely with water?

A rectangular tank 100 cm long, 50 cm wide and 60 cm high was 3/4 full of
water.
a) Find the volume of water in the tank.
b) The water was poured into a metal tank with a base of 9000 cm2. What
would be the height of water in the metal tank?
c) If 25 litres of Liquid P was added to the water in the metal tank, what
percentage of the resulting mixture was Liquid P?

A tank with a rectangular base of 50 cm by 40 cm and a height of 60 cm

was half filled with water. When a solid cube was placed in the tank, the
height of the water rose by 4 cm.
a) Find the length of a side of the solid cube.
b) Water is then allowed to flow out through a tap at the bottom of the tank
at a uniform rate of 800 cm3 per minute. How long did it take for the
water level in the tank to drop to the top of the solid cube?

tank with sand as shown.
a) Find the volume of water in the fish tank when it is filled to the brim.
b) Water is pumped out of the tank at a rate of 85 cm3/s. Find the time it
will take to completely drain the fish tank rounded to the nearest second.

10. Sam had a rectangular tank with size of 50 cm by 40 cm by 40 cm and it

was 1/8 filled with water. At 0930 hour, Sam turned on the Tap X with
water flowing out at a rate of 4 litres per minute. At 0940 hour, Sam turned
on the Tap Y to drained water out of the tank at a fixed rate. At 0945 hour,
