Studies about Elderly People

 Today, 1 out of 10 people is at least 60 years of age

 Average population will still increase

 By 2050, 1 out of 5 individuals will be 60 years or older

 By 2150, 1 out of every 3

 As this trend continues, we will face more problems providing

for the old and integrating them into society

 The increase in the percentage of elderly populations will

create a setting where there is a high population growth with

people living longer lives.

 As a result, countries need to address the current needs of the

elderly.

Philippine Census in the year 2000

 4.6 million senior citizens or 60 years and over

 Median age of senior citizens was 68 years

 85 males per 100 females

1987 Philippine Constitution

Article II, Section 9 on State Policies

“The State shall promote a just and dynamic social

order that will ensure the prosperity and independence of the

nation and free the people from poverty through policies that

provide adequate social services, promote full development, a

rising standard of living and an improved quality of life.”

Article XIII, Section 2 on Health/Social Services

“The State shall adopt an integrated and

comprehensive approach to health development which shall

endeavor to make essential goods, health and other social services

available to all people at affordable cost. There shall be priority for

the needs of the underprivileged sick, elderly, disabled, women and

children.”

Article XV, Section 4 on the Filipino Family

“It is the duty of the family to take care of its older

person members while the State may design programs of social

security for them.”

More than 4,100 senior citizens have participated and

benefited from activities that included regular weekly exercise,

educational training, rice assistance, free purchase slips, and water

supply and sanitation facilities.

Studies about Elderly People in the Philippines

 3.19 million senior citizens in 1990

 4.59 million senior citizens in 2000

 Decadal average annual (exponential) growth rate of 3.64%

(+2.26% growth rate from the previous decade)

 The older population is growing faster than the total

population of the Philippines.

 By 2030, senior citizens will be 10% of the total population of

the Philippines.

Choices of the Elderly to Stay Fit

We, the NLEX group, interviewed elderly people in our

respective provinces. We asked the elders whether they are

currently engaged at fitness programs. After compiling the answers

of the elders, we categorized the common fitness programs. We

have found out that…..

From the 200 elders we have interviewed, only 140 elders are

currently engaged at fitness programs, which is 7 out of 10

elders.

Based on our research and studies, we, the NLEX group have

found out that the elders engage more on the forte or the

specialization of each province. In Isabela, more elders engage on

gardening and farming. This is because Isabela is an agricultural

province. In Bulacan, more elders engage on yoga and knitting

because it is the most commonly offered in that place, so as with

Valenzuela City. And lastly in La Union, more elders engage on

fishing and farming and sports like lawn tennis.
