HOWDEN KNOW-HOW

PLANNED MAINTENANCE IS THE ROUTE

PLANNED MAINTENANCE AND

APPROPRIATE UPGRADES WILL KEEP
COMPRESSORS AT OR ABOVE THEIR
ORIGINAL SPECIFICATION. THE
HOWDEN APPROACH TO SERVICING
FOCUSES CLEARLY ON FINDING THE
CAUSES OF PROBLEMS RATHER THAN
JUST DEALING WITH THE SYMPTOMS.

TO RELIABILITY AND EFFICIENCY

Burton Corblin custom-designed compressors
are designed for high-pressure duties, often
handling difficult gases and specialised process
requirements. They depend upon a complex
interaction of finely balanced components.
If problems arise, they usually have complex
causes requiring specialist expertise to identify
the root and determine an appropriate course
of remedial action.

Aftermarket support
Where parts are subject to wear, their
life can be extended by fine-tuning the
compressors operating parameters to
precisely reflect its workload.
Substituting key components with
long-life equivalents leads to increased
availability.
Howden minimises downtime by offering
fast technical and logistical support and
providing OEM parts on demand from
our comprehensive stock.
Installations can be given a second life
through analysis and redesign to meet
new operating conditions.

On-site support
Howden specialists can assess
compressor performance and operating
parameters, and recommend a package
of improvements.
Regular maintenance, planned and
supervised by Howden, will extend
operating life and prevent expensive
breakdowns.
Howden engineers can optimise the
integration of the compressor into its
associated plant.
Planned maintenance can avoid
unexpected and expensive emergency
outages.

All Howden maintenance meets

ISO 9001 and 14001 standards.
Howden engineers are UIC
certified and adhere strictly to
health and safety best practice
while on site.

Aftermarket support
Howden has a comprehensive worldwide
aftermarket support structure designed to
provide rapid responses and minimise downtime.
It includes site service teams, customer liaison
specialists, on-line support, repairs shops,
production staff, design engineers and a full
stock of OEM parts.
Eliminating impurities
Ensuring that the gas phase is stabilised and
controlled during compression will prevent the
creation of condensates and polymerisation
particles that can impair performance and lead
to premature wear of components. Howden
specialists can investigate these phenomena
and if necessary carry out adjustments to
eliminate them.
Upgrades
Upgrade opportunities vary between installations,
depending on factors such as operating
temperatures and pressures, the type and
purity of the process gas and the frequency
with which the plant is stopped and started.
Replacing components with long-life alternatives
designed to cope with the stresses of heavy-duty
operations, and introducing components designed
specifically for the process gas involved, can bring
marked improvements in reliability and availability.
Retrofits
Howden compressors are carefully designed
and manufactured to meet the demands and
conditions prevailing at the time of installation.
Any alteration in these conditions will have
an impact on compressor performance.

A typical Burton Corblin compressor cylinder assembly

Changes in the gas phase, for example, can

generate condensates and polymerisation
particles during compression. These problems
can be avoided by adjusting the systems that
regulate the compression process, replacing
particular components or integrating additional
equipment into the process.

In these circumstances, we can supply a bespoke

maintenance schedule. We can also provide
parts designed to reduce stresses in critical
areas. This will reduce both the frequency
of maintenance needed and the number of
spares required, and give higher efficiency
and availability.

Every Howden retrofit project is designed to

address the causes of reduced performance,
and not just deal with the effects. Both the
current conditions and the target performance
will be thoroughly analysed in planning the
best course of action.

WE CAN IDENTIFY AND CORRECT

On-site maintenance
Howden maintenance packages provide the
best route to maximum compressor availability.
Our field technicians will not only carry out full
inspection procedures and planned maintenance
expertly and efficiently, they can suggest
appropriate actions to improve compressor
performance and advise on improvements which
may have taken place in areas like filter design
and mechanical assemblies.

CONDITIONS.

EXISTING AND POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

TO BRING THE COMPRESSOR BACK TO
ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE LEVELS, OR
RETROFIT TO MEET NEW OPERATING

Problem solving
If compressor efficiency is decreasing, or
if higher availability is required, Howdens
experienced engineers can provide the best
route to raising performance, based on their
understanding of both the Howden products
and customer needs.
Operating conditions vary enormously.
Where there are large pressure variations at
the compressor outlet, or where the unit is
switched on and off frequently, an enormous
strain is placed on mechanical components.
