CHRISTIE: GROW ARMY

BRYON HOULGRAVE/THE REGISTER

Gov. Chris Christie spoke at the Des Moines Register soap box at the Iowa State Fair on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.

Governor, speaking at Iowa State Fair, says America must act as a deterrent

Chris Christie said Saturday the U.S. must grow its

military to provide a deterrent to Russian and Chinese
expansionary ambitions.
Speaking at The Des Moines Register Political Soapbox at the Iowa State Fair, the New Jersey governor and
Republican presidential candidate said he would rebuild our military, send a clear signal to Russia and to
China that we dont want a war, but we are not going to
allow them to tread on the United States of America.
Christie called for conducting military exercises in
Eastern Europe and re-installing U.S. missile defense
systems to Poland to deter Russian President Vladimir
Putin from further expansion.
Mr. Putin needs to understand theres going to be a
president who will not put up with his interventions

around the world, Christie said.

Some of the loudest applause for Christie came
when he called for increasing the number of activeduty troops, Navy ships and aircraft in the U.S. arsenal.
President Barack Obama has been the weakest
president of foreign policy we have had in my lifetime, he said. He makes Jimmy Carter look strong.
Christie gave no stump speech on the soapbox and
instead spent his entire time answering audience
questions.
Three animal rights activists protesting hog gestation crates climbed on stage and interrupted the talk
but Christie quickly moved on and later called the incident relatively minor compared to protesters he

MIDDLETOWN Its the kind of commute an artist

might dream of a sunrise trip from New Jersey to
New York, with beams of light reflecting off the Manhattan skyline.
Most of the 200 commuters on board the Bravest,
one of NY Waterways three ferries operating out of
Belford, dont seem to notice the scenery. On this
morning, the majority are plugged into their smartphones or napping.
What the passengers do pay attention to is the
clock: Its 7:15 and the Bravest has docked in lower
Manhattan, almost exactly 45 minutes after it left and
precisely on schedule.
If these commuters had taken the train, they
wouldnt arrive at Penn Station until after 7:30 a.m.
