ROUP OF PARISHES

Hello everyone
Ooh! How I love harvest time! The golden landscape, the smell of the harvest field
and orchard. The feeling of gathering whilst there is an abundance of crops and
produce, to store or preserve for the less productive months ahead. It certainly is a
busy time making jams, chutneys, the ubiquitous Ratatouille, (I had to look that
spelling up!), pies and crumbles for the freezer.
Or you can just take an amble to watch young swallows practising and massing for
their amazingly long flight. How do they do that, such little creatures, yet so clever?
If you're lucky and can escape urban night light, you may just catch a falling star
from a meteor shower. Enjoy.

TTO
O ALL PARISHIONERS
TTOLLARISHIONERS
A
OLLARISHIONERS
APPALL PARISHIONERS
The year moves swiftly on. September brings the hope of an Indian summer, a new
school term and it's time once more - can you believe it? - for a new series of Strictly
Come Dancing to step out onto our TV screens, brightening the way to that special
time in December when churches are especially busy.
As I write, it appears that Autumn, the season of mists and mellow fruitful-ness, is
already upon us. The harvest is in full swing and the fields are full of grain. How
wonderful it would be if all over the world the harvest was so plentiful. But sadly,
inequalities in climate, economics and distribution mean that while some countries
have a surfeit of food, many have insufficient to sustain life, suffering drought and
chronic famine and deprivation. Relief agencies and charities throughout the world
do their best to redress the balance and many of us give generously to assist this
work. Our God is a God of abundance and properly distributed, there should be
enough for all.
At this time of year when we feel a close affinity with the land, we in the churches
particularly look forward to welcoming people to our Harvest Festival services,
coming up over the next few weeks, with our schools taking a lead role. The harvest
gifts - the food items and local-grown produce we collect- is donated within our
communities, where it can do most good.
Food banks have long been highlighted in the news; according to local media there
is a surge in demand in our area of Norfolk (as in most of the UK) for their services.
The charity the Trussell Trust works in partnership with local churches and
community groups to set up food banks. Here in West Norfolk there is a food bank in
King's Lynn with satellite branches in Hunstanton and Downham Market; there are
also food banks in Dereham and Thetford. Many people, we are told, are having to
make the stark choice between paying their bills or putting food on the table - and
this must surely concern us all. No one is immune from falling on hard times, due to
redundancy perhaps or bereavement - or some other unforeseen crisis; it is good
that we have in place robust structures to support one another. Food banks are such
a safety net and they do valuable work in supporting people in crisis and signposting
them to agencies where other, longer-term help is available if needed.
So this Harvest time let us give thanks to our God of abundance for all the good
things in our lives; and may we all be blessed with generous hearts overflowing with
love for those in need, wherever we find them.
Reverend Judith Pollard.

ASHWICKEN, LEZIATE & BAWSEY NEWS

West Norfolk Village Games
Well done and thank so much to all
those who represented our G.L.E.A.M.
villages in the West Norfolk Village
Games held at Lynnsport in June this
year (that is Gayton, Leziate, East
Winch, Ashwicken & Middleton).
We finished in joint 2nd place with 39
points (tied with Feltwell), which was
just behind Terrington St Clement who
had 41 points.

It was a great day out for us all, and

particular congratulations must go to
the juniors in our team who won
Badminton, Archery and the Gladiator
Challenge (photo attached of the
GLEAM junior winning teams).
We ended the day with a celebratory
get-together at the Crown in Gayton.
Thank you again to Sibelco, who very
kindly paid for our team T-shirts again.

LEZIATE PARISH COUNCIL

REPORT

Parish Council that opening the car

park would be a good option to
reduce the problems.

The Parish Council met on

Wednesday 8th July and 17th August
for their monthly meetings.

Cllr Barnett was concerned about

funding of cycle paths, which could
make a real difference to rural areas
such as ours. Encouraged by
CPRE's recent campaign the parish
council has written to Henry
Bellingham and George Osborne to
see if funding could be increased to
help create a better cycle network.

It was reported that Councillors had

met with Sibelco and Norfolk County
Council officers to discuss the
position of the silica sand review. At
the moment it appears that NCC is
looking at sites that could be
possible silica sand mining
allocations. The Parish Council felt
that it would be advantageous for
everyone if the Parish Council was
involved and consulted on the sites
at this stage. Local knowledge is
often invaluable; we are still waiting
for NCC to come back about this.
Councillors recently met with County
Councillor Coke and the highways
engineer and raised concerns about
various aspects of highway
maintenance. It seems that some
work is substandard and that this is
not a cost effective way of
approaching maintenance. Public
footpaths need attention and there
doesn't appear to be action from
NCC on some of these paths. It was
agreed to write to Cllr Coke and as
him to attend the next Parish Council
meeting so that all these concerns
can be relayed onto him again and
hopefully the parish council can get
some answers.
Parking, in the good weather, is still
an issue in Bawsey and because of
this there has been evidence of
displacement parking in Leziate and
Ashwicken. It would appear to the
08 | The Gayton Group of Parishes September 2015

The parish council agreed to support

installation of a horse aware sign in
Leziate Drove. It appears a resident
has asked for a sign as horses do
ride along here, even after they
offered to pay for it NCC Highways
refused the request.
Cllr Beales reported the reasons
why the LDF has been held up by an
Inspector. The Clerk reported she
had contacted the borough council
and no further comment can be
made now or at the Inspectors
review.
SNAP meetings are now taking
place in Hunstanton which is a long
way for Councillors and residents to
travel. It was agreed to write to the
Chair of SNAP and ask if this can be
considered again as it was felt
attendance would decrease because
of it.
Leziate Parish Council will not meet
in September but the next meeting
will be on 14th October 2015, 7.30pm
in the village hall. All parishioners
are welcome.

GAYTON NEWS
Gayton Parish Council News
New Councillor
The Council co-opted Mr Peter Gidney to
the Council. Peter has a background in
planning and the Council is pleased to
welcome this expertise into the mix.
Skatepark
The Council was very pleased to note that
the installation of the new skatepark is
now completed. It was agreed to hold an
official opening ceremony at 6.00pm on
Monday 14th September. The Council
hopes that the Mayor will attend the event
and that local people who have been
using the ramps will be able to provide a
demonstration for those attending. The
Lynn News will also be invited and Mr
Anota of Whitehouse Services very kindly
offered to provide refreshments.
Streetlight Electricity Maintenance
The Council agreed to accept a new
contract for Streetlight Electricity
Maintenance with TT Jones Electrical
over three years on the proviso that they
will have no issue supplying the ballasts
needed for the streetlights owned by the
Parish Council.
Bus shelter on Lynn Road
The Council acknowledged that creating
viewing panels in the sides of the bus
shelter would benefit those leaving the
driveway beside it in a car as it would
improve visibility, however, it noted at a
previous meeting the concerns raised by
residents who use the shelter and
commented that holes in the sides would
make it unfit for

purpose as it would not provide

enough protection in inclement
weather. The Council, therefore,
agreed to consider the cost of
replacing both side panels,
acknowledging that over time, the
existing panels have become worn and
scratched and therefore harder to see
through. The cheapest quotation for
replacing the panels was 772 + VAT.
The Council felt that this was
prohibitive. In addition, Cllr Verber had
undertaken his own experiments to
determine the visibility issues the
shelter causes and felt that these were
negligible. It was agreed to contact
NCC Highways for information on the
splay required at each entrance to a
property and whether the bus shelter is
formally classed as a hindrance to
visibility at this point.
Bench at Cedar Way/Hawthorn
Road
The Council considered costs for
various different types of benches and
agreed to ask Nigel Drew to quote to
make a new bench using the same
mould as used previously to make the
Jubilee Bench and the bench on the
playing field at a cost (including fitting)
of no more than 500.
Next Parish Council Meeting
The next Parish Council Meetings will
be held at 7.30pm on 14th September
and 12th October at Gayton Jubilee
Hall.

GAYTON W.I
At the July meeting in the Jubilee Hall members were given an interesting talk by Ellen
Howe on the history and many uses for corn worldwide. Following the tradition of
making Corn Dollies she showed some of the intricate designs in her collection after
which members all had a go at successfully making their own.
The August meeting was once again held on a warm summer's evening at The Wicken,
when members enjoyed a pleasant walk around the walled gardens, planted with a fine
array of shrubs and flowers. It was then down to business when we were given details of
forthcoming events such as a Fun Workshop at Penny Watkins' house on 18th August
making an Edwardian hat/hair ornament/decoration for the 'Edwardian Evening' on 30th
September.
Centenary celebrations are plentiful over the next few weeks both nationally and locally
with the W.I. Centennial Fair being held on 3rd to 6th September at Harrogate International
Centre. Details were given of Sandringham W.I.'s Beach Party to be held at Old
Hunstanton on 16th September to which all Norfolk members are invited. Gayton is a
member of the Nar Valley Group and will be celebrating with a Centenary Tea Party on
23rd September at Swaffham Assembly Rooms.
After hearing about these celebrations and other items we were quite hungry and
certainly ready for a cup of tea! Fortunately the competition was for 'A Picnic for One in a
Basket' and what an array of delicious of food was laid out. Before we could do so
members placed small coins beside favourites and the winners were 1st Andrea
Lorriman, 2nd Margaret Neil and 3rd Hilda Bond. The money collected will be sent to
ACWW
Associated Country Women Worldwide an organisation to which W.I. is
affiliated.
ACWW began in 1927 and is a consultative association to the U.N. giving true
information on what the lives of rural women are really like. It concentrates on grass root
projects, helping women farmers and smallholders by encouraging local food
production together with careful and efficient use of water. International campaigns for
the retention of arable land for food production instead of so called 'development' are
also organised. It is sobering to realise that 70% of the world's work is done by women,
70% of adults living in poverty are women but only 10% of world property is owned by
women so it is appropriate that an organisation such as the W.I. supports ACWW.
Our next meeting will be held in the Jubilee Hall on 1st September at 7.30 pm when

Charles Fosgate
The family would like to say 'Thank You' to all who attended Charles' funeral on May
14th and donated to Tapping House who have received 1,100. Dione and Family

Good news!
The maintenance of our churchyard
is now under control. We have
found a new contractor, who will
strim the older part of the burial
ground and around the older
headstones and edges regularly
during the summer months.
The areas the builder has disturbed
still need to be tidied and re-seeded
in the Autumn and this is in hand.
Trevor and Lester continue to keep
the grass mown on a volunteer
basis. Thank you guys!
Thanks also to Tony Leigh who
stepped in to help when both Trevor

in the summer.

Thanks are due to local volunteers,

There is always much to do and the

together a maintenance plan to

are dealt with this will also need to
include repairs to the crumbling

The Beech Tree at Ivy House

During the heavy winds in June our beautiful beech
tree in the front garden lost a major limb. Although it
did cause some damage to the roof and ruined the
garden, we got away quite lightly. We were advised
by our tree surgeon to get a specialist report done on
the tree. This has revealed that it is diseased and
unstable. The tree is leaning towards the road and
the electricity cables. We have been given permission
for it to be felled. The tree is a landmark in the village
and it is with great sadness that it has to go.

The Late Clifford Benjamin

We are sad to announce the passing of Cliff Benjamin, who lived in Gayton for
many years and was well known and much respected. Our thoughts are with
Pearl and all the family at this sad time.

Gina's Page
An irregular page for fun things.
Is this the quickest jam recipe known to man? Here goes:

Blueberry Jam
You need: 1kg Blueberries, 750g Granulated sugar, 2 tbsps. Water
Wash and dry the blueberries. Add them with sugar and water, in a large saucepan
over a medium heat and cook for 20-25 mins. Stirring at first so sugar doesn't catch.
Pour into sterilised jars and seal. Voila! It does work.

Having our two grandsons to stay for their second week, they arrived with different
ailments, which fortunately were much diminished by the end of the week,
prompting Isaac, just turned 8 to say Oh Grandma, it seems like we have just come
to be mended and now it's time to go back. Job done. Fortunately, we get them
again, so hopefully we can do the fun things we missed out on this time.
One of my favourite poems: First and last verses.

The Solitary Reaper BY William Wordsworth

Behold her, single in the field,

Whate'er the theme, the Maiden sang

Yon solitary Highland Lass!

As if her song could have no ending;

Reaping and singing by herself;

I saw her singing at her work,

Stop here, or gently pass!

And o'er the sickle bending;

Alone she cuts and binds the grain,

I listened, motionless and still;

And sings a melancholy strain;

And, as I mounted up the hill,

O listen! for the Vale profound

The music in my heart I bore,

Is overflowing with the sound.

Long after it was heard no more.

And Finally....
I was driving this morning when I saw a parked RAC van. The driver was sobbing
uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself, that guys heading
for a breakdown.

EAST WINCH NEWS

East Winch Church News

The workmen have finished most of the tower and porch, though the west window
and door are still unfinished. The soakaway on the north side of the church was filled
in after the old bones excavated had been reburied, with prayers. Spare earth is
being distributed round the churchyard, which will therefore look muddy for a while.
Meanwhile, the electrician, Jason, arrived earlier than expected and has been
installing improved heating in the chancel and nave. To protect it while this goes on,
the organ has been shrouded in a great plastic hood.
Sadly, no children came to the holiday activities, and the forlorn helpers busied
themselves with cleaning and weeding instead. The audience for the poetry reading
was also low, but at least they all enjoyed themselves!
Churchyard Clean-up: please help!
On Saturday, 12th September, from 10am, join in a big clean up! There are graves
with saplings growing over them or hidden by ivy; far too much ragwort; the place
looks sad. Let's make it a party - there will be refreshments - and there's a lot of
satisfaction to be had in the work. Bring gloves and garden tools. We look forward to
seeing you!

We now have a lovely group of people from other parishes attending our monthly
services. If you haven't been recently and require a calm peaceful half hour do come.
Our lovely Church needs a table and chair to go just inside the nave door. Anne will
be able to place a pot plant on it to brighten the entrance. If anyone has anything
suitable lurking unused please let me know.
Forthcoming Services: Harvest Festival Wednesday 9th September 7pm. Choir,

running together in the woods. Sunday 18th October 3pm. Abbey Farm, East Walton.
Dog walk. Fruit cake. Barn or garden. Not just for dogs.
The hedge has been cut and path weed killed. Keith, Stephen and Norman have
been regularly strimming and mowing the church yard. Is anyone else doing even a
tiny bit. If so tremendous thank you's and let me know who you are because every
little bit helps. Bill. 07974 770067

QEH MATTERS
A new booking system for outpatient appointments is being introduced, starting with
general surgery. Patients will be asked to book any appointment due in 6 weeks or
less at the clinic reception after their consultation. Others will be contacted by the
Trust to arrange an appointment 6 weeks prior to a proposed date.
On your next visit to the hospital you may notice that doctors, excluding consultants,
are wearing white coats in most of the clinical areas. This is in response to patients'
comments, to make them more identifiable and look more professional. So far the
move has been well received by patients and staff.
To help those patients and visitors who are visually or hearing impaired, signs
around the hospital now include braille and embossed text plus hearing loops and
additional hearing assistance kits are being provided with the support of the League
of Friends.
The next Governors' Council meeting will be on 6th October in the conference room
at QEH. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please phone 01553 613142
if you wish to attend.

An Evening with Chris Knights

Chris Knights is well known to many as a Breckland farmer, conservationist, award
winning photographer, film maker and a member of NarVOS. This talk by Chris is as
yet untitled as was his talk to NarVOS last year, for which we had a record attendance.
Whatever topic Chris chooses this time, it is bound to be just as enthralling, entertaining
and informative with superb photography.
Visitors most welcome. Admission 2 on the night if you are not a NarVOS member. For
more information about this meeting or NarVOS call Ian Black on 01760 724092.

Car Link Volunteer Drivers needed in your area

Car Link is a partnership between ERS Medical and Voluntary Norfolk, providing non
emergency patient transport throughout the majority of the county. Our volunteer
drivers provide an essential service, transporting up to one hundred patients to their
destination each day. We are looking to recruit new volunteer drivers to join our busy
team, and would love to hear from caring, calm and reliable individuals with their own
car. As well drivers to journeys to hospitals in Norfolk and East Anglia, we are also
looking to find volunteers happy to go above and beyond the usual, by taking on
early morning appointments, and appointments in London. All expenses are
reimbursed, and training is provided. Please call Jules on 01603 883860 or email

jules.alderson@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk
We are particularly short of drivers in your area, so any support you may be able to
give, would be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about the service,
please do not hesitate to contact me, either by email, or by calling 01603 883860.
