Hello everyone
Ooh! How I love harvest time! The golden landscape, the smell of the harvest field
and orchard. The feeling of gathering whilst there is an abundance of crops and
produce, to store or preserve for the less productive months ahead. It certainly is a
busy time making jams, chutneys, the ubiquitous Ratatouille, (I had to look that
spelling up!), pies and crumbles for the freezer.
Or you can just take an amble to watch young swallows practising and massing for
their amazingly long flight. How do they do that, such little creatures, yet so clever?
If you're lucky and can escape urban night light, you may just catch a falling star
from a meteor shower. Enjoy.

The year moves swiftly on. September brings the hope of an Indian summer, a new
school term and it's time once more - can you believe it? - for a new series of Strictly
Come Dancing to step out onto our TV screens, brightening the way to that special
time in December when churches are especially busy.
As I write, it appears that Autumn, the season of mists and mellow fruitful-ness, is
already upon us. The harvest is in full swing and the fields are full of grain. How
wonderful it would be if all over the world the harvest was so plentiful. But sadly,
inequalities in climate, economics and distribution mean that while some countries
have a surfeit of food, many have insufficient to sustain life, suffering drought and
chronic famine and deprivation. Relief agencies and charities throughout the world
do their best to redress the balance and many of us give generously to assist this
work. Our God is a God of abundance and properly distributed, there should be
enough for all.
At this time of year when we feel a close affinity with the land, we in the churches
particularly look forward to welcoming people to our Harvest Festival services,
coming up over the next few weeks, with our schools taking a lead role. The harvest
gifts - the food items and local-grown produce we collect- is donated within our
communities, where it can do most good.
Food banks have long been highlighted in the news; according to local media there
is a surge in demand in our area of Norfolk (as in most of the UK) for their services.
The charity the Trussell Trust works in partnership with local churches and
community groups to set up food banks. Here in West Norfolk there is a food bank in
King's Lynn with satellite branches in Hunstanton and Downham Market; there are
also food banks in Dereham and Thetford. Many people, we are told, are having to
make the stark choice between paying their bills or putting food on the table - and
this must surely concern us all. No one is immune from falling on hard times, due to
redundancy perhaps or bereavement - or some other unforeseen crisis; it is good
that we have in place robust structures to support one another. Food banks are such
a safety net and they do valuable work in supporting people in crisis and signposting
them to agencies where other, longer-term help is available if needed.
So this Harvest time let us give thanks to our God of abundance for all the good
things in our lives; and may we all be blessed with generous hearts overflowing with
love for those in need, wherever we find them.
Reverend Judith Pollard.

Gayton Parish Council News
New Councillor
The Council co-opted Mr Peter Gidney to
the Council. Peter has a background in
planning and the Council is pleased to
welcome this expertise into the mix.
Skatepark
The Council was very pleased to note that
the installation of the new skatepark is
now completed. It was agreed to hold an
official opening ceremony at 6.00pm on
Monday 14th September. The Council
hopes that the Mayor will attend the event
and that local people who have been
using the ramps will be able to provide a
demonstration for those attending. The
Lynn News will also be invited and Mr
Anota of Whitehouse Services very kindly
offered to provide refreshments.
Streetlight Electricity Maintenance
The Council agreed to accept a new
contract for Streetlight Electricity

over three years on the proviso that they
will have no issue supplying the ballasts

Bus shelter on Lynn Road
The Council acknowledged that creating

improve visibility, however, it noted at a
previous meeting the concerns raised by
residents who use the shelter and
commented that holes in the sides would

At the July meeting in the Jubilee Hall members were given an interesting talk by Ellen
Howe on the history and many uses for corn worldwide. Following the tradition of
making Corn Dollies she showed some of the intricate designs in her collection after
which members all had a go at successfully making their own.
The August meeting was once again held on a warm summer's evening at The Wicken,
when members enjoyed a pleasant walk around the walled gardens, planted with a fine
array of shrubs and flowers. It was then down to business when we were given details of
forthcoming events such as a Fun Workshop at Penny Watkins' house on 18th August
making an Edwardian hat/hair ornament/decoration for the 'Edwardian Evening' on 30th
September.
Centenary celebrations are plentiful over the next few weeks both nationally and locally
with the W.I. Centennial Fair being held on 3rd to 6th September at Harrogate International
Centre. Details were given of Sandringham W.I.'s Beach Party to be held at Old
Hunstanton on 16th September to which all Norfolk members are invited. Gayton is a
member of the Nar Valley Group and will be celebrating with a Centenary Tea Party on
23rd September at Swaffham Assembly Rooms.
After hearing about these celebrations and other items we were quite hungry and
certainly ready for a cup of tea! Fortunately the competition was for 'A Picnic for One in a
Basket' and what an array of delicious of food was laid out. Before we could do so
members placed small coins beside favourites and the winners were 1st Andrea
Lorriman, 2nd Margaret Neil and 3rd Hilda Bond. The money collected will be sent to
ACWW
Associated Country Women Worldwide an organisation to which W.I. is
affiliated.
ACWW began in 1927 and is a consultative association to the U.N. giving true
information on what the lives of rural women are really like. It concentrates on grass root
projects, helping women farmers and smallholders by encouraging local food
production together with careful and efficient use of water. International campaigns for
the retention of arable land for food production instead of so called 'development' are
also organised. It is sobering to realise that 70% of the world's work is done by women,
70% of adults living in poverty are women but only 10% of world property is owned by
women so it is appropriate that an organisation such as the W.I. supports ACWW.
Our next meeting will be held in the Jubilee Hall on 1st September at 7.30 pm when
Charles Fosgate
The family would like to say 'Thank You' to all who attended Charles' funeral on May
14th and donated to Tapping House who have received 1,100. Dione and Family

Good news!
The maintenance of our churchyard
is now under control. We have
found a new contractor, who will
strim the older part of the burial
ground and around the older
headstones and edges regularly
during the summer months.
The areas the builder has disturbed
still need to be tidied and re-seeded
in the Autumn and this is in hand.
Trevor and Lester continue to keep
the grass mown on a volunteer
basis. Thank you guys!
Thanks also to Tony Leigh who
stepped in to help when both Trevor
and Lester were out of action earlier
in the summer.

Is this the quickest jam recipe known to man? Here goes:
Blueberry Jam
You need: 1kg Blueberries, 750g Granulated sugar, 2 tbsps. Water
Wash and dry the blueberries. Add them with sugar and water, in a large saucepan
over a medium heat and cook for 20-25 mins. Stirring at first so sugar doesn't catch.
Pour into sterilised jars and seal. Voila! It does work.
Having our two grandsons to stay for their second week, they arrived with different
ailments, which fortunately were much diminished by the end of the week,
prompting Isaac, just turned 8 to say Oh Grandma, it seems like we have just come
to be mended and now it's time to go back. Job done. Fortunately, we get them
again, so hopefully we can do the fun things we missed out on this time.
One of my favourite poems: First and last verses.
And Finally....
I was driving this morning when I saw a parked RAC van. The driver was sobbing
uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself, that guys heading
for a breakdown.

QEH MATTERS
A new booking system for outpatient appointments is being introduced, starting with
general surgery. Patients will be asked to book any appointment due in 6 weeks or
less at the clinic reception after their consultation. Others will be contacted by the
Trust to arrange an appointment 6 weeks prior to a proposed date.
On your next visit to the hospital you may notice that doctors, excluding consultants,
are wearing white coats in most of the clinical areas. This is in response to patients'
comments, to make them more identifiable and look more professional. So far the
move has been well received by patients and staff.
To help those patients and visitors who are visually or hearing impaired, signs
around the hospital now include braille and embossed text plus hearing loops and
additional hearing assistance kits are being provided with the support of the League
of Friends.
The next Governors' Council meeting will be on 6th October in the conference room
at QEH. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please phone 01553 613142
if you wish to attend.
