William Calley's conviction for his role in the My Lai massacre and believed his sentence of life imprisonment was too harsh. Over 75% in most surveys thought Calley was unfairly made a scapegoat and that others shared responsibility. Most also agreed that the soldiers at My Lai were following orders from higher-ups. While opinions of President Nixon's handling of the situation were mixed, the majority disagreed that he undermined military justice by sympathizing with Calley.
