2AC Blocks (Lecture)

On Case
Negative On Case Positions (Aff Responses in Bold)

Alt Cause (Assumes squo, solvency overwhelms. Proves a

brink.)
No Impact (Extend impact, explain why you prefer)
Squo Solves (Extend harms, explain why you prefer)
Impact Inevitable (Assumes squo, solvency overwhelms.)
No Internal Link (Extend internal links, explain why you prefer.
Extend specific warrants, and read a new card if necessary.)
No Solvency (Extend solvency, explain why you prefer. Read a
new card if they have a strong warrant.)
Impact Turn (Extend your impacts, explain why you prefer. Read
new cards. Read timeframe cards to short-circuit their longterm impacts.)
Link Turn, Plan Hurts X (Extend your link evidence, start link
comparison now. Answer the key question.)

Off Case

Disads
Offense: Link turn, impact turn, plan solves, case outweighs

A link turn requires a non-unique argument

An impact turn requires impact defense (economic collapse
doesnt cause war, and growth causes war)

Defense: Non unique, no link, no internal link, no impact, no brink,

no threshold.
A 2AC block will consist of a myriad of this in response to a disad. Never link
turn AND impact turn yourself. The negative can concede your arguments,
and youve effectively created a new disad against yourself.
Decide your responses to a disad based on your aff. Critical affs can critique
the thought behind the disadvantage; policy affs can outweigh it or link turn.
What if you hit a new disad?

Dont flow it.

o Sit and understand the evidence.
If youve been doing a lot of aff research, then you would have
predicted this disad. (If it is good)
o If you have not predicted it, it has a gaping flawlikely in the
internal links.
Link turn or read a takeout against the disad
o An impact turn is risky because it may conflict with your aff, or
the neg will tear it to shreds in the block

Counterplans
Offense: Solvency deficit, add ons, disads to the counterplan
Defense: Permutation, links to net benefit, theory (Condo, Pics Bad,
no topical CPs, no neg fiat, no international fiat)
In order to decide what the 2AC contains, read the CP text (look for flaws,
decide how to permute).

Ks
Functions differently but has a similar structure to a CP.
Offense: Alt fails, aff impacts outweigh, impact turn, plan is an
example of the alt, link turn
Defense: Link, perm the alt (plan + the alt, in all other instances,
tests residual links. Either the alt isnt strong enough to overcome
the perception of the plan and fails, or the plan isnt that big of
deal), impact inevitable
Framework: Utopian fiat, vague alts. (Attack the Ks response. If
they say ontology comes first read cards specifically saying that
ontology should not come first.)
How do you decide 2AC strategy?

Framework (Usually at the top)

Link Turn or Impact Turn (Depending on how your affirmative deals with
the links)
o Impact turning is much simpler
If youre going for the perm, pair it with inevitability
o The plan is still worth taking a risk on because
Dont forget there are case turns
o Absent the alt those case turns are non-unique
