SCENE #2
[EXT. CHURCH DAY]
(4 men get out of the church carrying a coffin.)
JIM (VOICE OVER)
He was 47 years old. A junior Vice-president of acquisitions at
Gracen&Gracen Incorporated, where I happen to work.
(Jack passes by the coffin, holding by the hand a woman dressed in black,
his wife, Elizabeth.)
JIM (VOICE OVER)
This is Waynes boss, Jack Walters, hes the president of
acquisitions, a smart decent man, as well respected by everyone in
Gracen&Gracen
(Jack hugs Waynes widow.)
JACK
I cant believe it was a heart attack. He had the biggest heart of
any men I knew.
(Gail get out of the church at the back, and passes by the funeral car.)
JIM (VOICE OVER)
Gail Koner. Jacks executive secretary. A loyal employee of 3 years
and very devoted to her boss.
(Jim approaches her.)
JIM
Gail ?
GAIL
Yes.
JIM
Jim Profit. Im starting Monday, new junior VP acquisitions.
(He takes his leather glove off his hand and shake hers.)
GAIL
All right. I saw the memo. How do you do.
JIM
Not exactly the best way to start a new job, is it ? Taking over
someone as regarded as Wayne.
GAIL
Yes he was a nice man.
JIM

www.jimprofitonline.com

Yes he was.
GAIL
Im sorry Im running a little late.
(She moves away, closer to the camera.)
JIM
I guess youre going to see your mother.
(She stops, looks back to him, stunned.)
JIM
Mondays, Wednesdays, and fridays, right ? Most weekends.
(He gets closer to her.)
JIM
MS is a terrible disease. But still, any kind of life is better than
the alternative.
GAIL
Im not sure I know what you mean.
JIM
You like to go Zandermans deli, get her some chicken noodle soup.
She really looks forward to that, doesnt she ?
GAIL
Look, I dont know what youre talking about.
(She tries to move away again.)
JIM
I didnt tell you I what department I used to work, did I.
(She stops.)
JIM

find that sometimes a few dont balance out.

JIM
I had to ran a lot of programs to find your XXXX. You ran every third
seventh and nineth a direct reinvestment from dividens down to the

nearest hundredth of a penny and skim the balance. A few hundred

dollars a month to get your mother a better room is hardly a crime.
Three, seven, nine, that was the key. Theyre your lucky numbers ?
GAIL
Use to be.
JIM
Fortunately, Gail Im the only one who knows any about this. So I can
go back to auditing and make the whole thing disappear. But Im gonna
have to ask you for one small favor.
GAIL
What ?..
(He joins hands, looking loke hes pleading.)
JIM
I could really use 20 uninterrupted minutes on your boss computer.

(Jack Walters throws the paper across the table to Mary Miller.)
JIM (VOICE OVER)
I doubt he suspects Mary Miller. Shes a senior VP whos working 60
hours a week. Of course she was opposed to the baby food takeover.
(Mary throws the paper to Pete.)
JIM (VOICE OVER)
Pete Gracen, the other senior VP and Chaz younger brother. Of course

JACK
This is Jim Profit, Chaz, new junior vp, taking over for Wayne.
CHAZ
First day ?

www.jimprofitonline.com

JIM
Yes sir.
CHAZ
Well Jim, you know what that makes you ? The only person in this room
that I can trust.
PETE
Thats a pretty sad commentary. But Ill tell you something even
sadder. Every one of us is going to have to take a lie detector test.
JACK
Not my division.
PETE
Why not ? One of us leaked the story..
JIM
Excuse me. I know its not my place, but how do we know it was senior
staff...or even someone in this division. Anyone couldve done. I
couldve done it. I couldve...I dont know, find something about Mr
Walters secretary, blackmailed her, forced her to get me into the AP
files.
MARY
Hes right. Anybody could have done it. We have 38000 employees
worldwide. You want to give everyone of them a lie detector test ?
JIM
Gracen & Gracen is more than just a company. Not to me at least, its
a family. And if we start with lie detector test, whats it going to
be next week, loyalty oaths ? I wont take a lie detector test. I
think its wrong. If that means I shouldnt be a part of this
division..
(Chaz gets up.)
CHAZ
Profits right. You either trust the people who work for you, or you
dont.
(A wall of the conference room moves, and he enters his office with Jack.)
CHAZ (TO JACK)
I want every executive of your department thoroughly investigated.
CHAZ (TO HIS SECRETARY)
Find me Meltzer, get her into my office now.

They all get up. He bends over to salute them. They respond. )

JIM
MMh no.
JOANNE
What ?
JIM
Whoever did it had a conscience..
JOANNE
How so ?
JIM
He couldnt stand the idea of selling sugared water to babies. He
might have done the wrong thing but he had the right motive.
JOANNE
I think its simpler than that.
(They stop.)
JIM
Really ?
JOANNE
Yeah. Someone with a lot of stock, greedy, sold short, leaked the
story, made a fast buck.

BOBBY
Theyre gonna find what you did in that autopsy.

JIM
You should cause if you dont I will be forced to givem this.

CHAZ
Jim , how are you ?

JIM
You know I was talking at some of the boys in legal, say if we can

(Chaz laughs.)
CHAZ
Well I dont think theyre gonna be any lawsuits, unfortunately.
(He pours two glasses of whiskey.)

Anyways,

Vice- president ?

www.jimprofitonline.com

CHAZ
I know its a big move up, and you havent been with us long, but
youll do great.
(Chaz sits.)
CHAZ
Jack has to approve it of course, but thats just a formality.
(Jack comes from the back.)
JIM
Jack ?
CHAZ
I was looking for a way to put his whole babyfoodness behind us and
Jack has come up with a terrific solution. It seems he goes way back
with the president of a company walled healthy home. Now, healthy
home has a great image, but no capital.
CHAZ + JIM (VOICE OVER)
And babys finest has a lot of capital, but a few image problems to
say the least.
JIM (VOICE OVER)
However, fold babys finest into healthy home and you own a small
fortune for &G, whoch is always cause for celebration.

Everybodys kinda curious, why you came back. We heard you had a
number of other good offers.
JACK
Well Jim therere people here I care about. Problems I want to see
taken care of.
JIM
What kind of problems ?
JACK
Well, let me put it this way, Jim. You know what the greatest danger
to a company like this is ? Its not a hostile takeover, or the
economy going sour. Its when you see something you know is wrong.
And you look the other way.
(Jack heads to his desk.)
JIM
Youre talking about babys finest.
JACK
Yeah, among other things.
JIM
Huhu..
JACK
Remember Wayne gresham ? Died of a heart attack, you took his job.
JIM
I never met him.
JACK (VOICE OVER)
You sure ?
JIM
Positive.
JACK
Caus it stroke me kind of funny. I was in a nursing home the other
day and a fellow named Stokowski died of a heart attack. Youve ever met
him ?

JOANNE
No, I just find it hard to look at you sometimes.
JIM
Why, I remind you of someone ? Your sister ? You know I hear shes
doing really well at the institution. Theyre gonna let her out soon.
You must have mixed feelings about that after what she did to you.
Joanne, one thing we have to remember : to forgive. You cant run
from your past. And you cant run from yourself.
JOANNE
You cant run from me, son of a bitch.
(Jim smiles, pulls away to let her in her car.)
