In Elizabeths reign, the English began to compete with the
Spanish and Portuguese in exploring the world and founding
colonies. One colony, Ireland was very near England, but
English sailors also made voyages to North, Central and South
America founding more colonies there. Sir Francis Drake and
his cousins John and William Hawkins went on trading
voyages. They left England with clothing and other goods to
sell on the west coast Africa. There they filled their ships with
men and women to sell as slaves in the Caribbean, where
Spanish settlers needed people to work in their sugar and
