Eric Weiner’s new book, The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the
World, is delightful. He takes the reader on a world tour in search of real happiness. It’s difficult to
say exactly what kind of book it is. It mixes humor with a semi-scientific investigation, and
travelogues with popular psychological analysis. Among the countries visited we find the super-
controlled Switzerland; the immensely wealthy Qatar; Bhutan, a poor country where the King has
set his sights on calculating Gross National Happiness instead of the Gross National Product; and
Iceland, where lengthy winter nights have led the people to poetry and drink.

Not every inhabitant of the countries he examines will be in agreement with his analysis, and it is
true that he limits it to interviews with a few “typical” or “knowledgeable” people in each place.
However, those who have visited the countries under analysis will find themselves nodding in
agreement with his experiences. Although Weiner never finds complete happiness, he does
discover that happiness has many manifestations and he offers the reader many fascinating
suggestions for travel.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. He
was a Baptist minister who joined the civil rights movement early in his career. He was dedicated to
achieving African-American rights in a country where African-Americans were considered by many
to be second-class citizens. In 1957 he led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, opposing the city's policy
of racial segregation on its public transit system, and two years later he helped found the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference, which was dedicated to using the nonviolent methods of
Mahatma Gandhi to reach its goals. In 1963 he led the March on Washington, in which hundreds of
thousands of civil rights activists met in the nation’s capital. At this event King gave his most
famous speech, “I Have a Dream,” in which he envisioned a society free from discrimination. He
was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964; the youngest person to ever receive it. He was
assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968 and posthumously awarded the Presidential
Medal of Freedom in 1977 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. A U.S. federal holiday was
established in 1986 to commemorate his birth.
