Text A

Mountain Escape
The nurse carefully lifted the young man’s head. He had probably fallen in the snow earlier that morning. She saw
dark, red blood on his head and looked inside the medical bag which she had brought. While she was cleaning the
wound, the man slowly opened his eyes. His body filled with a warm feeling; so warm that he forgot the ice that
was melting around him. He wanted to thank her but he was too weak to speak. Suddenly, the nurse stood up
and looked around. She had heard a noise. Maybe it was an animal. She knew that she had to move the man or
that his life would be in danger. She pulled his heavy body through the snow towards a large tree where they
could hide. She was very cold and she didn’t have the strength to move him quickly. She heard the animal again.
It was getting closer. Then she saw her black bag by the river. She had forgotten it! Should she go back for it
now or stay with the man?

Important People In History – Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale is one of the most famous women in the history of
medicine. Her work brought about important changes in the way nurses
worked in hospitals.

Hospitals in the past

In the 1800s, hospitals were dirty and the beds were close together.
Illnesses spread very quickly and many patients used to die. The nurses
who worked there often didn’t have any training or medical education.
Florence Nightingale changed all this.

Background and education

Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, in 1820, but she spent her childhood in England. She studied history,
math, and Italian and was very academic. In those days, women usually got married after school, but Florence
wanted more from life. In the early 1850s she went to Germany where she learned basic nursing skills, and then
a friend asked her to return to London to work in a hospital there.

War

The Crimean War started in 1853 and Britain sent soldiers to fight the Russians. Nightingale wanted to go to help
the injured. In 1854, she went to work at the hospital in Scutari in Turkey with 38 nurses. She asked for 80 more
nurses to help her. They cleaned the wards regularly and washed the patients and their bedding. These changes
saved many lives.

Turning point in medicine

In 1856, she returned to Britain. She started the first training school for nurses and in 1859 she published the
book Notes on Nursing. She completely changed the job of nursing in hospitals and, as a result of her work,
fewer patients in hospitals died.
