Each Fall, Beta Gamma Sigma asks its members to
set aside a day to offer gifts of time and talent to their
communities around the globe. BGS members have
read to intercity students, built wheelchair ramps,
cleaned beaches, volunteered at food banks, planted
trees and everything in between. The Society hopes
that even more members and chapters will give back
their talent and time in the future.

The History of Your Honor Society

The Societys Founding:

In the spring of 1907, a group of commerce students at the University
of Wisconsin received permission from the faculty to organize a
commerce honor society, which they called Beta Gamma Sigma. At
about the same time, students at the University of Illinois and the
University of California felt the need for such an organization on
their campuses and respectively organized Delta Kappa Chi (1910)
and The Economics Club (1906).
The successful meeting to organize one national scholarship honor
society in business and commerce was held on February 19,
1913, which is recognized as the founding date of what is now
the International Honor Society Beta Gamma Sigma.

The Name:
BGS was named in honor of D. Earle
Burchell, Stephen W. Gilman and William
A. Scott, professors at the University of
Wisconsins School of Commerce at the
time of the Societys founding. Charter
members voted to have a name consisting
of Greek words having as their first letters
the initials of the three professors. There
was no meaning given to the letters until
the founding of the national organization in 1913,
when the Greek words Bebaeos (which signifies
honor), Gnosis (meaning wisdom) and Spoude
(meaning earnestness) were assigned
to the initials.

female members
1989: The first BGS chapter outside the U.S.
is installed at the University of Calgary
2000: BGS installs its first collegiate chapter
outside North America at The Chinese
University of Hong Kong
2000: Quiester Craig, then dean at North
Carolina A&T State University, becomes the
first African American president of BGS.
2001: BGS holds its first Student
Leadership Forum in Clearwater Beach, Fla.
2003: BGS inducts its 500,000th member
2004: Sara M. Freedman, then dean at
Mississippi State University, becomes the first female president of BGS
2013: BGS celebrates a Century of Excellence
