Ian Bowker
Scope Manager, Training and Development
ALS Coal Division’s first and second line supervisors needed to develop their management skills so
that they could step up to higher positions in the growing business. Our locations throughout New
South Wales and Queensland meant it was difficult to find a training provider that could accommodate
our national training needs. We required not only a flexible and economical provider, but one that could
offer facilitators with expert knowledge of our industry.

The Program
Chifley Business School developed and customised the Certificate IV in Business (Frontline
Management) program for our frontline managers.

Outcome
Since using Chifley, employee uptake of the course has grown and supervisors who have completed
the course have all been promoted to senior positions.

ALS Coal Division is nominated for Employee of the Year at the Queensland Government Training

Gavin Veach
Scope Group Manager, Learning and Development
To achieve our corporate goals, the business needed a program to develop and recognise the existing
skills of our frontline talent. We needed a customised program that would align with our corporate
Leadership Development framework and national competency standards. Most importantly, we
required a provider who could offer flexible delivery options to suit the schedules of frontline managers
across many regional and remote locations.

The Program
The Management Foundations Program was developed five years ago in conjunction with Chifley
Business School to address these needs. The program enables the attainment of a range of nationally
recognised awards—Certificate III in Frontline Management, Certificate IV in Frontline Management
and the Diploma of Management.

The Outcome
The program was completely redesigned in 2008 to ensure ongoing relevance to business directives.
To date, six cohorts of over 70 participants per cohort have, or are, currently completing the program.
The articulation pathway has proven to be effective in giving our frontline leaders the skills and
confidence they need to lead and manage their teams and their projects.

Chifley’s facilitators and expert staff have always been professional in their approach from developing
the program to managing the interactions with participants of the program.

GRADUATE STORIES

BRENDAN GUINEY
Manager, Planning and Development | MidCoast Water
MBA (Technology Management) 2006–2008

I had been planning for a few years to add to my civil engineering degree with a management
qualification, but it took some time to find an ‘engineered’ MBA that suited my chosen
career path in the water industry. By 2004 I had narrowed the field, and enrolled in the MBA
(Technology Management) in 2006.
The water industry is undergoing significant change. In order to meet these challenges much
work has been going on in strategic review, as well as business systems implementation and
improvement to achieve better business efficiency and effectiveness. More often than not, a
mix of business systems competence and engineering competence is required to achieve the
necessary improvements.
I found the flexibility of the program appealing. The comprehensive course notes backed up
with copious references for further reading meant that although I was in a bit of a rush to get
the MBA completed, I knew I can track through my notes and references if an issue arises
later on that requires more detailed attention. I particularly liked the assignments that were
generic to permit me to study my own organisation—MidCoast Water. This allowed me to
contribute something back to my employer in return for their generous sponsorship of my
study expenses.
As the current generation of executive managers retire, the MBA (Technology Management)
will stand anyone in good stead to pursue positions in engineering organisations with higher
responsibility, by complementing their core engineering competence with essential business
management skills and resources.

MBA (Technology Management) 2001–2006

David Fisher and Quintin Davenport, both graduates of the MBA (Technology Management) program,
share a passion for inventing products. Fuelled by their enthusiasm and backed by the knowledge
they gained from the MBA program, David and Quintin now have a trademark product—The
Hydromiser™1.

The rigour of the MBA program and the support from the unit chairs assisted us in our
business venture,’ says David. ‘It was not until we submitted a joint business plan for Unit
304—Business Planning and Innovation, and received positive feedback from John Legge that
we were reassured of our direction.

In the middle of my MBA studies I remarried and Quintin was my best man. Not only were we
close friends, but were also colleagues, business partners and study mates. Distance learning
has enabled me to study, work full time and maintain important personal relationships outside
of work.

For me, the MBA is as much a degree in perseverance, as it is in learning new methods of
doing business.

house in which it is installed.
